Dr. Otto Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, is the main antagonist of the 2004 film Spider-Man 2, the second installment of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, and a major character in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
He was a scientist who became possessed by his own creation, four malevolent mechanical arms, after an experiment with his fusion reactor funded by Harry Osborn went horribly wrong. From there, Otto turned into a dangerous supervillain known as Doctor Octopus.
He's played by Alfred Molina, who also voiced Viggo Grimborn in Dragons: Race to the Edge and Mister Freeze from Harley Quinn.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
In General[]
- He's tragic due to being a genuinely good man before the accident happened, having a wife named Rosie who he loves, and wanting to create enough renewable energy for the entire world.
- He has a sarcastic sense of humor, like when he makes a joke about a money roll and a rubber band or when he says "butterfingers" while dropping Aunt May.
Spider Man 2[]
- He single-handedly robs a bank without getting caught.
- He defeats Spider-Man in their second-to-last fight and then delivers him to Harry in exchange for more tritium fuel, showing that he honors bargains.
- He redeems himself by dragging his fusion reactor down to the bottom of the river before it destroys at least half of New York, sacrificing his own life in the process.
Spider Man: No Way Home[]
- Once freed from his tentacles, he thanks the MCU Spider-Man for saving him and offers to help him.
- He tricks Electro into believing he's on his side and ends up helping the three Spider-Men defeat the villains, personally curing Electro.
- He also obtains the Arc Reactor to help achieve his dream of near-limitless energy after reconciling with his universe's Peter Parker.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
Spider Man 2[]
- He robbed a bank to gain the money used to rebuild the fusion reactor.
- He takes Aunt May hostage to escape the police, even dropping her to her near-death when Spider-Man corners him.
- He threatened Harry Osborn into telling him where Peter Parker was.
- Upon meeting Peter, he almost kills him for not telling where Spider-Man is, not aware of the fact they're the same person.
- He kidnaps Mary Jane, threatening to kill her if Spider-Man doesn't meet him at 3 PM.
- He throws two hostages at Spider-Man during their second-to-last fight in the movie. Then, once that plan fails, he removes the brakes on a speeding train full of people, which certainly would've crashed and thus killed everyone onboard if Spider-Man hadn't managed to stop it in time.
- He told MCU Spider-Man that he should've killed his little girlfriend when he had the chance, making the hero very angry because he thought he was talking about his MJ (Michelle Jones), not MJ (Mary Jane Watson).
- He was willing to have the fusion reactor destroy half of New York before Spider-Man ended up convincing him to redeem.
Spider Man: No Way Home[]
- Before he was cured in No Way Home, he tried to kill the MCU Spider-Man and was very rude and cynical to the thought of being "healed".
- He threatned to tear Peter limb from limb while he was being cured.
Trivia[]
- This is one of two versions of Doctor Octopus to be an MB, the other being the Spectacular Spider-Man version.
- He is the first of four Spider-Man movie villains to be an MB, followed by Vulture, Prowler and Morbius.
- An early script for Spider-Man 2 titled Amazing Spider-Man featured a version of Dr. Octopus who had none of the tragedy and redeeming qualities that he had in the final script and committed much more disgusting crimes. Had this version been the one to be published, he would've been too heinous to qualify as MB. Ironically, he would have been a Hate Sink.
- He is the only Raimiverse Spider-Man villain to be a MB. The others are either too vile or not magnificent enough to qualify.
