Me, I'm dishonest. And a dishonest man, you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly...stupid.
~ Jack, to Hector Barbossa.

Captain Jack Sparrow is the main protagonist of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

He is one of the nine pirate lords in the Brethren Court, the Pirate Lords of the Seven Seas. He prefers to negotiate or trick his enemies in the most dangerous situations and fight only when necessary. Jack can be described as a true anti-hero since he embodies the ideals of a true pirate, doing what he deems necessary to keep himself out of trouble though usually failing at doing so, while also having a plentiful of genuine heroic moments.

He was portrayed by Johnny Depp.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • For starters, he is practically a master at obfuscating stupidity with his love for rum and wenches, and it makes him extremely fun to watch. It's even questioned in-universe whether Jack plans it all out or just makes it up as he goes along.
  • While he's called a coward who always runs away from a fight in-universe, it's more of an informed attribute than anything else. Despite abandoning his crew to the Kraken in Dead Man's Chest, he has a quick change of heart and goes back to save said crew just in time to save those he could, after which he gracefully accepts (if not welcomes) his own death by lunging towards the Kraken's giant mouth with a sword. He even forgoes two whole chances for immortality in order to save Will and Angelica.
  • Despite being a pirate, he has a strong, genuine moral code since he tries his best to avoid hurting innocent civilians if he can help it, since he opts not to shoot Will when they first met and he got in the way. There's also a deleted scene in At World's End where he tells Beckett "people aren't cargo mate", showing he's against slavery.
  • He's played so brilliantly by Johnny Depp.
  • He's an expert swordsman and gunslinger.
  • In his youth, he managed to defeat Armando Salazar by taunting him into following him into the Devil's Triangle cave and making a risky maneuver to turn his ship around, which caused Salazar's ship to be destroyed.
  • After saving Elizabeth from drowning, he quickly uses her as a hostage to escape the Navy, and would've succeeded there if it wasn't for Will.
  • He sneaks with Will to the HMS Dauntless by using an air bubble in a boat underwater, tricking everyone into thinking they were stealing the Dauntless, when in reality it was a diversion to steal the Interceptor instead, even taking out the rudders on the Dauntless so they couldn't follow them.
  • He tricks Barbossa into not killing Will immediately by telling him about the incoming Navy troops, tricking him into thinking he was making a deal with him, only to successfully free Will, fight, shoot and kill Barbossa.
    • In order to gain the upper hand fighting Barbossa, Jack sneakily steals a piece of cursed Aztec gold, turning himself into an undead skeleton.
  • He manages to escape the cannibal tribe despite being strapped to a pole.
  • He uses Elizabeth's heart's desire to find Will by giving her his compass, which would lead him by proxy to the location of Davy Jones' heart.
  • He figures out the method to escape Davy Jones' Locker by flipping the Black Pearl upside-down, getting everyone to flip the ship upside-down with him.
  • He makes a deal with Beckett and then escapes his ship, using a cannon to propel himself back to the Pearl, while also having the cannon damage Beckett's ship badly enough so they couldn’t follow him.
  • He kicks Will off his ship and gives him the compass so that Beckett can find the Brethren court, makes Elizabeth the Pirate King to start the battle, and gets himself captured onboard the Flying Dutchman so that when the battle begins, he can find the Chest which he successfully steals.
  • He manages to trick Davy Jones into revealing the location of the key, allowing him to open the chest and get the heart.
  • He managed to escape King George's custody by first making noise with the shaking of his chains so that they would remove them first, taking a cloth from the table, positioning a chair near a window during his convo with George, having the guards grab him so he could knock the guards guns up and they shoot the chandelier, using the chair to break the window, and having a guard slip on the table cloth and fall out of the window which Jack used to propel himself up the chandelier, allowing him to swing to safety and even eat the cream puff he kicked up to the chandelier earlier.
  • He manages to retrieve the chalices for the Fountain of Youth and made a deal with Blackbeard to let Gibbs go, which he really was using to have Gibbs take back the Pearl for him.
  • He tricks Blackbeard by lying about which chalice had the tear in it because he knew he would choose to save himself over his daughter, which resulted in Angelica being saved and Blackbeard's death.
  • He helps Barbossa sacrifice himself by giving him his sword so that he could take down Salazar.
  • By the end of Dead Men Tell No Tales, he gets his crew and ship back, fully bouncing back from his bad luck.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Being a pirate and all, his entire life's purpose is to "raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer [his] weasely black guts out."
  • While still far from cowardly, he has no qualms cheating in a fight, or betraying others for self-gain. He was even willing to sacrifice 100 souls (including Will) to Davy Jones, and helps lure mermaids to get captured or killed by Blackbeard.
