Eren Kruger, also known as The Owl, is a supporting character in the dark fantasy anime/manga Attack on Titan. He is a spy pretending to be working for Marley's Public Security when he is actually a spy working undercover for an Eldian group of Restorationists that he is the leader of with the intentions of helping them overthrow the Marleyan government in order to liberate and restore Eldia, though he is willing to resort to extreme measures to accomplish this albeit reluctantly.

He is voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto in the Japanese sub and by Ray Chase (who also voices Bruno Bucciarati in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: GoldenWind, Gendo Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion Netflix dub)in the English dub.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • When he was a child and his father and the rebels against the Marleyan government were exposed and burnt alive, he manages to avoid being caught by hiding in a closet, though at the cost of having to watch the execution of his family.
  • He has a doctor alter up the results for his blood test in order to be able to pose as a Marleyan and successfully infiltrates the Public Security Office with his, tricking them into thinking that he is solely intent on working for them and assisting them in their actions against Eldians when in reality, he is an undercover spy assisting the Eldian group of Restorationists in freeing Eldians from their oppressions.
  • He keeps up a good facade as a spy in the Public Security Office with nobody there even slightly suspecting him of being a traitor while also managing to deliver information to the Restorationists without anybody finding out, even managing to prevent the Restorationists themselves from discovering his identity by referring to himself as "The Owl."
  • While he beats up Grisha as a punishment for exiting his zone with his sister to maintain his cover, he allows him to look at the blimps as he came all that way with his sister for that intent, not wanting that to be for nothing.
  • He is shown to be psychologically able to tell what a person feels just by studying their expressions as after the whole event where Gross murdered Faye and lied to her family with Grisha present about what happened to her, Kruger is able to tell just how much hatred was cooped up inside Grisha about what had happened.
  • This, in turn, causes Kruger to set up a whole plan as due to knowing that Grisha would want to help free other Eldians from oppression from this event, he sets up a meeting between him and the Restorationists to create an alliance between them with Grisha sooner becoming their leader and gaining a lover named Dina, who would become his wife and give birth to a son whom they would name Zeke and would assign him the task of being the one who will solidify the freedom of Eldians.
  • Once this ends up backfiring with Zeke betraying his parents and the other Restorationists by turning them in, Kruger is established to have had a backup plan for this where he would eventually have Grisha be the one who carries out the last mission from him once his part has been complete by giving his titan powers to him so that he would infiltrate the society from within the walls and take the power of the Founding Titan to free Eldians once and for all while giving him a list of instructions as to what to do afterwards in the future.
  • He manages to keep Grisha from being turned into a Titan by pretending to still plan on interrogating him to Sergeant Major Gross.
  • He shuts up Grisha when he was about to reveal Dina's heritage as this would have caused her to be forced to bear children for the enemy nation for the rest of her life with this information.
  • He saves Grisha from being fed to a titanized Restorationist comrade by Sergeant Major Gross by pushing the latter off the wall and onto the floor where he would be eaten by the titan. What gives him bonus points for this is that Gross is one of the biggest hate sinks in the anime and that he is effectively giving him a karmic death for his actions through this.
  • He then proceeds to turn into a titan himself and dropping his facade as a soldier working for the Marleyan government by taking out all the other troops there as a titan.
  • When Grisha reveals that he is too broken by the recent events to carry out Kruger's tasks, Kruger eventually manages to motivate him by reminding him of the traumas he experienced like his sister's death while telling him that the whole story started with him, managing to convince him to be willing to carry out the tasks soon enough.
  • He has a sympathetic motivation behind his actions, having experienced oppression with his family due to the xenophobic Marleyan society they lived in and eventually witnessing the execution of his family and their comrades at the hands of the government for trying to start an uprising to free other Eldians while hiding in a closet, having no other option.
  • He has a noble objective behind his actions as well, his intentions being to help free other Eldians from oppression as well as help restore Eldia as a whole.
  • He shows a ton of guilt over all the Eldians he had to assist the other soldiers in torturing and allowing to be titanized due to having to perform these acts to maintain his cover.
  • He is shown to have standards against Gross' sadistic persona as after he kicked him off the wall to be fed to a Titan himself, he asks if the experience is as interesting as he explained it was.
  • He also winds up redeeming himself albeit posthumously through assisting in deactivating the Rumbling and rescuing humanity, especially the Eldians from the Liberian Internment Zones.

What Makes Him A Baddie?[]

  • He assisted the other soldiers working for the Public Security Office in torturing thousands of Eldians by cutting off their fingers before either assisting in or allowing them to be titanized, the process involving them being painfully transformed into mindless beasts called Titans in order to maintain his cover.
  • When he spots a young Grisha and his sister Faye walking out of their internment zone to look at blimps take off, as part of his duty to maintain his facade, he offers him to either carry out labor as punishment or physical punishment with Grisha taking the latter for both himself and his sister, prompting Kruger to beat him by kicking him in the stomach.
  • When the Restorationists have been turned in by Zeke to the Public Security Office, Kruger assists in torturing them by cutting off their fingers, including Grisha's.
  • He allows most of the Restorationists to be turned into titans by the other soldiers on Gross' command as part of their duties, though he manages to prevent Grisha from being titanized by telling Gross that he still needs to interrogate him.
  • He also allows Dina to be turned into a titan and prevents Grisha from trying to stop this by shutting his mouth when he attempts to reveal her heritage to them, though he explains that he needed to do this to prevent her from falling into the enemy nation's hands and being forced to bear children for the rest of her life.
