“ | I mean, I totally did betray them. To be fair, it'd be pretty humiliating for the Abyss Order if we unleashed the power of the Abyss on them and they were just frolicking around with no side effects. | „ |
~ Enjou to the Traveler and Paimon after betraying the Vishaps |
Enjou is a minor antagonist of Genshin Impact, serving as the main antagonist of the Enkanomiya story. He is a member of the Abyss Order, one of the two primary antagonistic forces in the story. In 2.5's Three Realms Gateway Opening Event Quest, he returns as the overarching antagonist. He also returns as the main antagonist in the Scions of the Canopy Tribal Chronicles in 5.0.
He is voiced by Patrick Seitz in the English dub and Satoshi Yamaguchi in the Japanese dub.
What makes him Magnificent?[]
- Disguises himself as a normal NPC to earn the Traveler's trust, and helps them explore Enkanomiya by translating ancient texts. He even straight up hints at himself turning into a fire monster and yet is still trusted anyway.
- His reveal as an Abyss Lector is played as a plot twist given that he effortlessly fooled the Traveler
- Is very charismatic and manipulative.
- Extremely affable and friendly to the Traveler, to the point of complimenting them once they bested him.
- Has a badass design for the Lectors.
- Unlike the rest of the Abyss Order, Enjou doesn't hate the Traveler or humanity despite seeing them as enemies. And while he does display some caution with the Vishaps, considering the fact that the Traveler is betrayed by one later in the story, his statements are completely justified.
- While he does get beaten, he still puts up a good fight. In fact, he intended to lose.
- Accepts defeat with honor and dignity, before hinting that Paimon may betray the Traveler in the future before leaving.
- Widely regarded by the fandom as one of the coolest non-playable characters and is considered a chad.
- Admits that while he has a lot of reasons to kill the Traveler, he chooses not to because he likes them.
- A lot of his dialogue has a deeper meaning, and he is always extremely reasonable.
- When he returns in the Three Realms Gateway Offering storyline, he is just as affable and likable as ever.
- While his act of poisoning the elemental beings in Enkanomiya is very heinous, his plan to do so only serves to show how competent and manipulative he is.
- He somehow knows about the Vishap people and reveals that Tsumi is trying to get revenge on him for his betrayal. He also comments on how her actions are understandable.
- He calls his comrades incompetent by saying that they're falling over themselves to serve the Traveler's Twin while he's doing stuff without consequences.
- While he is responsible for putting all of Enkanomiya in danger due to Tsumi trying to use the power of the Dainichi Mikoshi to suppress the Sangacorallia and create darkness to protect the vishaps, he gives the Traveler advice on how to save Enkanomiya, and while Paimon doesn't trust him, it is revealed that he was telling the truth.
- He asks various questions to a pair of kids in exchange for helping some Yumkasaur babies. When he notices the Traveler and Paimon approaching, he tells the kids that he alerted his friend to come help with intent on the Traveler and Paimon helping.
- He provides Kinich with an Abyss portal as part of a deal to be granted historical research.
- When he finds out Kinich brought the Traveler as backup and had Ajaw act as bait, he cuts his losses and accepts defeat with dignity, understanding that he wouldn't beat them in a fight.
- He takes Nanna and heals her up, presenting her to Huni after the Mountain King has been cleansed of Abyssal Energy.
What makes him a Baddie?[]
- Even though he is genuinely affable and likable, he is still a member of the Abyss Order and is still the Traveler's enemy.
- Attacks the Traveler after the defeat of the Coral Defenders.
- Attempts to infiltrate Enkanomiya to find a book providing evidence that the gods and Celestia aren't from Tevyat.
- Returns in the Three Realms Gateway Offering event, and it is revealed that he allied with the Vishaps by saying that he would plunge all of Enkanomiya into darkness so they could send their elites to Dainichi Mikoshi and rescue their captive kin. In return, they'd allow passage by the Abyss Order and let Enjou build three towers.
- Enjou admits he straight-up manipulated and betrayed the vishaps as the darkness of the Abyss would poison the elemental lifeforms in Enkanomiya and thus result in genocide, in which Paimon calls him pure evil. However, this doesn't make him too heinous as he explains this type of stuff is simply what the Abyss Order does, as he's pretty much just doing his job.
- He makes a deal to kill Kinich so that Ajaw could possess his body.
