Herbert "Herb" Overkill is the secondary antagonist of Illumination's 5th full-length feature animated film Minions, a prequel to the Despicable Me franchise. He is the laid-back assistant and husband of Scarlet Overkill who has played a major role in many of her successes that helped her rise to fame as one of the world's greatest supervillains and at first takes a liking to the three Minions, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob when they work for them as their assistants in their schemes but turns on them with her when they've crossed Scarlet and aids her in trying to kill them.
He was voiced by Jon Hamm, who also voiced the in-universe cartoon version of Lord Hater in Wander Over Yonder.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a fun-loving and laid-back persona that boosts his charisma and makes him a rather entertaining character to watch with some lines that one can at least get a chuckle out of.
- He proves himself to be a loving husband, having helped Scarlet out in many of her schemes, giving her love letters when she returns, and frequently flirting with her as she does with him. His love for her gets further emphasized by him freaking out in concern when thinking she got crushed to death by a chandelier.
- As Scarlet's genius tech specialist, he has played a major part in many of her successes, having made many weapons and materials to supply her with for her stunts and thefts designed as solutions to take care of specific situations she might encounter.
- He provides the Minions with technological materials for their mission to steal the crown of London like a Hypno-Hat that can hypnotize anybody, a lava gun that shoots actual lava, and a robotic stretch suit that proves to come in handy and help them pull off their scheme fairly well, even with some slipups, as they were able to hypnotize guards, melting through a wall to get to the room the crown is in, and spinning blades to cut open the vault.
- He makes a well-designed dress for Scarlet on behalf of her coronation that involves a "sweetheart neckline", a high collar and cinched waist to reflect a simpler, more violent time, a blend of taffeta and high-density body armor fully armed and loaded, nuclear potions in vials,
- He and Scarlet manage to take the crown from the queen's head while she was honoring the Minions for their valiant deeds and returning the crown under everyone's noses and manage to get fairly far albeit not too far as they get frozen in their tracks by a young Felonious Gru who takes the crown and takes off with the Minions following him to serve him later.
- Even though he did show fear over being blown up and gets put into multiple slapstick comedy moments, they aren’t undignified as he reacts reasonably to that situation and the slapstick comedy moments only happen towards the end. He is anything but a coward otherwise as he sticks with Scarlet until the very end.
- He happily dances in prison along with Gru and the Minions, showing that he does not bear a grudge against them.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- He's had a major role in Scarlet Overkill performing many stunts and thefts, one of which involves a painting of his favorite soup.
- He abets Scarlet's plan to steal the crown of England and overthrow the queen to rule in her place by supplying Kevin, Stuart, and Bob with technology to be able to do so.
- He attempts to torture Kevin, Stuart, and Bob per Scarlet's wishes, starting off by means of trying to stretch them apart, though he winds up instead making a photo-op of the scenario when it turns out they are unable to feel pain from them.
- He aids Scarlet in trying to kill Stuart and Bob when they are captured by means of explosive dynamite when they have crossed her one too many times.
- He helps Scarlet make one last attempt to steal the crown and get away with it before both of them are frozen by Gru.
