You poor, sweet summer children... This was all a total walk in the park for me. You're no match for the complete whackjob you're up against. But, still... you tried. So here's a lil' hint. The Duke is the reason my friend died. And me killing Mystic and the folks on the island? It's, like, alllll connected. Senior Detective died because of the Duke. I killed Mystic, and now I'm gonna die too. Not cuz of anyone else--but out of my own free will. Just chew on that for a sec... What do those words really mean?
~ Downtown giving a final hint before her death.

Inumi Sanae, better known by her alias Downtown Detective, is a major antagonist of the mystery game Process of Elimination. After an incident where her best friend, Miyuki, was murdered by the Quartering Duke, she began working with him. Seeming like a rather bubbly, yet unintelligent girl on the surface, Downtown built up the perfect persona in order to be able to manipulate the detectives more efficiently, and kill Mystic Detective for knowing too much.

She was voiced by Anzu Suzuki.

What Makes Her Magnificent?[]

  • She's a rather sympathetic individual. Her best friend was murdered by the Quartering Duke, and, while investigating, she learned that Miyuki both was the victim, and yet also the killer of another person. The Duke then blackmailed Downtown into working under him under threat of exposing Miyuki's misdeeds.
  • Probably has the best facade out of any character within the game. Setting it up since day one, she tricks every single person on Morgue Island into seeing her as a stereotypical blonde popular girl, outgoing yet incompetent. She even set up routines, such as doing her nails in front of people and acting without much regard for personal space, in order to keep herself from looking suspicious when she uses poison on her fake nail to kill Mystic after digging it into his skin.
  • Knowing Mystic is the smartest man on the island and that he'll figure out her and the Duke's plan rather quickly, she sets up the perfect plan to get him killed. Repeatedly citing the doors being hard to open due to shoddy construction instead of blatant sabotage, Downtown led everyone into believing her without much effort, prepared a doorstop ahead of time in order to keep the door to the trap room open, later replaced it with a block of ice, and then prepared to frame Posh by stealing her dPad, which would cause her to have to run off and search for it, which would be captured by the cameras.
  • While most other culprits are foiled by stupid mistakes (ex. Workaholic dragging the chair around the corner, which caused everyone to realize it was him, as Techie, the other person around that corner, was in a wheelchair), Downtown is foiled by bad timing, as Incompetent just so happened to come out of the shower when she went to go dispose of her fake nail in the toilet. Prioritizing her own alibi, she went to the main room to secure it, and unfortunately ended up in the same room as Bookworm, whose photographic memory captured her missing nail.
  • Her persona is so good that, even when accused when she's the only suspect, hardly anyone else buys it, not seeing Downtown as capable of murdering someone in cold blood.
  • While she does freak out a little when accused, it's understandable, as she very well could be killed for screwing up, and it ultimately culminates with just a groan, and she goes back to normal rather quickly.
  • Even after her facade is shattered, she takes up a new one of a sadistic and cruel girl, so that she can kill herself without anyone mourning her. While this isn't spelled out explicitly as a second facade, this is made pretty clear in multiple ways, with her stating she enjoyed Miyuki's death, although her actions show anything other than that, and she seems to respect Incompetent primarily because he shares so many traits with her, along with Downtown becoming calmer and kinder once she's alone with Incompetent.
  • Goes out on her own terms, releasing a poison gas to kill herself and clear out the room. When Incompetent stays behind and solves where the secret passage is, she congratulates him, and when begged to leave the room and survive with them, she refuses to do so in order to make sure her death isn't undignified.
  • In her final moments, she gives a clue about Senior and her "dying" while Mystic was "killed", hinting to Senior's death being technically a suicide, which ends up being what exposes the Duke's true identity to the detectives by the end of the game.

What Makes Her a Baddie?[]

  • Releases a poisonous gas in the Snarks research facility, leading to dozens of people inside dying.
  • Murders Mystic, traumatizing his adoptive daughter, and tries to pin it on Posh.
  • Works with the Quartering Duke, a prolific serial killer. While not exactly out of her own will, she still is ultimately killing dozens of people just to protect one person's image.
  • Releases poisonous gases yet again to kill herself, which needlessly endangered everyone in the mansion, as Downtown states the poison is so deadly that simply touching it is certain death.
