“ | The era of bending is over! A new era of equality has begun! | „ |
~ Amon's most famous quote |
“ | Our showdown, while inevitable, is premature. Although it would be the simplest thing for me to take away your bending right now, I won't. You'd only become a martyr. Benders of every nation would rally behind your untimely demise, but I assure you, I have a plan. And I'm saving you for last, then you'll get your duel, and I will destroy you. | „ |
~ Amon confronting Korra |
“ | Tarrlok: What...? What are you? Amon: I am the solution. |

~ Amon confronting Tarrlok |
Noatak, better known as Amon, is a major antagonist in Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Legend of Korra, serving as the main antagonist of Book I: Air and a posthumous antagonist for the rest of the series.
He's the older son of the infamous bloodbender criminal Yakone, who inherited his father's bending skills (along with his younger brother Tarrlock), but was subjected to harsh training by him to become his tool of revenge. However, Noatak ran from home and later mastered his bloodbending abilities into permanently debending people, intending to to debending every bender in the world to provide equality to all.
He was voiced by Steve Blum, who also voiced Green Goblin in The Spectacular Spider-Man.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Is given a charismatic and creepily imposing performance by Steve Blum.
- He has one of the most sympathetic backstories in the series: he was originally a sweet boy who with his brother got subjected to harsh training and abuse by their father, making him cold and detached due to having to burden Yakone's expectations as his favorite before snapping and running away from home.
- He's a genuine anti-villainous extremist, who, despite being a bender himself, wanted nothing but to provide equality to all people by getting rid of bending, and it's hard to call him out for it, given the Republic City has many criminal benders (including his own father), who would use their powers to threaten innocents (mostly the non-benders). So unlike the racist Fire Nation members, he hated bending only as concept.
- He not only managed to master his father's unique ability to bloodbend without a full moon and with the sheer power of mind, but perfected it into using it to permanently block all chakras in bender, thus debending them. He at the same time limited himself to using only bloodbending in that manner to not raise any suspicions.
- After running away from home and faking his own death, he assumed a new identity, Amon, and fabricated a fake backstory, of being a normal child, whose family got murdered and he got deformed by firebender, before being given power to permanently strip people of bending by spirits, successfully rallying up the support of Equalist movement. He even created fake burn scars on his face to further cover his lies.
- Amon's most dangerous weapon is his own words, which is why he succeeded as far as he did: he made many charismatically rousing speeches that rallied up support from thousands of non-benders to joint his revolution.
- He's a figurative chessmaster, who carefully chose his victims, starting with dangerous crime lords and then the winners of the pro-bending tournament, the Wolfbats, that cheated to win, to prove his point on the negatives of bending and earning the support.
- Rallies up the wealthy Hiroshi Sato to his cause to fund his operations and gain his equipment upon learning about his wife's death under a firebender's hand, amassing enough technology to place his followers at equal footing with benders.
- He is one of a handful of characters to be able to resist the bloodbending grip, with it only slowing him down.
- By placing his minions at well-strategized positions, Amon leads a successful invasion and conquers Republic City with ease.
- When challenged to a public duel by Korra, Amon merely postponed it, saying that debending Korra at that time would make her a martyr, that would unify benders and non-benders against him. Amon then promptly succeeded in eradicating her bending when the right time came.
- Despite being defeated, this ultimately happened through sheer dumb luck when Korra unexpectedly unlocked the airbending after being debended, which she used to throw Amon into ravin, with him accidentally exposing himself because he was facing mortal danger, before quickly regaining his composure, accepting the foil of his plan.
- When defeated, he apologized to his brother Tarrlock for debending him, before freeing him and going with him to start up life anew. It's also implied he was aware that Tarrlock planned to kill them both to ensure that Yakone's legacy would come to an end, but didn't care at all.
- Even after his death, Amon's action left some positive impact, as in the aftermath of the anti-bending movement, the United Republic Council got replaced with democratically-elected President, thus giving both benders and non-benders true political equality.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He planned a cultural genocide by using his bloodbending to debend all benders, despite knowing how intrinsic it is to a bender's nature, given Tahno becoming a complete wreck and Korra's presumed thoughts of suicide, after they got debended. He debended hundreds of people overall, including his own brother.
- Launched a destructive takeover of Republic City, leading to entire streets being bombed and lots of collateral damage occurring, much to his utter apathy.
- Captured Tenzin and his family, before and attempting to debend him and three of his children to eradicate airbending forever, showcasing his willingness to harm children.
- Bloodbends his own Lieutenant without remorse when he finds about his secret as a bloodbender.
