Gabriel Agreste, also known by his supervillain identity Hawk Moth, is the main antagonist of Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie, the animated film adaptation of the French superhero cartoon Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. He is a fashion designer who is also the father of Adrien Agreste and is secretly using the Butterfly Miraculous to transform into Hawk Moth and uses his powers of Akumatization, which transforms civillians with negative emotions into supervillains using corrupted butterflies known as Akumas, in attempt to get the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous and use them to make a wish and revive his deceased wife, Emilie.

In contrast to his show counterpart, upon learning his son Adrien is Cat Noir, he renounces his use of the Butterfly Miraculous and atones for his crimes.

Like his show counterpart, he is voiced by Antoine Tomé in French and by Keith Silverstein in the English dub.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • When Nooroo, the Butterfly Miraculous' Kwami, tells him that only the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous have the power to bring back his wife and that they will only appear when chaos arrives, he decides to akumatize various people, including an assortment of criminals he releases from prison, in order to draw out Ladybug and Cat Noir, the superheroes who hold the Miraculous he seeks.
  • He has a pretty cool villain song where he states he's willing to go to any lengths to bring his beloved wife back as he relishes in the chaos he is causing.
  • Despite constantly facing defeats, he would continue to send out akumatized villains for his enemies to face, each one seemingly being stronger than the last.
  • After his relationship with Adrien takes a turn for the worse as Adrien calls him out for being a neglectful father, he decides to akumatize himself so he can settle things with the heroes himself.
  • His immense power allows him to defeat the heroes with ease, even being successful in taking Ladybug's Miraculous and would have taken Cat Noir's as well, if not for Marinette saving him.
  • Upon learning his son is Cat Noir, he feels immensely guilty for everything he's done and undoes the damage he caused whilst giving up the Butterfly Miraculous, and presumably turns himself in afterwards.
  • In general he comes across as more sympathetic than his show counterpart, being far less abusive and controlling towards Adrien, and actually deciding to renounce villainy at the end of the film.
  • He's also much smarter than his show self, who frequently had moments of being headstrong and impulsive which lead him to make moves that would ultimately be serious blunders.

What Makes Him A Baddie?[]

  • He states he is fine with burning the world whilst losing himself in the process if it meant bringing his wife back.
  • He sends out various akumatize villains to wreak havoc across Paris in attempt to defeat Ladybug and Cat Noir and take their Miraculous.
  • In the finale he is fine with endangering the entirety of Paris as he defeats and almost kills Ladybug and Cat Noir, who are two teenagers and that Adrien who is his own son.
