Darkrai is the main antagonist of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness, and Explorers of Sky. Though he mainly appears in the post-game plot, he is revealed to have orchestrated the events of the entire game, thus making him the overarching antagonist of the main story.
In the first half of the post-game plot, Darkrai posed underneath the pseudonym of "Cresselia", adapted her personality and took her appearance, using it to pursue the protagonist and their partner.
What Makes him Magnificent?[]
- While Pure Evil, none of his crimes go into overtly disgusting territory, a huge reason being his vilest crimes being dampened by the censors. It also helps he lacks any viciously sadistic streak and is mostly stoically pragmatic in nature.
- Cleverly sabotaged Temporal Tower in order to try and plunge the world to darkness so that he can rule.
- Attacked the protagonist and Grovyle when they travelled back in time which leads to the hero gaining amnesia and turning into a Pokémon.
- Disguised himself as Cresselia and using his realistic illusions to get the protagonist and partner to end their lives by making them think their existence is threatening the space-time continuum.
- Tricks Palkia into trying to eliminate the heroes by convincing him they were responsible for distortions in space and that killing them will everything be back to normal when his scheme to get them to surrender failed.
- Lures the heroes into a trap by trapping the protagonist in a nightmare and trying to convince the protagonist and his partner to join his rule, with the partner seemingly joining Darkrai's side.
- Calls up backup Pokémon to try and get rid of Team Poképals and the real Cresselia in one fell swoop.
- Summons a dimensional hole for an easy escape, planning to travel through time and restart his scheme in another historical point.
What Makes him a Baddie?[]
- Collapsed Temporal Tower, thus putting the entire planet into a state of paralysis.
- Drove Dialga insane and using him as a helpless puppet to rule the paralyzed planet.
- Transformed the player into a Pokémon and gave them amnesia when they and Grovyle went back into the past to stop the collapse of Temporal Tower.
- Tried to drown the world in nightmares and darkness using distortions in space that increased his powers.
- Psychologically manipulated the players and Palkia into believing the players were responsible for the spatial distortion in an attempt to eliminate both of the players.
- Put Azurill and Palkia into endless nightmares and tried repeating the process to every Pokémon on the planet.
- Tried to kill the player, their partner, and Cresselia using backup Pokémon when his plan to try and convince the former two to join him fails.
