Boyd Schuller is the overarching antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode, Reckoner.
He is a former judge and former friend of FBI agent, David Rossi, who orchestrates the deaths of multiple criminals who unfairly escaped his court with the help of Tony Mecacci.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- After realizing that he has cancer, he decides to spend the remainder of his days punishing criminals who were declared innocent due to technicalities. He does so by hiring the hitman, Tony Mecacci.
- Although the murders he had Tony commit were brutal, it’s hard to feel bad for the victims since they consisted of Rita Haslat, who left a young boy to starve to death, Bill Levington, who was a serial rapist, and Ben Vanderwaal, who had been molesting his stepdaughter.
- Predicting that the BAU would discover his connection to the victims, Schuller turns himself in to distract the authorities and give Tony more time.
- When interrogated by Morgan and Rossi, Schuller stands his ground and does his best not to reveal too much.
- When Rossi lies and says that he and Schuller's late wife, Emma, had an affair, Schuller is saddened, but nonetheless calm.
- While initially he seemed to have ordered the death of the man who accidentally killed his wife in a moment of petty revenge, it’s later revealed that this was a ruse by him to force the BAU into believing that his plan was done.
- He orchestrates his own death by having Tony sniper him in the head in front of the Police Department to ensure that he dies by his own terms.
- He is one of the few unsubs to actually outsmart the BAU and kill all his victims using intelligence and determination.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He hired Tony Mecacci to torture and kill three former defendants in ironic ways, such as starving Rita before shooting her or castrating Levington before shooting him.
- He ordered for Dan Payton, the drunk driver who accidentally killed Emma, to be beaten to death with a bat for the sake of deceiving the authorities.
Trivia[]
- He and his accomplice, Tony Mecacci, are the only Criminal Minds MBs.
- He appears to be based on Lawrence Wargrave, as both are terminally ill former judges who decide to end their days by killing unpunished criminals before committing suicide (albeit by proxy in Schuller's case).
