Izanami-no-Okami, or simply Izanami is the overarching antagonist of the Shin Megami Tensei spinoff, Persona 4. She was responsible for the Midnight Channel appearing in Inaba as well as the town's interest in it, as well as granting Tohru Adachi, Taro Namatame and Yu Narukami the ability to awaken Personas, in order to study humanity and grant their inner wish.
She is voiced by Romi Park in Japanese, and Karen Strassman in English.
What Makes Her Magnificent?[]
- She was responsible for the creation of the Midnight Channel, the world of human subconsciousness.
- She also was responsible for the Midnight Channel to appear in the televisions in Inaba, as a window for humanity to find out whom the town was thinking of.
- Intrigued by humanity, she decided to study humanity by using the Midnight Channel.
- She spread various rumors across Inaba in order to hide its true nature as the conduit for humanity's thoughts, which was so successful she herself had to reveal the Midnight Channel's true nature to the Investigation Team after she was found out.
- She took on the disguise of a gas station attendant so that she will not arouse any suspicions from her marks as well as the rest of Inaba.
- She awakened the Personas of Tohru Adachi, Taro Namatame and Yu Narukami after greeting them when they came to Inaba. She then decided to grant the inner wish of the person who affected the town the most.
- Thus, Izanami was directly the cause behind Yu managing to stop Namatame's serial kidnappings as well as stopping Adachi's attempt to turn everyone into Shadows.
- Though Namatame wasn't able to awaken his own Persona, Izanami successfully made use of him by observing the serial kidnappings and the Investigation Team's efforts to stop them.
- Despite having ample opportunity to interfere, she chose to merely observe the outsiders affecting the town via their Personas, only emerging during the rainy days.
- After watching Adachi's manipulations affect the town, she initially judged him to be the winner in her experiment and tried to grant his inner wish.
- After Adachi was defeated, she tried to use Ameno-sagiri in order to fulfill her goals to merge the two worlds.
- Despite the plan getting foiled, she took their defeats in grace and planned to study humanity in another time.
- After getting discovered during Yu's last day in Inaba, she acknowledge the resilience of the Investigation Team and congratulated them for discovering the truth regarding her.
- Her battle with the Investigation Team was mostly in her favor, she only was defeated in the very end due to Yu gaining power from the Social Links as well as Izanagi being transformed into Izanagi-no-Okami, something she couldn't predict.
- Her disguise and plans were so well-done, no one even suspected her of being the mastermind. If Nanako didn't remember Yu's interactions with her in April, itself being triggered by Adachi's letter which Izanami couldn't predict, she would have completely gotten away with everything in the end.
- Her plans result in her learning about humanity and granting their wish, no matter who among Adachi, Namatame or Yu won in the end.
What Makes Her a Baddie?[]
- She was the whole reason Adachi was even able to kill Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi, which he couldn't have been able to do if she didn't grant him the ability to awaken his Persona.
- As a result, she was also indirectly behind Namatame's attempt to "save" the people appearing in Midnight Channel, leading to him kidnapping multiple people, including a small child which put them at risk of being killed by Shadows.
- She decided to turn the whole world into Shadows, which will turn them into empty husks only able to exhibit negative emotions, believing it's what humanity truly wants deep down.
- Tried to kill the Investigation Team after she was discovered as the true instigator of the events in the game.
Trivia[]
- Izanami is the only Magnificent Baddie to come from Persona 4.
- Both of her voice actors, Romi Park and Karen Strassman have also voiced other characters in Persona 4, Naoto Shirogane for the former and Nanako Dojima for the latter.
