A man pays his debts. A man owes three. The Red God takes what is his, lovely girl. And only death may pay for life. You saved me and the two I was with. You stole three deaths from the red God. We have to give them back. Speak three names, and a man will do the rest.
~ Jaqen H'ghar to Arya after finding her in Harrenhal.

Jaqen H'ghar is a recurring character in HBO's Game of Thrones.

He is a skilled assassin from Braavos who serves the God of Death as a faceless man. At some point, he gets arrested in Westeros and is put in the dungeons of King's Landing. He eventually gets recruited to join the Night's Watch, although his camp is captured before they make it there.

He is portrayed by Tom Wlaschiha.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He is very polite, which is demonstrated even in his very first scene when he apologizes for Rorge and Biter's lack of manners. Even when Arya blackmails him with his own name, he remains calm and collected.
  • He is honorable, as he was fully intent on repaying Arya for saving his life. Even when Arya blackmails him with his own name, he does not back out on his word.
  • He has exceptional capabilities and is able to act quickly. Within a few minutes of being asked, he kills Amory Lorch, a Lannister knight, on Lannister territory without getting caught. His capabilities are further demonstrated when Arya blackmails him into helping her and her friends escape from the Lannisters, which he pulls this off by killing many Lannister guards and making them appear alive.
  • Arya is impressed with him to the point where she potrays Sandor Clagane, another impressive killer, as a mere kitten compared to him.
  • He provides Arya with extensive training while she's in Braavos.
  • When The Waif wanted to kill Arya for trying to break the contract of the faceless men to kill for a client who paid the price, Jaqen told her "No Pain". If The Waif had followed this instruction, she may have lived.
  • When Arya defeats and kills The Waif, he recognizes this as the will of the many-faced God. The Waif developed a personal spite for Arya, which goes against the principles of the faceless men.
  • When Arya threatened him over The Waif's actions, he showed no fear. He only congratulated Arya on her victory, and even positioned his body directly in front of the sword.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He punishes Arya for killing Meryn Trant, a vile man. This cements that he doesn't believe in killing as a heroic act to punish evil, but rather as a means to serve the Many-Faced God.
  • He and the faceless men are willing to accept any killing contract if the client is willing to pay the price, as he took on a contract to kill Lady Crane, an innocent actress who simply happened to be more talented than her rival.
