“ | The greatest villain was the one you never knew was there in the first place. | „ |
~ Harumi’s most famous quote. |
Harumi, also known as the Quiet One and the Jade Princess, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Pythor P. Chumsworth) of the Ninjago franchise.
She is the princess of Ninjago revealed to be the founder of the Sons of Garmadon, a cult dedicated to reviving Lord Garmadon, believing only he could rule Ninjago and get revenge on the ninja for failing to save her birth parents from the Great Devourer when she was a child. After seemingly dying, she would resurface in the final season as the herald of the Crystal King, the reborn Overlord, with the mission of helping the Overlord destroy the forces of good once and for all to end the conflict between good and evil and achieve peace.
Roles[]
She serves as an unseen character pre-The Oni Trilogy (specifically Season 1: Rise of the Snakes) before appearing as the central antagonist of both The Oni Trilogy and Season 15: Crystalized. She is also a mentioned antagonist in both Season 11: Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu and Season 12: Prime Empire, one of the two unseen overarching antagonists (alongside the Overlord) of Season 13: Master of the Mountain and a background antagonist in Season 14: Seabound.
In The Oni Trilogy, she serves as the main antagonist of Season 8: Sons of Garmadon and one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Jet Jack) of Season 9: Hunted. She also appears as a flashback antagonist in the tie-in comic miniseries Garmadon, and an in-game NPC avatar of her also appears as a minor antagonist in Season 12: Prime Empire.
What Makes Her Magnificent?[]
- She is one of the most sympathetic Ninjago antagonists for a reason. When she was young, her parents sacrificed themselves to save her when the Great Devourer attacked Ninjago City with Lord Garmadon instead of her trusted heroes, the ninja, saving the day and killing the Great Devourer. This tragedy understandably caused her to view Lord Garmadon as worthy of ruling Ninjago and motivated her villainous actions with her loneliness after being adopted into the royal family and missing of her birth parents being played for sympathy within the series.
- She is the charismatic founder of the Sons of Garmadon, a militant street gang dedicated to reviving Lord Garmadon that she grew to become a powerful criminal syndicate, all while feigning an image of benevolence and quietness in public.
- She figured out that the three Oni masks were needed to revive Lord Garmadon as a villain along with the locations of each of the three masks. She also figured out that someone with Oni blood was needed to recover the third mask.
- She secretly constructed the Temple of Resurrection underneath the royal palace in preparation for the ceremony to revive Lord Garmadon.
- She shadowed Misako while she was hunting for Master Wu so Misako could lead her to baby Wu for Harumi to capture them both, planning to use a baby Wu to recover the third Oni mask.
- She orchestrated the successful heist of the first Oni mask at Borg Tower.
- As the Jade Princess, she invited the ninja to the royal palace as an excuse to gain their trust, playing to each of their emotions especially Lloyd. She even pretended to feed the poor and act helpless as a deliberate act to portray herself as a helpless damsel in distress the ninja needed to protect.
- She orchestrated the successful attack on the royal palace by the Sons of Garmadon to recover the second mask and faked "accidentally" losing the mask to the Sons of Garmadon while attempting to escape with Lloyd. She also succeeded in eliminating the royal family, paving the way for Lord Garmadon to eventually become Ninjago's new ruler, whilst securing her place onboard the ninja's ship.
- She prevented the ninja from discovering her true identity by blowing Zane's cover when he infiltrated the Sons of Garmadon.
- After Cole successfully recovered baby Master Wu, she improvised by exploiting the opportunity of Mister E brutally defeating Zane to have Mister E plant a hidden bug within Zane and allow the ninja to find Zane in order to have the bug sabotage the Destiny's Bounty and have them all crash on the island containing the last Oni mask with her and Lloyd being specifically separated from the others to allow her to use Lloyd to search for the Oni temple and recover the final mask via his Oni blood.
- After Lloyd accidentally demonstrated how to activate a trap in the Oni temple, she secretly and purposefully traps herself and Lloyd within the Oni temple to force Lloyd to carry on in finding the final Oni mask and not waver.
- She defeats Lloyd after tricking him into recovering the third Oni mask from the altar and successfully achieves her goal of obtaining all three Oni masks.
- She exploits the ninja finding a crab monster to have the Sons of Garmadon hijack the repaired Destiny's Bounty to escape, capturing Lloyd when he attempted to ambush them.
- She successfully revives an evil incarnation of Lord Garmadon and breaks out of prison with him.
- She takes control of Krypatrium Prison to lure Lloyd into a trap, broadcasting his brutal defeat by Garmadon to the world, causing Ninjago to fall into collapse and Garmadon to unlock his true potential.
- She convinces Garmadon to use his creative power to create a gigantic Colossus to enforce his authority.
- She and Garmadon successfully conquer Ninjago and defeat the ninja in the Season 8 finale.
- She and the Sons of Garmadon successfully hunt down many of the ninja’s allies by the time of the next season.
- Under Garmadon’s rule, she leads several near-villain’s victories against the Resistance.
- Despite her alleged reputation as a bad boss, she tried to convince Garmadon to spare Mr. E’s life, demonstrating some care for her allies.
- She deduced the Resistance’s base was the garbage depot and lead an ambush, capturing nearly every member of the Resistance, forcing the only remaining members: Lloyd, Nya, Darreth, Skylor, and Mystake into hiding.
- She tracks down Lloyd and his remaining allies, but let’s herself be captured by them and learns their plan to impersonate her.
- She breaks out of confinement and exposes Mystake impersonating her to Lord Garmadon, resulting in the death of Mystake and nearly foiling Skylor’s attempt to get Lord Garmadon’s power.
- While she did abandon Garmadon after the ninja took control of the Colossus, it wasn’t cowardly, but for pragmatic reasons as the ninja just wiped the floor with the villain’s forces and were going to Garmadon’s tower to crush them both with Harumi even advising Garmadon to retreat as the wise move. Additionally while she have an undignified moment of somewhat pleading for her life, it is subverted along with the above moment when she ultimately sacrifices her life to save a random family.
- Faced with the clear opportunity to save her own skin or save a random family from suffering the same fate as her, she chooses the latter, sacrificing her own life to get a family out of a collapsing building despite not being able to make it out herself, dying in a major moment of honor.
- After being revived by the Crystal King, she escapes from the collapsed building and goes back to the Oni temple and uses the crystal shard to successfully build a new base.
- Upon discovering the Crystal King was the Overlord, she only agreed to work with him out of genuine good intentions in order to destroy the balance, believing to be the source of suffering and strive, and achieve peace in the dark, thereby becoming somewhat of a extremist.
- She shadows the ninja in secret for years, spying on their activities ever since her alleged death.
- She orchestrates a secret Vengestone black market smuggling operation by procuring Vengestone from the city of Shintaro, serving as the overarching influence of Season 13.
- Unlike King Vangelis, she refused to underestimate the ninja and warned the smug Vangelis not to receive them as visitors, ultimately being proven right when the ninja defeat him.
- After King Vangelis was defeated, she improvised and procured the last Vengeston she needed from low level smugglers, successfully acquiring enough Vengestone to build an entire army for the Overlord.
- Using her Kabuki disguise, she manipulated several of the ninja’s previous villains into joining the Council of the Crystal King to get revenge on them.
- She successfully infiltrates Kryptarium prison using her Kabuki disguise to deliver a taunting message to Lloyd from the Overlord before escaping when he tries to stop her.
- She exposes Lloyd’s disguise as the Mechanic to the rest of the Council of the Crystal King in order to get him defeated before revealing her true identity to him.
- She develops some comedic traits on Crystallized, making her more enjoyable to watch.
- She reveals that she set a trap in the form Alf a swarm of explosive mechanical spiders for the original four ninja, knowing they would look for Lloyd after he disappeared, nearly destroying the ninja if not for an extreme coincidence of them happening to discover an abandoned train built for durability beforehand.
- She orchestrated a successful operation to recover the Weapons of Spinjitzu and destroy the monastery, nearly killing the other main heroes if not for another unlikely coincidence.
- She successfully restores the Overlord to a physical form once more.
- Ultimately, her feelings for Lloyd are revealed to be genuine and she repeatedly attempts to spare his life and convince him to join her.
- She escapes capture from Lloyd and nearly captures him again had the main heroes not arrived in the Destiny’s Bounty.
- As a result of her efforts, the Overlord and the Council of the Crystal King are able to conquer Ninjago and drive the heroes underground.
- She deduces the location of the Resistance’s base in the old newspaper warehouse to begin the final battle between the heroes and villains.
- She ultimately redeems herself after learning that the Overlord was the one who corrupted the Great Devourer and was thereby responsible for her parents death, ruthlessly attacking him and coming the closest to defeating him single-handedly before Lloyd is ultimately able to stop him once and for all with the Golden Ultra Dragon. She then ultimately helps the ninja rebuild the monastery with the people of Ninjago.
What Makes Her a Baddie?[]
- She is heavily implied to have sent a Sons of Garmadon expedition to their deaths in pursuit of the third Oni mask, something she never shows remorse for.
- She murdered the royal family who were also her adoptive parents along with their master at arms, Hutchins.
- She stole all three Oni masks.
- She revived Lord Garmadon to successfully conquer Ninjago after being directly responsible for Garmadon brutally beating and nearly killing Lloyd, causing him to lose his elemental power.
- She restored the Overlord and helped him conquer Ninjago.
