Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. I have the only gun on board. Welcome to Con Air.
~ Cyrus' most famous quote, upon assuming control of the Con Air.

Cyrus Grissom, also known as Cyrus the Virus, is the main antagonist of the 1997 action film Con Air. He is a psychopathic career criminal and murderer who masterminded the hijacking of the titular airplane.

He was portrayed by John Malkovich.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He is a master criminal who masterminded the hijacking of the Jailbird, and later the Con Air.
  • He initiated the plan to exchange prisoners at Carson City and escape with his partner, Fransisco, so he can flee to South America with his gang.
  • Cyrus and his men disguised as law enforcement personnel at another prison, and tricked the staff here into freeing other criminals.
  • He had Pinball, one of his men, to take the tracker out of the Jailbird and place it on another plane, as a distraction for the FBI.
  • He had some standards against rapists, such as Johnny 23 from his team. And he threatens to kill him if he tries to rape Sally Bishop, the only female guard on the plane.
  • He rewards loyalty with generosity, and hurts his own people only as a punishment for betrayal.
  • While it's argued that he is xenophobic, judging from him calling a hostage DEA agent he took racial slurs, it's too vague to say the least. The fact that he had black humor adds up to it too.
  • Although his murder of Francisco may make him too brutal, Francisco deserved it for being a cowardly drug lord who was going to backstab Cyrus and escape by himself.
  • While he does have a breakdown, Cyrus soon recovers from it.
  • The fact that he was still alive along with some inmates after the plane crash, was pretty impressive, and he could've got away if it wasn't for Poe.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Before the film, he was already a criminal who committed robbery, arson and murder.
  • He murdered eleven inmates in the prison, and the bomb he planted in his cell killed another fifteen people.
  • He burned Francisco alive after he betrayed him, before ordering his men to kill more thirty military personnel.
  • He attempted to crash the plane into Los Angeles, while threatening to kill Poe's daughter Casey.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Bruckheimer film villain to be MB.
