It's beautiful. Smaller than you imagine. I only wanted to make it better. To feel a connection. But you must feel that already. To sacrifice for them...with all their flaws.
~ Hive's last words to Lincoln, complimenting Earth.
Sometimes the world's greatest miracles happen by accident.
~ Hive recalling what Daisy said to him while fighting a Kree Reaper.

Alveus, also known as Hive, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside John Garrett) of the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where he appears as one of the two main antagonists (alongside Grant Ward) of Season 3. His actions (including the indirect foundation of HYDRA) caused most of the events of the series as well as a big part of the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He was a parasitic mind-controlling Inhuman created by the Kree and whose existence inspired the foundation of HYDRA. Returning to Earth after being banished to another planet, he intended on recreating the original Kree experiments so he could transform a portion of the human race into his mind-controlled Primitives and then seize control of the world for the Inhuman race.

He was portrayed by Jason Glover in his original human form, Dillon Casey while possessing Will Daniels, and primarily by Brett Dalton while possessing Grant Ward.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He has somewhat of a tragic backstory. Five millennia ago, he was just a regular Mayan hunter who got captured and subjected to painful experiments by the Kree. After liberating his fellow Inhumans and driving the Kree away from Earth, humanity started a civil war out of sheer paranoia due to his hypnotic powers and then excommunicated him to the planet Maveth, which eventually became a barren wasteland after its entire civilization destroyed itself trying to kill him. All these events kickstarted the creation of HYDRA, purposed with bringing Hive back (which they eventually did).
  • Brett Dalton's uncanny performance is just as great as when he played Ward.
  • He's an extremist, trying to create a utopian paradise for all Inhumans.
  • He's really quite powerful, seducing an army of fellow Inhumans (including Daisy) into doing his bidding by simply holding out his hands to quickly secrete a cloud of dopamine-inducing parasites into their brains.
    • Speaking of which, the show makes it explicitly clear that Hive's brainwashing works more like an addiction to a cult rather than actual mind control, meaning all his Inhuman thralls still have complete control over their actions and choices. He also never abuses them, and even bought a whole town full of luxuries for them.
  • He fearlessly goes toe-to-toe with Lash and a Kree Reaper, showing he's not a coward.
  • As for thinking on his feet, he:
    1. Uses Will Daniels' body to manipulate Ward and Fitz into bringing him close enough to the Monolith portal so he can finally escape Maveth. Even after Fitz burns Will's corpse with a flare, Hive manages to escape Maveth anyway by possessing Ward's now-dead body (thanks to Coulson killing him).
    2. Usurps Gideon Malick as the wealthy leader of HYDRA from right under his very nose, goading him into committing his first hands-on murder before later outing him as a coward to all the other leaders and even his daughter Stephanie.
    3. Has Daisy cause a bunch of confusion as to who killed Gideon at the Playground, after which she steals a Kree Orb and some Terrigen crystals while also jamming the hangar doors half-shut so that none of the planes can chase her.
    4. While surrendering himself to S.H.I.E.L.D. at the missile silo, has Giyera and Hellfire disconnect their much-needed warhead before smuggling what S.H.I.E.L.D. initially assumes is parts to fix the aforementioned hangar door, when it's actually a box of the Absolution Virus which they soon detonate from the outside and thus turn at least 28 agents into Primitives that break Hive out of stasis during lockdown. Because of this, Hive nearly succeeds in his goal by detonating the warhead on the hijacked Zephyr One. And for bonus points, Hive concocts this scheme while being mind-raped.
  • He calmly accepts his untimely demise, lamenting death is the one thing that's eluded him all these years while he and Lincoln sympathize with each other's convictions rather than breaking down or fighting.
  • Overall, despite having a number of gruesome heinous deeds to his name, Hive is definitely a lesser evil compared to other villains in the show. It helps that most of his worst deeds happen either offscreen (even if described in vivid detail) or to people who were far from saints themselves, such as the racist Watchdogs who become Primitives.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He regularly kills humans for survival, either possessing their bodies as a vessel or disassembling their flesh into food.
  • On Maveth, it's implied that he took part in the all-out war that destroyed the planet's civilization long ago, and that he drove Will's three friends insane to the point where two committed suicide and the last one Will killed in self-defense.
  • He sadistically kills Gideon's daughter in front of him, and then later kills Gideon for outliving his usefulness.
  • He kidnaps Dr. Holden Radcliffe to recreate the same Kree experiment that made him who he is today, and in the process accidentally melts some HYDRA leaders who helped bring him back. But to be fair, Hive clearly isn't very happy about that since he seemed to genuinely wanna reward them for what they did for him.
  • He's perfectly fine with draining every last drop of Daisy's blood just to make more of the Absolution Virus.
  • He tries to turn three continents' worth of people into brute Inhuman slaves called Primitives, even succeeding with 33.
  • His brainwashing of Daisy/Quake and Hellfire gives them both existential crises that play huge roles in both seasons 3 and 4.
