Cad Bane is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.
He was a male Duros, born on the planet of Duro, who rose to become a bounty hunter during the Clone Wars. Ruthless and deadly, Bane worked for the highest bidder, and earned the reputation as the galaxy's best and most fearsome mercenary — a title that he was able to claim after fellow bounty hunter Jango Fett perished in the opening battle of the war.
He was voiced by Corey Burton, who also voiced V.V. Argost from The Secret Saturdays and Megatron from Transformers: Animated.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He worked with Maul to break a Padawan out of an auction and killed the hunting parties Xev Xrexus send after them.
- He (alongside other bounty hunters) flawlessly liberate Ziro the Hutt from prison after breaking into the Galactic Senate.
- He steals a holocron from the Jedi Temple and escapes undetected, using his minions as distractions.
- He lures Ahsoka away from battle and then defeats her, using her as a bargaining chip for Anakin to open said holocron and opening the airlock behind her in order to escape.
- When held at gunpoint by Denal and Koho, he kills them both and disguises as Denal in order to fake his own death. When Ahsoka discovers the ruse, he quickly escapes by stealing a starfighter.
- He escapes Republic custody by luring Obi-Wan and Mace Windu into a trap.
- He holds his own in a fight with Obi-Wan and Quinlan Vos, both Jedi masters.
- He also manage to fight Anakin Skywalker on a flying ship once, despite having Obi-Wan (disguise as Rako Hardeen) intervene.
- He cleverly stages a prison riot in order to escape Coruscant.
- He has enough honor to save Rako Hardeen (actually Obi-Wan in disguise) from a rigged challenge in the Box, thinking he at least deserved a fair fight. He also payed his Aqualish informant with tons of credits who called him about Bayrn.
- He was genuinely respects his mentor Jango Fett and was disappointed that he never had a chance to properly settle his debts to him and settle who is the best bounty hunter title with Jango before his death showing that he at least respects him as a powerful bounty hunter.
- In spite of his obvious unpleasant and heinous personality, he is not at all lacking in charisma. This comes from his confident demeanor, clever wit, and intimidating presence. He exudes a sense of danger and unpredictability that draws attention. His ability to negotiate and manipulate situations, often with a calm yet menacing attitude, adds to his charm. He’s a character who commands respect and fear, making him both compelling and memorable.
- He's an expert at Mexican standoffs, winning at least three onscreen. (He won 3 of them with his left hand despite often shooting with his right hand, also implying he’s taken the time to practice with both).
- Although he is ancient, he is exceptionally sharp, swift, and fast in his response timing as well as reflexes, even fulfilling his claim that he maintains being quicker than even Boba Fett himself.
- He puts up one hell of a fight in his final encounter with Boba Fett, even driving a rancor off with just his flamethrower. Before dying, Bane tells Boba there's no shame in defeat and doesn't show any fear when at his mercy (or lack thereof in this case).
- Despite having multiple really heinous actions, he isn’t too vile to be here as he is just trying to get his bounties at the end of the day and doesn’t ever kill needlessly.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- For starters, he's a professional yet sociopathic bounty hunter who isn't above murdering innocents who stand in the way of his goals.
- In Hostage Crisis, he murders a senator Philo by shooting him in the back, and then later blows up a room full of hostages just to cheer up Ziro the Hutt.
- He always treats his service droid Todo 360 like dirt.
- He is quite wrathful, expressing bouts of anger at little to no provocation, and even at times displaying his common homicidal tendencies.
- In the Holocron arc, he blows up his own techno-service droid Todo 360 as a distraction, tortures Bolla Ropal to death for information, and then kidnaps Force-sensitive infants for Palpatine's experiments.
- He killed a bounty hunter just because he liked his hat.
- At some point, he gave the holographic layout of the Jedi Temple to the Kage warrior brothers Rackham and Coburn Sear, with which they attempted to attack the Jedi temple.
- In The Bad Batch, he admits he's killed countless clones over the years. He also kidnaps Omega, who's just a little girl. He also continues to kidnap Force-sensitive kids for the Advance Science Division.
- He was hired by the Galactic Empire on one such mission, Bane and Todo travel to the planet Caraad to capture a force-sensitive infant named Bayrn after being tipped off by an informant. They easily incapacitate Bayrn's mother and deliver the captive infant to Dr. Emerie Karr and Commander Scorch at the Imperial Orbital Space Station.
- It is implied he may have been hired by Dr. Royce Hemlock to kidnap the three Force-sensitive children—Eva, Jax, and Sami—that were held inside a secured room within the secret facility Mount Tantiss on the planet Weyland as part of the top secret Project Necromancer overseen both by Hemlock and Emperor Palpatine.
- In The Book of Boba Fett, he nearly kills Cobb Vanth and then taunts Boba with not just that fact but also the latter's past tragedy with the Tusken raiders.
Trivia[]
- One of the inspirations that Star Wars creator George Lucas had in mind for the bounty hunter who became Cad Bane was Leef Van Cleef's gunslinger Angel Eyes (who is Too Much Of A Baddie by being a sadistic murderer and torturer) who served as the main antagonist of the classic Western film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
