Grodd, also known as Gorilla Grodd, is a major antagonist in the Arrowverse, serving as a major antagonist in Season 1, a supporting antagonist in Season 3, a minor antagonist in Season 5, and a supporting character in Season 6 of The Flash and a supporting antagonist in Season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow. He is a silver-back gorilla torturously experimented on by the corrupt General Eiling, but gained advanced intelligence and psychic powers following the particle accelerator explosion, proceeding to engage in various criminal plots and ultimately planned to subjugate humanity.
He was voiced by David Sobolov, who also voiced The Annihilator from Mighty Med and Shockwave from Transformers: Prime.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a tragic backstory. He was experimented since birth and tortured by General Eiling and the U.S. army who simply saw him as a tool and a test subject for creating human super soldiers, giving him understandable grievances against humanity.
- He didn’t inherently hate humans and did care about “Harrison Wells” (really Eobard Thawne) and Caitlin Snow, the only humans who ever showed him any kindness during his time in captivity.
- Upon the particle accelerator explosion granting him psychic powers and enhanced strength, he broke out of his cage in S.T.A.R Labs and evade them for years in his secret lair in the sewers.
- He brainwashed General Eiling to attack Central City Gold Reserve to distract Team Flash from Thawne’s plan and deduced they would transport the gold in an ice cream truck disguise and laid a mine as a trap beforehand to ambush them.
- He caught the Barry’s super-sonic punch midair and easily tossed him aside and was able to psychically immobilize him and nearly killed him had it not been for the last-minute intervention of Iris West (who had recently discovered Barry’s identity as the Flash) inspiring Barry over the comms which he couldn’t have seen coming.
- He survived getting hit by a bus and simply came up with another plan, brainwashing scientists to successfully steal serums and kidnapping Caitlin to ask her to create gorillas like him.
- After getting banished to Gorilla City on Earth-2 by Team Flash, he formed a masterful plot to get revenge and return home, sending a complex invitation claiming to be on behalf of Gorilla City to lead Earth-2 Harrison Wells into a trap and capture him to draw in Team Flash and ambush and capture them as well.
- He manipulated Team Flash into thinking Solovar was a war-monger who wanted to invade Earth-1 to trick Barry into defeating Solovar for him and use that to frame Team Flash as war-mongerers and rally the gorillas into unquestionably following him instead.
- He had a backup plan to breach into Earth-1 before he even kidnapped Team Flash, capturing and brainwashing Gyspy and simply used her to open a wormhole to Earth-1 instead when Team Flash escaped and sent her to attack Team Flash to distract them from his plan.
- He scrambled S.T.A.R City satellites to prevent Team Flash from tracking him and his army and when a police perimeter was set up in the area of Central City Team Flash predicted he would start his invasion, he brainwashed Joe West to distract them from his true goal, to kidnap a U.S general to hijack a nuclear facility to nearly destroy Central City with a nuclear missile had Barry not stopped it in the last two seconds and when that was foiled, he simply started his invasion since the perimeter was now gone, showing how he quickly thinks on his feet and takes advantage of every opportunity.
- He easily defeated Flash alongside Kid Flash and Jesse Quick with his army and would have killed them had Cisco and Gypsy not return with Solovar.
- He took advantage of being displaced in 1967 Vietnam to form his own kingdom and using his charisma to convince Anh Ly to follow him and lead his cult, genuinely wanting to bring peace to humanity and stop all their destructive wars they were committing across the globe. He had Anh Ly bring reporters so they could document his kingdom and spread his message to the world to convince humans to join him.
- He ambushed Amaya when she infiltrated his lair and used his psychic powers to get her to destroy her shrink ray and defeat her.
- He nearly redeemed himself after Amaya reasoned with him until the U.S army attacked his kingdom and ordered a Napalm airstrike on him just after seeing him, understandably solidifying his belief that humanity would never stop hunting him.
- He deduced out the Legends were time-travelers and had a time ship, taking advantage of his newfound knowledge to attempt to take over their timeship.
- He evaded the Time Bureau throughout history and ambushed their headquarters to successfully assassinate their leader.
- He used a one-second window caused by the power going out in his A.R.G.U.S cell to get a guard to free him and managed to lay low and evade A.R.G.U.S for over a year.
- He let Team Flash upgrade King Shark’s telepathic crown to steal it after and amplify his own psychic abilities.
- He put up a good fight against Barry, Nora, and King Shark and nearly defeated all of them.
- He summoned enough strength to think intelligently after being placed in a coma by Caitlin and A.R.G.U.S and took advantage of Barry being knocked unconscious to transport him into his mind.
- He convinced Barry that he had genuinely changed, having contemplated all his actions while in prison and recognizing they were wrong and apologizing for all them and defeating the Solovar illusion guardian to escape from the collapsing mindscape and saving both of them, reconciling with his former enemy and being allowed to go back to Gorilla City, the only place where he was happy, redeemed.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He killed two city workers unlucky enough to have stumbled onto his secret lair.
- He brainwashed two scientists into stealing serums for him and killed them afterwards.
- He kidnapped Caitlin to help him create gorillas like him.
- He tricked Barry into defeating Solovar for him to usurp control of Gorilla City and frame Team Flash as warmongers to rally the gorillas to invade Earth-1.
- He brainwashed Gyspy into opening a portal to Earth-1 so he and his army could go to Earth-1 and kidnapped and brainwashed a U.S general to authorize a nuclear missile to destroy Central City and invaded the city after the plot was foiled to destroy it himself instead.
- He brainwashed U.S and Vietnamese soldiers and plotted to assassinate LBJ to instigate WW3 to have the nations of the world destroy each other to rebuild humanity as one nation under him, even if he did have genuine good intentions over it.
- He attempted to steal the Waverider to travel back in time and alter the course of evolution to prevent humanity from ever existing.
- He allied with Damien Darhk to create anachronisms throughout history and brutally assassinated the Time Bureau director.
- He attempted to assassinate a young college attending Barack Obama in the 1970s, even expressing some sadism over it.
- He stole King Shark’s telepathic crown and attempted to brainwash all of humanity.
