Which would you rather have, the crouton or the entire Caesar salad? Of course, we will eat the mice, but only after we have exploited their labors. We are nice to the mice because it is intelligent to be so. See, if we talk sweetly, they will come in droves. If we hiss, they will run and we will have to chase after them, an unnecessary expenditure of calories.
~ Cat R. Waul revealing his plan and motives to his henchmen.
Okay, chaps, it's become necessary to put these dogs through obedience school… KILL.
~ Cat R. Waul ordering his henchmen to kill Fievel, Tiger, and Wylie Burp for stopping his plans of turning the mice into mouse burgers.

Cat R. Waul is the main antagonist of Amblimation's 1st animated feature An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, the first sequel to Don Bluth's 2nd animated feature An American Tail, and the TV series Fievel's American Tails. He is the leader of the Cactus Cat Gang and the second nemesis of Fievel Mousekewitz.

He was voiced by John Cleese in Fievel Goes West and Gerrit Graham in Fievel's American Tails.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He has the demeanor of a cultured, sophisticated gentleman and is a master orator. This charm allows him to persuade what is possibly the entire rat population of New York City to go to the west, with false promises of friendship.
  • He is also highly intelligent, as shown when he orchestrates a cat attack on the mice in New York City to lure them into the sewers, where he (using a cowboy mouse marionette) convinces them to move to Green River, where he later tricks the mice into helping him build a town and their own mousetrap. If it hadn't been for Fievel, who stumbled upon the cats, his plot would no doubt have worked.
  • After catching Fievel overhearing his plans, he still keeps his charming character when he debates with himself whether to eat Fievel or not as he tortures him with butter sauce, before letting him go but having Chula chase after him and send him flying off the train, so as to not arouse suspicion among the mice.
  • He is genuinely fond of Tanya because of her beautiful singing, even deciding to spare her life.
  • Even as the main antagonist, he's at least not as vile as Warren T. Rat or Mr. Grasping.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He has his cats attack the mice in New York and cause plenty of violence.
  • He has the mice do labor as they help him build the town and attempts to kill them with a giant mousetrap once they have outlived their usefulness.
  • He tries to kill Fievel when he sees him in the saloon bar and again when Fievel, Tiger and Wylie Burp stop him from killing the mice.
  • After the mice escape from the trap, he tries to kill them another way by shooting a gun at them.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Don Bluth character to be a Magnificent Baddie.
