Gabriel, also known as the Trickster, is a supporting character in the TV series Supernatural.
He is the fourth and last Archangel created by God, who left Heaven after the conflict between his brothers Michael and Lucifer. He then took on the appearance of Loki and attacked as a trickster-type of enemy for years, his devious schemes often causing him to cross paths with hunters Sam and Dean Winchester.
He was portrayed by Richard Speight Jr.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Due to the conflict between his brothers, he left Heaven and went into hiding on Earth, to the point that nobody, not even his brothers, knew where he was.
- He took on the appearance of Norse God Loki and began acting as the Trickster, playing mischievous and sometimes deadly tricks onto those he felt deserved it, for example a professor who was sleeping with his students.
- When confronted by hunters Sam and Dean Winchester, he summons ridiculous yet deadly obstacles to attack them, and after being stabbed by a wooden stake which would kill the actual Loki, he pretends to be killed and disappears to continue acting as the Trickster.
- After Dean makes a deal to save Sam's life and is given one year to live before his soul will be dragged to Hell, Sam begins looking for a way to save Dean; the Trickster puts Sam into a Groundhog Day loop where Dean always dies and the day resets, in order to teach Sam that will have to learn how to live without Dean. When Sam begs Gabriel to give him a chance to save Dean, he is frustrated due to Sam not learning but ultimately breaks the loop.
- He traps Sam and Dean in a TV show where they have to survive different genres in order to try and find him if they want his help in facing Lucifer. When they surprise him with a wooden stake, he once again pretends to die but keeps them trapped in the TV show world.
- Sam and Dean manages to trap Gabriel in a ring of Holy Fire after realizing he is an angel, at which point he reveals he is Gabriel and that they are the true vessels of Michael and Lucifer. Dean berates Gabriel for being unwilling to stand up to his family, which causes Gabriel to change his mind on staying out of the Apocalypse.
- When the Pagan Gods capture Sam and Dean, Gabriel arrives to try and help them. Lucifer soon arrives as well and begins killing everyone, at which point Gabriel confronts him and buys enough time for Sam, Dean, and the Goddess Kali to escape. Gabriel tells Lucifer he is simply having a temper tantrum for God loving humanity more than him, and attempts to sneak up on Lucifer and kill him, but is quickly overpowered and seemingly killed.
- Gabriel is revealed to have faked his death once again and gone into hiding to live with the Norse God Loki and his sons Fenrir, Sleipnir, and Narfi. They end up betraying him and selling him to the Prince of Hell Asmodeus, who begins torturing Gabriel and extracting his grace. Years later, Gabriel is saved by former British Men of Letters operative Arthur Ketch and brought to Sam and Dean. When Asmodeus comes to re-capture Gabriel, he has replenished enough of his grace and proceeds to obliterate Asmodeus effortlessly.
- Gabriel goes on a revenge quest and kills Loki, Fenrir, Sleipnir, and Narfi for having betrayed and sold him out. After finishing his revenge, he joins Sam and Dean in their quest to save their mother Mary and adoptive son Jack, who is trapped in an alternate universe ruled by a version of Michael known as Apocalypse Michael.
- Alongside the witch Rowena, Gabriel overpowers and captures Lucifer in order procure his grace, which is needed to open the dimension rift to the alternate universe.
- Once confronted by Apocalypse Michael, Gabriel decides to fight him head on to prevent him from going through the dimensional rift, and while he is quickly overpowered and killed by him, this buys enough time to seal the rift and prevent Michael from invading the main universe.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- While he does target people that have committed condemnable acts such as the professor who slept with their students, his actions would still be murder since he's killing them out of vigilantism.
- He attempted to kill Sam and Dean in ridiculous ways during their first appearance, such as summoning a chainsaw killer and two models with super strength to attack them.
- He traps Sam in a Groundhog Day loop where he has to experience Dean dying over and over, while this was done in order to teach him a lesson, it is still a very cruel thing to do.
- When Sam and Dean look for his help in fighting Lucifer, he traps them in his TV world in order to try and wear them down and accept their roles as the vessels of Michael and Lucifer, something that would result in the apocalypse.
