Jiaying (in Mandarin: 佳穎) is the secondary antagonist of the TV series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., serving as one of the two main antagonists (alongside Daniel Whitehall) of Season 2 and a minor character in Season 7.
She is the leader of the Inhumans from the Afterlife, Daisy "Skye" Johnson's biological mother and Calvin L. Johnson's estranged ex-wife. Her abilities include regeneration and semi-immortality, but it requires for her to drain the life-force from other people. Due to her traumatic experience with Whitehall, she goes on a vendetta to wipe out humans and install the Inhumans as the dominant species. She is also later revealed to be Kora's mother, Daisy's older half-sister.
She was portrayed by Dichen Lachman.
What Makes Her Magnificent?[]
- She has a tragic backstory of being torturously vivisected by Daniel Whitehall for her immortality. Despite being resurrected soon afterwards, her PTSD gave her a genocidal hatred of humanity, making her motives very understandable. Cal even tearfully states that she once did have a good heart; it was just torn out.
- She's the leader of Afterlife, a Chinese village which acts as a hidden sanctuary for her fellow Inhumans, indicating that she has a fair amount of political savvy.
- She's spent nearly three whole decades manipulating Cal to do her dirty work. It's even implied that she divorced him not because he was becoming a ruthless monster, but rather to use his desire to put their family back together in (ultimately false) hopes that he'll kill Whitehall and bring Daisy to Afterlife like he promised years ago.
- She manages to woo Daisy for a short time, playing off mankind's xenophobia towards Inhumans. Daisy only defects after Raina purposely gets herself killed by Jiaying, which the latter realistically couldn't possibly have foreseen Daisy witnessing.
- In order to start war against S.H.I.E.L.D., Jiaying kills Agent Gonzales and then shoots herself in the shoulder to make it look like he did it. She also has Gordon hijack a Quinet, framing S.H.I.E.L.D. for firing upon Afterlife.
- She takes over an entire S.H.I.E.L.D. battleship called Iliad, capturing or killing the entire crew in such short time, while also using a drugged-up Cal as a trojan horse distraction for Team Coulson. Her plan there is sending out a distress beacon to as many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as possible to petrify everyone onboard with Terrigen Mist in the vents, which would've succeeded if not for Mack, Fitz and Coulson, the last of whom loses his left hand in order to stop it.
- Overall, while she's certainly heinous enough by the show's standards, she lacks Daniel Whitehall's sadism or John Garrett's god complex, ultimately preventing her from being too vile. She's also an extremist who wants to give her fellow Inhumans a better world to live in (even if it's at least partly motivated by hate towards her butcher).
What Makes Her a Baddie?[]
- Despite having a sympathetic motive, she still tries to wipe out the human race.
- She's basically a living Fountain of Youth, completely draining people's life energy to take their years as her own.
- She's a hypocrite willing to kill other Inhumans if it means getting closer to her goal, like when she orchestrates a false flag attack on Afterlife, and then later murders Raina to tie up loose ends.
- She eventually tries to kill Daisy, her own daughter.
- Her actions ultimately result in Coulson losing his hand, Cal having to wipe his own memory, and the Terrigen Crystals contaminating the water supply, thus turning Andrew Garner into the Inhuman serial killer Lash.

- So far, she, Grant Ward and Hive are the only certified Magnificent Baddies to originate from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
