I won’t dress it up. At their base, humans are no different from a flock of pigeons. If one bird flies right, they all go right. Every last one of them don’t try to see anything but their own gain and their own hubris. They’re all just an assembly of pretenders. For those kinds of people, it may have been alright for my mother’s death to be swept under the rug, but… I will have them pretend even more, I will stand far above from that flock of pigeons and I will control them!
~ Diego Brando's monologue.

Diego "Dio" Brando is the secondary antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. A British horse jockey and the alternate universe counterpart of Dio Brando, he serves as a formidable rival to Johnny and Gyro with his horse Silver Bullet and his Stand Scary Monsters.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • Although he isn't as hammy as his original counterpart, and is rather jerkish, Diego does have some noble and funny qualities, making a joke that made even Gyro cringe, complimenting Johnny's skills as a jockey, advising Johnny and Gyro to rest in a village nearby with him for a night and even showing basic decency once he gets involved in the search for the Corpse Parts by warning Johnny and Gyro to back off before he starts attacking.
  • He is a genius jockey in general. He puts himself in excellent places by analyzing the competition's horses and adapting to their situations (something he also uses in combat as seen with his fight against Johnny and Gyro for a Corpse Part), he makes good use of his Stand in attack, support and infiltration and figures out D4C's abilities by observing them.
  • While he does have a breakdown and is considered arrogant, Diego quickly recovers from it and removed his detestable arrogance later on.
  • While Valentine initially outsmarts Diego and even steals his Corpse Part, Diego adapts to his intellect very well, and ultimately manages to not only recover, but to completely corner him, and him losing only due to bad luck outside of both his and Valentine's control.
  • Unlike DIO, Diego's tragedy is much more sympathetic and does justifies his actions to an extent.
  • That being said, Diego is easily the least depraved version of DIO so far. On the other hand, every other version of Dio is an irredeemable monster (DIO himself, Heaven Ascension DIO, and Parallel World Diego).

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Worked with Funny Valentine, attempted to kill Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli once they got in the way of his goals to obtain the corpse.
  • Even when he started working with Johnny, Gyro and Wekapipo against Valentine, he is willing to leave Wekapipo to die by D4C's effects in order to return to the main universe.
  • Even his final turn to good and his team up with Hot Pants, is mostly out of self-interest and it's implied he still plans on seizing the Corpse for himself.

Trivia[]

  • He is so far the only version of Dio Brando to be a Magnificent Baddie. The original DIO disqualifies for being extremely cruel and sadistic, and the alternative Diego is a hate sink who attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl.
