“ | Well ya' might as well know so you spread the word about racism, it's a galaxy wide issue. A filthy concept. Honestly, if I see discrimination of any kind, I shoot 'em. The universe may be vast, but there is no room or excuse for it. One discriminatory comment and yer' done. People see it as harsh, I see it as cleaning. | „ |
~ Ethyl Countrisyde. |
Ethyl Countrisyde is the main protagonist of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy, serving as the main protagonist of all three stories. He is a novakid outlaw who is dedicated to wiping out discrimination across the universe, shooting anyone who make any discriminatory comments. Despite being an outlaw, he is a good man, who cares about the well being of others, and his crewmates. He became the captain of The Black Nebula, and later helped rebuild the Protectorate, being one of the leaders at the time, until the end of the third story, where he sacrificed himself to destroy the Backup Plan, saving the universe from destruction. He posthumously became a symbol of hope.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a genuinely tragic and sympathetic backstory, with him wanting to join the protectorate, but facing tons of discrimination and racism, which left him vulnerable to Desert, who led him down a life of crime and ruined his life by making him an outlaw. He lost his mother in an occasus cult attack right after he broke out of jail, which was the final straw for him, which motivated him to end discrimination, as it ruined countless lives.
- Although he was manipulated by Desert in the past, he was vulnerable and younger at the time, so it is understandable. Not only that, but he learned from his mistakes, not trusting anyone again for a long time, until he met Katsu and Tori.
- He is a well intentioned extremist who dedicates himself to ending discrimination across the universe, so nobody ends up as badly as he did, and to make it a better place, shooting anyone who discriminated against others.
- Hell, even here he has limits. He makes sure to get context quickly before he shoots, to make sure he doesn’t shoot someone who wasn’t actually being racist. He also refuses to shoot people under the age of 18, showing that he will not hurt children.
- He is a master orator, who speaks with confidence and has an arsenal of great quotes up his sleeve. He also is very witty and knows exactly how and when to speak.
- He is an excellent strategist, and thinks on his feet even during combat.
- He is able to keep his cool at all times and never has an outburst, no matter how bad someone or something is.
- He is great at manipulating others, as he is shown to be able to con and scam people really easily, stating he “hits em where it hurts”, showing he is able to hit people emotionally to convince them to buy his scams.
- He is good at bribing others, even prison guards, as he was able to store compressed pixel voxels in his hair so it wasn’t detected, which he used to bribe the guards to escape.
- He is very honorable, as he lives up to his promises, and doesn’t like to scare good people. He puts his gun away in busy areas as he doesn’t want to scare or terrify the public. He also obeys the rules sometimes, even if it doesn’t benefit him at all (or in some cases, hinder him), showing his honor.
- He escaped from the sheriff rather easily, as he put a smoke bomb in the saloon, and tricked the Sheriff into hitting someone else, causing a bar fight, allowing his escape.
- He promised to clear Katsu and Tori’s names after Mika ruined them, and was able to do it, even after Desert exposed him as his ex partner in crime.
- He conducted a brilliant plan to save Tori and the hostage florans in the village that Mika held hostage, and he and his crew managed to get them all out alive.
- He was able to lure every single FEO agent away from the scene by making fake floran sounds, then shooting them with a silenced pistol not to alarm the other agents, allowing Nightheart and Lexie to evacuate the florans safely.
- He got Moonquill to leave the ship and cease her attack by sabotaging her ship successfully, and threatening to blow up her ships, taking advantage of the fact Moonquill cares for her soldiers.
- He distracted the stargazers in the temple by driving empty hovercars into the temple.
- Even though he and everyone else was decided by Xochtal, he makes up for it by tricking Xochtal himself later.
- Despite being put through a lot of illusions, Ethyl saw Xochtal’s attempted murder on Robin and Lexie as real, and attacked his staff, destroying the illusions. Ethyl then faked his death afterwards.
- While everyone presumed he had died, he substituted a lot of the stardust in a container with gunpowder, and lit a match right as Xochtal was absorbing it, which was what led to Xochtal’s demise.
- Despite his ship being captured by Moonquill at the end Ethyl was able to remain conscious by faking being knocked out, having some control left of the situation by knowing what’s going on.
- He tricked Kleriya and Ironwall during a fight into thinking the rest of his allies were inside a house, while they were actually on the run, looking for a ship.
- He pretended to be an omnicidal terrorist who threatened to blow up Solunar Nexus in order to evacuate the star system as quickly as possible by making them panic, thinking that a genuine and serious announcement would be ignored and not taken seriously.
- He gathered protectors to fight against Stormlance, and when genocide was called, he hid them successfully.
- He tricked Stormlance in the climax, making him attack the door to the backup plan, opening it. Ethyl ducked out of his mech and got inside, then locked himself in before Stormlance could get inside. He even dealt with the security system, holding his own against all the guns.
- His death scene is admirable and pretty badass, as he not only managed to take out a security system, but he has the utter dedication to save the universe to the point where he was willing to die for it, as he took overran the ship’s AI by steering it into a star, destroying the backup plan and himself at the same time. He even encourages his teammates to keep going forward.
- He has excellent marksmanship, and is a great gunslinger, who uses strategy and the environment to his advantage.
- He cares about his crew members, despite not wanting a crew at first, and was even willing to die for their safety.
- Despite being an anti hero and an outlaw, Ethyl is a good hearted novakid who cares about others well being and safety, and is willing to save innocent people from danger. In fact, the only reason he steals from people in the first place is because he has no other choice due to being an outlaw.
- In the story, he has done many heroic deeds, such as saving the Solunar Nexus star system from Mika Aikawa, defeating Xochtal Reklaw and sacrificing himself to save the universe.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- He used to work with Desert Tumbler, committing armed robberies and heists with him, just for the thrills. Even after cutting ties with him, he still occasionally scams and cons people out of their pixels.
- His methods of fighting discrimination are pretty extreme, as him shooting everyone who says something discriminatory, while well intentioned, isn’t the most moral way of doing it, and there are honestly better ways of going about it.
- After he sabotaged Moonquill’s ship, he threatened to Moonquill that he would blow up all of her ships with everyone onboard to get her to stop her attack. While it was to stop Moonquill’s attack and to get her to leave her alone, the fact still stands that Ethyl was willing to kill lots of people.
- He caused a lot of panic with his move to evacuate Solunar Nexus. While it was a heroic act at heart to save them from Stormlance, it was still a very reckless and dangerous method of evacuating everyone, as the panicking could have easily resulted in stampedes which could have hurt or killed people.
- He endangered the mayor’s life by leaving him tied up in order to “preserve the scene” that he was a terrorist. Albeit, this is justified as it was done to save billions, and the mayor was being negligent as he refused to believe his genuine warnings.
