Azazel is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside the Darkness) of the CW television series Supernatural. He was a Prince of Hell and among the oldest demons in existence, created by Lucifer himself and eternally devoted to him, being the mastermind behind the plan to free him from Hell. Although he was killed by Dean Winchester, he was ultimately successful postmortem as Lucifer was freed and Sam Winchester became his vessel.
As a result of Azazel's actions (influenced by Lucifer, making him the overarching villain as Azazel's commander), the Winchester family's life took a turn for the worst, setting up all the dominos for Sam's life by sending him, his brother, and their father John on a pursuit for him to avenge their mother, with Azazel still haunting Dean especially in the years to come.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Azazel was able to close deals with people either through possessing and imitating confidants of the person he was dealing with and making promises to them (not always while impersonating someone), in exchange for being able to enter their houses in ten years.
- Possessing an unnamed man, he made a deal with a young man to stop the abuse in his household resultant from his father.
- He possessed Dr. Brown, the doctor treating a young woman's husband's metastasized cancer and attempted to make a deal with her to cure him before he was interrupted by the Campbells and Dean Winchester.
- He possesses Samuel Campbell and kills his daughter Mary's boyfriend, John Winchester, thereafter making a deal with her to resurrect him, emotionally manipulating her into accepting.
- He could almost flawlessly imitate the person he was possessing, using this to his advantage while possessing Samuel, learning about Sam's status as one of his "special children" from Dean, who is none the wiser. He was able to imitate John until Dean recognizes something is wrong, at which point Azazel revealed himself.
- Despite how violent and sadistic he was, he only killed when it was important to his plans, with the exception being Dean, whom he sought to torture to death to avenge the deaths of his demon "children", Meg and Tom.
- All throughout Sam's life, Azazel manipulated him by strategically delegating his demons to feign friendship with Sam, even having one introduce him to his girlfriend Jessica before having her killed to bring Sam back into monster hunting.
- He always managed to escape being killed by the Colt, the only weapon that could kill him. He would either fly away in his smoke form or teleport if he was about to be shot, take the gun himself, or would talk the potential shooter down from pulling the trigger.
- While possessing John and confronting the brothers for the first time, he was angry with Dean but never broke down in a rage and remained calm as he tortured Dean by crushing his insides.
- He manipulates Jake Talley, the last of his surviving special children, into opening the Devil's Doorway and freeing Lilith, promising him and his family "money and honey, health and wealth" and even that they'll be royalty if Jake does what he's told, a promise that successfully talks Jake out of shooting Azazel dead with the Colt.
- During his final confrontation with Dean, he steals the gun straight from his hands before attempting to kill him once and for all for outliving his usefulness and to avenge Meg and Tom.
- Though he dies before the beginning of the Apocalypse, Azazel's plans ultimately come to fruition posthumously, having freed Lilith who, in turn, died to free Lucifer who began the Apocalypse (although Michael and Lucifer were stopped from fighting) and eventually possessed Sam.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Azazel was described by one demon as a tyrant. Being the king of Hell and all demons, Azazel was able to instill fear in them, presumably either through his power alone or through threats of torment or death.
- In order to speak to Lucifer and learn how to free him, Azazel possesses a priest of St. Mary's Convent and violently stabs the nuns in the convent to death.
- Through the deals he makes, he feeds the infant children of those he dealt with his blood, imbuing them with psychic powers to make them strong enough to destroy Lilith—the last of the 66 seals on Lucifer's Cage—and be a vessel for Lucifer.
- He created several generations of these "special children", making an attempt in 2005 that was averted by Sam and Dean Winchester.
- He kills Samuel and Deanna Campbell in front of Dean and John in front of Mary, mocking her over the death of everyone she loves before dealing with her to bring John back to life.
- If ever he was interrupted during his blood-feeding ritual, he would pin the person who walked into the ceiling of the nursery, slash their abdomens, and burn them.
- Four victims are confirmed, all of which are the mothers of the children. One of these mothers was Mary Winchester, which set her husband John on a path to avenge her and kill Azazel.
- Possessing John, Azazel subdues the brothers and berates Dean in particular for dispatching Meg and Tom. When Dean strikes a nerve by mocking their deaths, Azazel begins crushing his organs, slowly and agonizingly killing Dean, barely stopping from ending his life when John briefly takes back control.
- John makes a deal with Azazel to give the latter the Colt in exchange for saving Dean's life, but Azazel only agrees if John also sells his soul, which he does and is killed by the Prince and sent to Hell to be tortured so the demons can break the first of the 66 seals.
- Azazel kidnaps his special children and places them in an abandoned town where he has them eliminate one another, seeking the strongest of the bunch to free Lilith, eventually kill her, and contain Lucifer.
- When Jake Talley winds up the sole survivor of Azazel's "beauty pageant" and expresses unwillingness to follow Azazel's orders, the demon threatens to kill his mom and sister and feed them their own entrails. He later further manipulates Jake by promising him and his family royal status.
- After Jake opens the Devil's Doorway, freeing Lilith and hundreds of other demons and Hell souls, Azazel steals the Colt from Dean and throws him across the cemetery, injuring him before attempting to shoot him dead with the Colt.
