~ Evil Morty to Morty Smith after the latter discovers that Rick Sanchez returned to their family for disingenuous reasons. |
Mortimer Chauncey Smith of Dimension 79⊢⊇V, better known by his nickname Evil Morty, is the main antagonist of the Adult Swim animated science-fiction TV series Rick and Morty.
He is a malicious alternate version of Morty Smith, the master of Evil Rick, and the one truly responsible for the deaths of Ricks and abductions of Mortys from other different universes. He managed to escape capture and be elected first President of the Citadel of Ricks following the destruction of the public Council of Ricks. Embittered by every Rick's horrible and toxic behavior, as well as their treatment of all Mortys, he is intent to break through the Central Finite Curve to escape to a reality where Rick is not the smartest man in existence.
He was voiced by the series' co-creator Justin Roiland, until season 7. From season 7 onwards, he is voiced by Harry Belden.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He faked an apology for his disobedience and tricked his Rick into getting intoxicated so he could turn him into a cyborg pawn and use him as a right-hand.
- He broke into the Morty Agency to erase records of his existence and commit crimes without leaving any trace of himself, then killing Ricks to download their brains and increase his intelligence, while kidnapping Mortys and using them to mask him from the Citadel.
- He hacked Rick's portal gun and uploads Evil Rick's portal travel history onto it to frame him for his crimes and get him arrested by the Citadel. When Rick is able to evade capture and track Evil Rick down, he's able to capture them with their mutant crab army. It turns out that Evil Morty had counted on Rick figuring out his hacking of his portal gun and counted on him tracking him down, since he needed to download the contents of his brain to obtain the schematics for the Central Finite Curve. Rick would admit in their second encounter that Evil Morty is the only enemy that successfully hacked his portal gun.
- Pretended to be a pawn to Evil Rick and constructed the Morty Dome to mask his plans to destroy the Central Finite Curve, even fooling Morty Prime into believing he is being coerced by Ricks.
- During their meeting, Evil Morty subtly tried to turn Morty Prime against C-137 Rick.
- When Morty Prime foiled his plans by rousing the other Mortys in rebellion, Evil Morty passed himself off as an ordinary Morty and escaped scot-free, even pinning all blame on Evil Rick.
- He becomes president of the Citadel (despite being looked down on for being a Morty) through manipulating the mass via speeches about corruption of their society, winning everybody over with that and his charisma. He even uses being shot by his fired employee to gain sympathy.
- When the Shadow Council tries to make him their puppet ruler, he singles out the only 2 who don't see him as a pawn and has his guards kill off the rest while leaving the other 2 unharmed, cementing his rule over the Citadel.
- He maintains his good publicity among the Citadel by fulfilling his campaign promises and providing equal rights to Mortys, while secretly transforming the Citadel into a massive portal gun to break through the Central Finite Curve.
- When Rick and Morty arrive on the Citadel, he invites them to dinner and holds their attention long enough to complete the brainscan from his previous encounter with them and gain the last bit of information on how to destroy the Central Finite Curve. He also casually reveals Ricks role in creating the Citadel, and his negligence of the Morty breeding program that they had used to make an endless supply of disposable sidekicks, in order to distract them and turn Morty against Rick.
- When Rick breaks them out of their restraints, he's shown to have been prepared with a forcefield that protects him from all of Rick's shots, remaining casual and unfazed by Rick defeating his guards and seeming to enjoy the spectacle. When Rick learns at the last second that Evil Morty had hacked his portal gun again, he simply congratulates Rick on getting "caught up".
- He hacks the portal guns of the entire Citadel with tainted portal fluid and sends the entire population into a mass panic with a false alarm so that they'd try to escape with their guns, only to be redirected to hazardous and dangerous dimensions that immediately kills them. He also redirects the ones that try to upload themselves into Operation Phoenix clones into ones that get blended up and use their blood to power his portal cannon.
- He succeeds in escaping the Central Finite Curve and reaching a dimension free of Ricks influence, which is treated as a satisfying moment since he no longer has to be subject to abuse by a Rick ever again.
- Despite the multiverse outside the Central Finite Curve being complete and utter chaos, Evil Morty rose above it by constructing a palace which is immune from the multiversal shenanigans, only collecting crystals to power his shield.
- Tricked Rick Prime into thinking he's C-137 Rick's Morty, thus leading to Rick Prime underestimating him and Morty taking him off guard via a surprise attack.
- Seized Rick Prime's Omega Device for himself, and warned Rick and Morty to stop pursuing him, else he would use the Omega Device on Rick. When asked why he hasn't erased him already, Evil Morty informs them that he doesn't want infinite Beths or Summers hunting him across the multiverse for revenge.
- He has been successful in every one of his plans, unlike many other villains.
- While undoubtedly vile in his actions, especially torturing hundreds of Morties, he is prevented from being too much of a baddie as he takes no visible sadism or joy in his actions and mostly just uses them as a pawns for his plans (unlike Rick Prime who kills numerous versions of his family members out of pettiness and sadism) and also has a genuine sympathetic goal of wanting to escape the inevitable abuse Mortys endure from Ricks.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He is a psychopath with no qualms about hurting anybody to achieve his goal, which includes turning his Rick into a cyborg slave, torturing hundreds of Mortys to hide his location, and brutally killing every Rick and Morty on the Citadel, all with no remorse.
Trivia[]
- Evil Morty is the only Rick and Morty character to be Magnificent Baddie.
