Eren Yeager is the main protagonist of the Attack on Titan series. He is a former member of the Survey Corps, the leader of the Yeagerists, the last inheritor of the Attack Titan and later revealed to be the Founding Titan as well, and the inheritor of the Warhammer Titan as well.
The son of Grisha Yeager and his second wife, Carla, as well the half-brother of Zeke Yeager, Eren strove to wipe out all Titans upon seeing the tragic loss of his mother at the hands of one of them. Starting off as a more hotheaded and impulsive hero, when Eren inherits the memories of past memories of the Attack Titan wielders as well as memories of the future, Eren becomes more perceptive and collected, while also becoming a ruthless anti-villain at the same time. He is also the archenemy of Reiner Braun.
He is voiced by Yūki Kaji in Japanese and by Bryce Papenbrook in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He is extremely tragic and sympathetic, which helps the audience to root for him, despite his evil actions.
- Even before he fell into villainy, he had moments of magnificence, despite his hot-headedness.
- As a young child, he tracked down the location of 2 child traffickers and pretended to be a confused lost child before stabbing and killing them with a knife he had hidden, saving Mikasa from sex slavery.
- He figured out the weakness of the Armored Titan, which combined with his martial arts skills, helped him to find a way to break through Reiner's armor easily.
- He along with Armin came up with an ingenious plan to take down the Colossal Titan via having Armin sacrifice himself as well as Eren playing dead until Bertolt runs out of energy in his flesh so that the wall could be sealed and that Eren could be the one to take down the Colossal Titan to have him eaten later.
- For how vile Eren's crimes are, he does genuinely want peace for Paradis through his actions, clearly upset over the lengths he has to go as well as the selfish side to his motives as well that he is very happy to be finally defeated, while showcasing himself as a man capable of doing acts of genuine kindness like saving Ramzi even after falling off the slippery slope.
- Eren tried to see whether the future could be changed, even talking to other Marleyans when discussing with them with hopes of not having to commit the Rumbling, being very disappointed when he saw it couldn't be.
- Upon becoming less impulsive after the time-skip, Eren showcases genuine sympathy for the plight of his enemies as he himself descends to evil to the point of where he compared himself to Reiner in how they were the same.
- Severs his own leg and gouges his own eye to disguise himself as an injured soldier named Kruger to infiltrate Marley without raising suspicions at all.
- Manipulates Falco into handing over mail that contains his intel to the Paradis military with nobody being the wiser.
- Organizes the Raid on Liberio, transforming into the Attack Titan and massively crippling Marley's military and forcing it to turn to other nations, so he can focus the world's hatred onto himself for his grand plans.
- When dueling the Warhammer Titan, Eren showcases how much of a quick thinker he is, deducing where Lara would be as he notices the Warhammer Titan gets her energy from the bottom, and then use the Jaw Titan to crush the encasing around Lara and devour her so he can gain the Warhammer Titan's abilities.
- While his mistreatment towards Armin and Mikasa was cruel, it was solely done for the purpose to keep their hands clean once Eren started the Rumbling, which was successful as they ended up opposing him and living in the end. During his final meeting with them, he expressedly showed sorrow for it and admitted to Mikasa he always loved her.
- Using his charisma, he rallies up an entire legion of devoted fanatics, known as the Yeagerists, to take over the military and rally up public support.
- Even when threatened at gunpoint by Pieck, he doesn't panic and stares at it with a steely glare as he talks Pieck down into how she cannot actually shoot him.
- Outplays his genius brother, Zeke Yeager, for his own agenda, using him to gain access to the Paths of the Coordinate and find Ymir and gain her favour to claim the Founding Titan's power.
- The reason he in itself was able to gain Ymir's favour was due being the first to show genuine empathy and kindness for Ymir.
- Using the Founding Titan's powers, Eren manipulated events all across the timestream to ensure the chain of events that lead to his grand ascension from his father gaining the Founding Titan or setting up the event that caused his wrath against Titans to spare Bertolt so he can be sacrificed alter on to save Armin.
- Through Eren's attack, he was able to ensure the world will be weakened enough to leave Paradis alone for a few decades (centuries in anime) and ensure some peace.
- Knowing how unforgivable his crimes are, he secretly organizes his very death at the hands of his friends so that his name can be condemned in history while his friends are hailed as heroes to give the world a better chance of peace in the future as he takes the Titan power down with him.
- Accepting that the Rumbling was inevitable, Eren accepted his crimes in the end and showed Armin the glimpses of the world, while admitting no one has to forgive him any time soon.
- With how deep his manipulations run, nearly every character in the series after the time skip, one way or another, has been a pawn for Eren.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Even prior to his fall to villainy, he showed disturbingly violent tendencies.
- While the child traffickers certainly deserved to die, his complete lack of hesitance, shock or remorse after killing them, asserting that they were garbage that deserved it, is incredibly disturbing and unusual behavior for a 9-year old child.
- Regularly went into fits of rage and snapped in anger at people for making comments that went against his beliefs.
- Gleefully smiled after killing several Titans and being injured and proclaimed he would "kill them all" out loud, though this was before he knew they were once human.
- Caused thousands of dollars in property damage and killed several people from collateral damage while fighting Annie. While harm was inevitable due to his massive size and destructive power, he took little care to prevent the damage.
- Organizes the devastating raid of Liberio that saw hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians, women and children included, killed.
- Coldly emotionally manipulated and viciously insulted Mikasa and Armin in order to ensure their distance from them, questioning Armin's own moral agency due to having Bertholdt's memories and calling Mikasa a spineless lapdog that he had always despised. While these comments were mostly not his actual feelings and stated in order to ensure their security, it was still immensely cruel.
- In order to keep the chain of events, he sent the Smiling Titan to devour his mother, as well as pushed his father into massacring the Reiss family.
- In prison he threatens Hange Zoe's life.
- Through the Yeagerists organized multiple terrorist attacks like the assassination of Premier Darius Zachly.
- Knew and allowed Zeke's plan to poison the wine with his spinal fluid in order to force the military to relent, though he only intended to use it as a bargaining chip and not to actually turn them into Titans and was horrified when Zeke used his scream to do so.
- Initiates the Rumbling, a cataclysmic event that sees 80% of humanity outside Paradis Island and most of all surface-dwelling life on Earth exterminated as billions get trampled and crushed underneath the feet of marching Colossal Titans.
- Frankly stated to Armin that hadn't they stopped him, he would have killed all of the people outside the Walls without hesitation, stating that Armin and his allies would only be allowed to try saving 20% of the population.
