~ Death |
Death is a supporting character in the CW dark fantasy series Supernatural.
He is the upholder of the natural order and the Primordial force of Death in the universe, being the leader of the Reapers and the one responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife. He often comes into conflict with Sam and Dean, as their repeated resurrections disrupt the natural order of the universe.
He is portrayed by Julian Richings.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Being one of the oldest beings in existence, he is considered equal to God in power. While he was locked inside the Earth for centuries, upon being released and bound to Lucifer he instead expresses annoyance over the fact that it is Lucifer controlling him, as he considers the Archangel to be nothing more than a bratty child having a tantrum.
- He is able to instill fear in Dean Winchester, who normally is willing to stand up to beings of immense power. When Dean asks if Death is going to kill him, Death simply remarks that Dean is too insignificant for him to bother killing him.
- Despite being annoyed by Dean's snarky personality, Death still gives him his Horsemen ring so that Dean can open the door to Lucifer's Cage, sealing the Devil inside and also breaking the binding spell that Death was under.
- When Dean comes to Death and requests that he rescue Sam's soul from the Cage, Death agrees to do it if Dean puts on Death's ring and acts as him for a day. He does this knowing Dean will fail as he won't be able to reap the souls of innocent, but it is done to teach him a lesson about what happens when you disrupt the natural order. When Dean fails to reap a little girl and the result is the natural order almost being disrupted, he ultimately takes the ring off and fails the challenge. After seeing Dean learned his lesson, Death decides to save Sam's soul from the Cage.
- Death is later bound by Sam, Dean, and Bobby in order to have him kill Castiel, who has absorbed all the souls in Purgatory to become then new God. Death is more annoyed at the fact he is bound than anything, and when confronting Castiel he simply tells him that he is not God and nearly kills him, prompting Castiel to break the binding spell he is under. Death then thanks Castiel and shows no further interest in killing him.
- When Sam asks if Death cares at all what happens to them, he says that he really doesn't, but since he finds Castiel irritating, he makes another Eclipse for the Winchesters and Bobby so that they can enact the spell to send all the souls in Castiel back to Purgatory.
- Dean eventually is given the Mark of Cain, and due to it corrupting him and making him unstable, he summons Death to kill him. Death explains he can't, as it would release the Darkness, but offers to take Dean somewhere in which he would still be alive but no longer a danger to anyone around him. Dean agrees to this, but Death also stipulates that Dean must kill Sam, as Death knows Sam will never stop trying to save Dean if he does this.
- When Dean instead stabs Death with his scythe rather than kill Sam, Death simply looks mildly annoyed rather than upset or angry before crumbling into dust.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- While him reaping people is done for the greater good, he occasionally kills people unnecessarily such as when a man rudely bumps into him on the street or when he kills everyone in a pizza shop so that he can eat in it alone.
- He agrees to rescue Sam's soul from the Cage, but refuses to help Adam who is also trapped, resulting in him being trapped there for centuries.
- He tries to force Dean to kill Sam in exchange for taking Dean somewhere that he will no longer be a threat due to the Mark of Cain.
