“ | As my sweet mother always said: 'Son, if one hostage is good, two are better...and three, well, that's just good business!' | „ |
~ Hondo to one of his men. |
“ | Traitors, scum! I'm so proud...yet so ashamed. Let me warn you, you are not the first laser-sword wielding maniac I've had to deal with, and Hondo Ohnaka survives every time! | „ |
~ Hondo when some of his men betray him to Darth Maul. |
Hondo Ohnaka is a recurring anti-hero from the Star Wars universe, appearing as both ally and enemy in the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels. He was a Weequay pirate who led the Ohnaka Gang on the Outer Rim world of Florrum during the Clone Wars.
He was voiced by Jim Cummings.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He provides a ton of hilarious one-liners thanks to Jim Cummings' performance.
- He has some standards, being a Jedi sympathizer who dislikes the Separatists as they can't be bargained with like reasonable people. He also doesn't like killing people if he doesn't have to, and is usually polite even when he's an enemy to the heroes.
- Not only did he live through the Clone Wars while still being alive and well to this very day, but he also sometimes comes out better off than he was before. Examples are:
- Forcing Darth Maul and Savage Oppress to abandon their gold and riches by firing at them and their ship as they run away.
- Hondo was also the only one who manage to land a shot on one of Maul's cybernetic legs before his lieutenant Jiro shot the leg off.
- Getting paid handsomely by Anakin for delivering weapons to aid in Onderon's war.
- Getting himself a ship and crew while the Rebels steal Y-wings, flying away as they're too busy fighting the Empire to worry about him.
- Forcing Darth Maul and Savage Oppress to abandon their gold and riches by firing at them and their ship as they run away.
- He is a skilled fighter as he manage to slice battle droids with a sword and was skilled with a blaster.
- He also manage to fight Anakin Skywalker with an electorstaff, despite his kowakian monkey-lizard moving the tank to give Hondo an edge. He also manage to fight Ahsoka Tano and Asajj Ventress.
- He kidnaps Count Dooku, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker all in just one episode, hoping they can all go back to being friends after selling them for spice (which likely would've succeeded if Turk Falso didn't betray him). He even thanks the Jedi for letting him go after they escape and use him as a shield.
- While begging Anakin to save him as he's holding onto a clifftop can come off as cowardice, this was simply to distract Anakin as a tank blasts him away so he can call off his men without anyone getting captured.
- In fact, Hondo is anything but cowardly because he usually leads his troops into battle, fights the Jedi with an electrostaff on two separate occasions, and there's a scene where he doesn't even flinch when Maul's ships fire towards him.
- Plus Hondo did technically kept his word of calling off his men.
- He convinces the young Boba Fett to give up Aurra Sing's hostages at Plo Koon's request, saying that it's what his father Jango would've wanted since he was an honorable man.
- He's a pretty good boss for the most part, mercifully welcoming his mutineers back after luring them into a dead-end cave and expressing much care for Melch's safety.
- While his men are most of the time stupid, Hondo cares greatly for them
- He helps Ahsoka Tano and a group of pre-pubescent Padawans find a ship to escape the planet Onderon after it gets conquered by General Grievous, stating that he doesn't like taking children into battle. He even develops a soft spot for Katooni, watching in pure joy as she builds her lightsaber and then going back to save her friends just for her.
- Despite being pained by Anakin to deliver weapons for Ondoran, Hondo did help the Rebels reclaim their home.
- By the time of Rebels, he becomes an anti-hero to aid the Rebellion against the Empire, even personally helping steal Y-wings and proton bombs while also providing a distraction during the liberation of Lothal.
- He also proves time and time again that he cares for Ezra Bridger, not willing to backstab him.
- During the Imperial Era, he fought Chirrut Îmwe, a blind Guardian of the Whills and manage to defeat him.
- He ultimately avoids any long-term punishment and is shown to still be active around the time of the sequel trilogy.
- He also runs a smuggling operations where it often steals from the First Order.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He's a notorious Card-Carrying pirate who'll do almost anything for profit, such as:
- Frequently raiding a nysillin spice farm village on Felucia, and then nearly destroying it when they don't pay up in time.
- Threatening Padawans in an attempt to steal Kyber crystals, and then nearly selling Ahsoka to unknown buyers.
- He antagonized the Rang Clan, causing the clan to place a bounty on his head.
- Ratting out the Rebels and Lasats to the Empire (although to be fair he did warn them about incoming stormtroopers).
- In his debut, he tortures Obi-Wan and Anakin with electricity for trying to escape too many times.
- In the Jedi Younglings arc, it's mentioned that he killed some circus performers offscreen for disappointing him.
