~ Bolo's last words to the Team Squad before being killed by the Lord Commander, which he faces with dignity. |
Bolo is the overarching protagonist of the animated series Final Space. He was the only Titan not corrupted by Invictus and would later help the Team Squad in trying to defeat it and the rest of the Titans.
He was voiced by Keith David.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He's voiced by Keith David, who gives Bolo a charismatic performance. With his voice work, Bolo speaks in a tone of voice that is both commanding and authoritative but also casual and easygoing, helping to make him a popular character. In-universe he's regarded as a "cool dude" (mainly by Little Cato and the Arachnitects).
- No matter what situation he's in, he rarely loses his composure or acts recklessly, remaining pragmatic and strategic even in direct combat.
- He was the only Titan who resisted Invictus's corruption, maintaining his sense of self through sheer willpower alone. He made a plan to stop Invictus and his corrupted brethren from destroying the dimensions they had created, having the Arachnitects restrain and trap them In Final Space before personally closing the dimenionsal wall and sealing Final Space off from the rest of the multiverse.
- Before being imprisoned in a seemingly impenetrable cube in Inner Space, he masterminded the creation of 5 dimensional keys that could one day be used to release him from his prison and had them hidden across the universe.
- When Nightfall was preparing to commit suicide to reunite with her Gary, he appeared to her in a vision and offered to help her change the course of history. He would teach her how to build a time machine that would enable her to travel to alternate universes until she found one where Gary could be saved.
- When Gary's anxiety literally began consuming him in Bolo's mind, he gently gets Gary to admit his fears and insecurities. This helps save Gary from consumption, with Bolo telling him afterward that all progress begins with the truth.
- He sends Gary back in time to the moment his father John was killed. This allows him to not only help his father build the antimatter bomb that would close the breach into Final Space in John's time, but also learn the location of the bomb in New York that would close the present-day breach created by the Lord Commander. This would enable the Team Squad to close the breach before the Titans could escape and destroy the universe, albeit at the cost of Earth being dragged into Final Space and destroyed.
- He contacts Gary through the Nymerian Cube (one of the dimensional keys) and informs him of Quinn's survival in Final Space and promises to help him save her if he frees the Titan from his prison. He then tasks the Team Squad with finding the remaining dimensional keys to aid in his release. He also avoids telling them about needing to sacrifice one of the team members (sans KVN who is a robot) to create the sixth key needed for the ritual to release him until after they bring him the original 5 to ensure they would follow through with their end of the deal.
- He warns Gary about the Arachnitects when they kidnap Mooncake, who he needs for his release from Inner Space and for his fight against Invictus. He tells them that they need to activate one of the 2 dimensional keys to reach their dimension and save Mooncake.
- When the Team Squad are informed by Sheryl, who worked for his archenemy Oreskis, of Bolo supposedly being evil, he is able to convince them that this was a lie, while also going on a comedic rant about how much of a "dickbag" Oreskis is.
- When Gary reconsiders releasing Bolo upon learning about a sacrifice being needed to free him, he reminds him of Quinn's life being on the line. This convinces Nightfall to perform the sacrifice, leading to Bolo being freed after eons of imprisonment. He reassures Gary that Nightfall wouldn't die in vain.
- He escapes the collapsing Inner Space and manages to help the Crimson Light escape by literally throwing them through the exit before escaping himself. he then summons the Arachnitects to open the gateway to Final Space so he can challenge Invictus personally, remaining undeterred even as they tell him that he would have to face an army of Titans first, boldly declaring that he would kill them all.
- He punches and fends off one of Invictus's Titans to save the Crimson Light. He keeps pace with his allies before launching them onto a deserted planet to save them from a pursuing Invictus, who he escapes from on his own offscreen.
- He saves the Team Squad from the Lizard Titan and manages to him off one-on-one. While he eventually was shown to still be weak from his time imprisoned, he teams up with Mooncake and manages to defeat the Titan by shoving his face into a star.
- He convinces Mooncake to join him in defeating Oreskis after the Team Squad was seemingly killed in the planet's destruction, using his powers to transform a black hole into a sword called the Titanslayer.
- Teaming up with Mooncake he's able to duel Oreskis in an epic solar system spanning battle. Even though Oreskis manages to stab him (which makes him vulnerable to Invictus's corruption), he still manages to endure the onslaught and overpowers Oreskis before having Mooncake decapitate him. Despite hating him, Bolo still expresses some remorse for Oreskis and acknowledges him as his old friend.
- He acknowledges Gary's anger at him for lying to Mooncake about Gary being dead just so he could get revenge on Oreskis, admitting that his vengeance blinded him. He assures Gary that they are still on the same side.
- Despite knowing of Invictus's poison corrupting him, he still resolves to use what little time he has left to destroy as much of Invictus's army as possible.
- As Invictus's poison consumes him, he manages to preserve a spark of his sanity long enough for the Gatekeeper to find the Teamsquad inside his mind and gives the Gatekeeper access to the Chamber of Doubt. While he is unable to stop Invictus from killing Fox and framing Gary in front of Ash, he's still able to restore his sanity.
- He attempts to comfort Ash over Fox's death while defending Gary's innocence, sadly to no avail. At her request, he returns Fox's body to her.
- He carries Gary and Quinn to Wisconsin to activate the KVN net to destroy the Titans. He's able to single handedly protect them from the zombie Gary's long enough for them to get the relay online. Once the weapon is activated, he carries Gary and Quinn back to their ship. Although his efforts would be undermined by the Lord Commander transforming into a Titan after merging with the incubating Earth Titan and destroying the KVN's, along with what remained of the Earth, this doesn't count against him as he was unaware of the Titan incubating in the Earth's core and couldn't have seen it coming.
- He defiantly tells the Lord Commander that he wasn't a real Titan and remains unafraid and unwavering against him. He then puts himself between the Lord Commander and the Team Squad to give his allies time to escape.
- Even though the Lord Commander manages to impale and fatally wound him easily, he does not lose his cool and remains dignified in the face of his own death. His last action is to tell his friends "Peace out" before having his head ripped off.
- Even though his attempts to thwart Invictus ultimately failed, his actions still helped the Team Squad go far in their efforts to stop it and his plans managed to hinder the demons attempts to escape Final Space and consume life in every dimension for eons.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He's an extremist who is willing to manipulate and deceive his allies when it suits him. He uses Gary's desire to save Quinn to convince him to free him with the dimensional keys, while hiding the fact that he needed to sacrifice one of his friends to create a sixth key to fully free him until after they had already collected the original five, effectively trapping them and leaving them no choice but to go through with it, leading to Nightfall sacrificing herself to Mooncake. He also tricked Mooncake into believing Gary had been killed during the struggle with the Lizard Titan to convince him to help him fight Oreskis, effectively leaving his allies for dead without even bothering to look for them and see if they were really dead. Gary is understandably angry at him during both cases when he realizes his deception, with Bolo himself acknowledging how underhanded his methods are.
- Despite reaffirming his alliance with Gary, he still makes a point of pointing his sword at him threateningly while warning Gary against "crossing him".
- He's shown to be extremely vengeful towards his fellow Titans for imprisoning him. He's especially bitter towards Oreskis for stealing his girlfriend Jill from him, having resented him for this in particular even during his imprisonment. In fact, his tricking Mooncake into unwittingly leaving Gary was to settle his grudge with Oreskis, admitting that he mainly wanted to get back at him for stealing Jill. This also shows that he can hold petty grudges despite his well-intentioned goals.
- Like Gary, he has a disproportionate hatred of KVN for his annoying personality. He even went out of his way to electrocute KVN during a conversation with Gary purely out of annoyance towards the robot. He even admitted with a small note of humor in his voice that he considered sacrificing KVN to make the sixth key and only refrained from doing so due to KVN's existence as a robot meaning he doesn't qualify as life.
