~ Brother Mouzone to Cheese after shooting him. |
Brother Mouzone is a recurring character in HBO's The Wire.
He is a skilled hitman from an unnamed New York crime syndicate who initially comes to Baltimore after being hired by Avon Barksdale to keep rival dealers out of Barksdale territory. Although it's not confirmed, his clothing and mannerisms suggest he is a member of the Nation of Islam.
He is portrayed by Michael Potts.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has borderline mythical status in the criminal underworld, being so feared that Proposition Joe gives up on dealing in the towers so long as Mouzone is around. In The Wire's realistically gritty depiction of Baltimore, Mouzone and Omar Little are the only characters depicted as larger-than-life.
- He's impeccably polite and well spoken at all times, saying "good day to you sir" after shooting Cheese.
- He is cultured, enjoying intellectual magazines such as Harper's and The Nation.
- When Omar has him at gunpoint and it appears as if Omar's about to shoot him, Mouzone calmly tells him that he's made peace with God and doesn't really mind dying.
- He quickly sees through Stringer Bell's deceptions despite Stringer previously being established as a skilled manipulator.
- Upon learning that he was set up by Stringer, he immediately gets over any animosity with Omar since he knows it's not Omar's fault, showing him to be above such petty feuds.
- He traps Avon Barksdale in a no-win situation where he either has to give up Stringer Bell or Mouzone will expose Stringer's manipulation of him and cause the Barksdale organization to collapse by losing reputation with its suppliers.
- He has honor as well, as he finds overly brutal torture to be distasteful and tells Omar that what happened to Brandon wasn't his style. While it may seem like this remark is a bluff, he wouldn't have any reason to lie since he doesn't mind that much if Omar kills him. Further demonstrating this, when he captures Dante, he just roughs him up a bit, which is nothing compared to what Wee-Bey did to Brandon.
- He's one of the few characters to oppose Omar without insulting his sexuality, and he even mocks Lemar for his "visceral homophobia."
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He is a professional hitman, and according to Proposition Joe, he has "more bodies on him that a Chinese cemetery."
- He shoots Cheese to keep him off Barksdale turf.
- He kidnaps Dante.
