You know, James... I was always better.
~ Trevelyan taunting James Bond

Alec Trevelyan is the main antagonist of the 1995 action spy film, Goldeneye. Formerly known as 006, Trevelyan had been secretly plotting revenge against the British government due to their betrayal of his family. In order to do so, he obtains the satellite weapon known as the Goldeneye. He was portrayed by Sean Bean.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He has a genuine tragedy that explains why he turned evil to begin with, as the son of the Lienz Cossacks (a family that betrayed Russia to the Nazis during World War 2), Alec's parents were stricken with survivor's guilt after surviving Stalin's firing squads. This lead to his parents dying in a murder suicide, leading Alec reasonably angry with the British government for putting his family through such a thing.
  • Played MI6 and the British government for decades while simultaneously plotting revenge for the government's betrayal of his family.
  • Faked his death while on a mission with Bond.
  • After fooling MI6 and James Bond both into thinking he was dead, he started the Janus Crime Syndicate and became a prominent crime lord.
  • Had his henchmen Xenia Onatopp and General Ourumov steal the Goldeneye satellite with the help of computer hacker Boris Grishenko.
  • Outsmarted James Bond at several points during the film.
  • Came closer to killing James Bond than many other villains, with Bond only escaping at the very last second from his death traps.
  • His plot was to hack the Bank of England and transfer all the funds to his own private bank account before destroying all computers in London with the Goldeneye's EMP blast to cover his tracks.
  • Despite being faux affably evil, he still acts like a gentlemen with the facade rarely if ever slipping.
  • Even when Bond had him beat, he didn't beg for mercy and only taunted him by asking his former best friend "For England James?".
  • He's not nearly as sadistic or violent as his right hand, Xenia Onatopp, who derives sexual satisfaction from murdering people and kills her victims by crushing their ribs with her hips.
  • Even though he has a slip up by letting Boris play with Bond's explosive pen, Alec had likely defected from MI6 before Q could invent such a thing, meaning he had no way of knowing the pen was an explosive.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • His plot would have destroyed the world economy and brought western civilization to the brink of collapse.
  • He's the boss of a powerful crime syndicate, making him responsible for a lot of illegal activities.
  • He's willing to work with Xenia Onatopp, a Pure Evil villain.
  • He force kisses Natalya at one point, however, after she rejects his advances and slaps him across the face, he accepts her rejection and doesn't try anything like that again.
