“ | To carve my name in history, for future generations! So that going forward, someone out there... will give a moment's thought to the way I lived, and aspire to it. And this dream is no longer mine alone. Today marks my first step towards true infamy. My dream would be trifling indeed if your words could move me to abandon my course! As you are a U.A. student... I assume you can comprehend... my penchant to dream. | „ |

Danjuro Tobita, also known as the Gentle Criminal or simply Gentle, is a major antagonist from the manga/anime series My Hero Academia. He is an infamous criminal seeking to spread his name across media as the villainous criminal he is today. He serves as the main antagonist of the U.A. Cultural Festival Arc alongside his partner in crime, La Brava.
Tobita was once striving to become an iconic Pro Hero, but after facing tragic rejections and failures, decided to seek fame as a villain instead.
He was voiced by Kōichi Yamadera in the Japanese version, and John Gremillion in the English dubbed version.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a very sympathetic backstory as he wanted to become a hero in U.A but ended up failing the test four times, but despite this, he does not give up. After failing to save a man's life which leads to him getting six months to recover, he ends up getting expelled from school and kicked out of the house by his parents. When he comes across his old classmate who is now a hero, he forgets who he is. Because of this, he ends up becoming a villain named "Gentle Criminal" just so he can survive.
- He always fights with honor when fighting his enemies as he respects Izuku for his skills while fighting him.
- His videos ended up inspiring La Brava who was suffering from depression and decided to work with him. While at first he was mixed about La Brava participating in villainess activities but after seeing her computer skills and hanging out more, he ends up making her a sidekick and decides to color around his eyes using a permanent marker so it could match her eyes.
- He has been committing multiple robberies without getting caught for over six years.
- He easily defeated the heroes when they tried to stop him and didn't take the money from the store.
- He explained to the audience that he does not commit crimes without a reason. For example, the reason he attacked the store was only that they hide the Fluffy Pudding expiration date that was gonna expire today.
- He also punishes people who do not act "gentlemanly", stating himself as just a modern Gentleman thief who never commits violent acts to anyone.
- He is truly disgusted by Stain and the League of Villains for using violence on others to get more attention.
- He plans on infiltrating U.A. High School when the festival starts just so he can get more attention like the other villains.
- In the invasion, he plans on not getting the students involved, and that is the only thing that matters in invading the festival.
- He makes a disguise that Deku doesn't notice or even know who he is to sneak into infiltrating U.A festival only for him to figure out who he is due to the scent of the Golden Tips Imperial Tea and recognizing the voice from watching his video. If Izuku hadn't been there, he easily would have gotten away.
- He praised Deku for figuring out who he was and laid his quirk in front of Deku without using any violence against him.
- While escaping he used his quirk to bounce Deku in the ground for him not to catch him.
- He flawlessly trapped Izuku with a constructive beam by tricking him into thinking he was gonna hurt a civilian. Even if Izuku didn't save him, he would just bounce the beam away without hurting anyone.
- After Izuku catches up to them and uses his air blast on them, he puts up an invisible barrier to prevent it from hitting them and uses his trampoline to attack Izuku from behind him.
- While La Brava does apologize to him if her quirk isn't helping him enough, he tells her that nothing proves that her feelings are not enough for him.
- After getting defeated by Izuku, he realizes that if he allows her to escape without him, she will commit worse crimes than what he has done in the past, so he blames himself for making her an accomplice. He then uses his last strength and his quirk by pushing Izuku in the air, hugging La Brava, and telling Izuku to leave him so La Brava can have a brighter future accepting his defeat.
- He lies to Hound Dog about him brainwashing La Brava and only does this for her to escape punishment, protect her, set up a bright future for her, and put an end to her willingness to commit crimes. Even Deku goes along with genuine respect for his opinion.
- He is one of the few villains to give Izuku a tough fight and hold him off very well.
- Before being taken by the police, he remembers Izuku's words and hopes that his feelings can also reach others.
- When Muscular started a prison break in Mikuzu Prison, Gentle tried to stop the criminals from escaping. When they charged at him, he remembered Gori and Izuku's advice and faced them head-on, resulting in Mikuzu Prison being the only one without escapees, earning the respect of the prison guards.
- After requesting Gori to allow him to reunite with La Brava, he redeemed himself and became the hero he had once wanted to be.
- With La Brava boosting his Quirk, Gentle stopped U.A. from falling so he could repay Izuku for encouraging him to take the right path again.
- He joined Izuku's allies in protecting him from All For One's onslaught of attacks, calling to him with encouragement to do his utmost.
- Despite his villainous past, he was able to turn his life around and become successful, marrying La Brava and forming the company GeL Inc.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- He has committed multiple robberies and filmed them for over six years.
- He attempts to infiltrate U.A when the festival starts just so he can get more attention, which would have gotten it shut down, ruining the fun for everyone, including Eri, who at the time didn’t know how to smile.
Trivia[]
- He, alongside Agent Bishop, Angel Gabby, Buer, Oliver Grayson, Oogway, and Right Back at Ya! Meta Knight are the only Magnificent Baddies to also be Pure Good.
