“ | If you're smart you'll leave town-Now! Or else, dear Phoebus will learn all about your little plot to destroy his friends. And this time, Papa's not around to save you! Also, at least in Gypsy circles, you are a marked man, Malus. If I were you, I'd watch my back. | „ |
~ Clopin to a defeated Malus after Jean-Michel's demise. |
Clopin Trouillefou, also known as the Gypsy King, is the secondary antagonist of What REALLY Happened, a 1997 Fanfiction of Disney's adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
In the story, film's main antagonist Judge Claude Frollo and his actions in the latter half of the movie are reinterpreted, as Frollo is revealed to have been captured by Clopin, the leader of the persecuted Parisian Romani, and his old rival Jean-Michel Du Champs, who dresses up as Claude and incriminates the judge as a mad tyrant so as to get him executed. Eventually betrayed by Jean-Michel and his bastard son, Malus, Clopin will still manage to get the heroic Quasimodo and Captain Phoebus on his side and turn the tides on his co-conspirators.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Although downplayed compared to his comic relief role in the film, as well as paired with a much grimmer personality, Clopin is still a very witty, comedic and somewhat hammy entertainer.
- He is a well-intentioned extremist who wishes for his people, the Parisian Romani, to be freed from ethnic persecution and will do anything he can to ensure they are never oppressed again.
- As the leader and "king" of the Gypsies, he has evaded Judge Claude Frollo's persecution for years by hiding, alongside his people, in a carefully hidden lair called the Court of Miracles.
- He is beloved in Paris as a wonderful entertainer, especially during the yearly Feast of Fools.
- Through spies all over, he knows almost all that happens in the city, even knowing of Quasimodo, Frollo's adoptive son he keeps hidden away in Notre Dame's bell tower.
- Along with Frollo's old friend-turned-rival, Jean-Michel Du Champs and his son Malus, he plans out a scheme to get rid of Frollo for good: disguising Jean-Michel as the judge to incriminate Frollo as a crazed tyrant and have all of Paris turn on him.
- He sends his beautiful henchwoman, Esmeralda, to seduce Frollo during the Feast of Fools, so that all of "Frollo"'s insane behaviour would be assumed to be born of a lustful obsession for the girl.
- He drugs Frollo's dinner and captures him, locking him away in his own dungeon.
- Through the disguised Jean-Michel, the plan to have Paris turn on Frollo succeeds.
- When Clopin picks up on Jean-Michel and Malus' intentions of double-crossing him and be rid of him and all the Romani, he and Esmeralda manipulate Quasimodo and the Captain of the guards Phoebus into staying on their side through an elaborate set-up. This results in Phoebus, Quasimodo, Esmeralda and the rest of Paris' combined efforts defeating "Frollo" and his soldiers and Jean-Michel's demise.
- He reveals to have been aware of their treachery to the now orphaned Malus and warns him to leave France, for now Clopin's men will be after Malus for his double-crossing.
- When Clopin and Esmeralda's actions indirectly lead to Malus' death and his vengeful siblings Solange and Jules destroy the Court of Miracles and massacre the Romani, Clopin and the other survivors hide away in an abandones monastery.
- He has a reluctant Esmeralda feign being the happy wife of Phoebus and start a family with him so that she will live a life safe from danger, showing his genuine care for her.
- Even if paralized from the Romani's massacre, Clopin doesn't give up and continues trying to come up with a scheme to have his revenge.
- All in all, the only reason Clopin didn't succeed in killing the real Frollo and he fell victim to Solange and Jules was because of time-travelling, Sci-Fi elements in the story that Clopin, as a commoner in the XV Century, had no possible way of predicting and taking into account.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Although necessary for them to make a living, through his Romani underlings Clopin has stolen and conned the people of Paris for years.
- While the fanfic's attempts at making Frollo sympathetic may not succeed on a lot of readers, as he still is a xenophobic ruler and very hard on Quasimodo, so Clopin's conspiracy and attempted assassination of him may not be too bad, he also manipulated and endangered Quasimodo, Phoebus and pretty much all of Paris.
- Through a disguised Jean-Michel, Clopin has a lot of Paris burned and destroyed (with a possible high number of casualties) so as to incriminate Frollo as a tyrant.
Trivia[]
- This is the only version of Clopin to be a Magnificent Baddie, as the original Novel version may be too heinous and not charming enough, while the Disney version of him, while very charming, didn't do enough in the film, Fridge Logic set aside.
- Although a fanon character, he is the only MB to come from the Disney Renaissance.
