~ Kars |
Kars is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Diavolo) of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, serving as the main antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency. Being the leader of his band of Pillar Men, he is also the creator of the Stone Masks and the cause of Dio Brando's rise as the main antagonist of the series, making him the catalyst of the whole series.
He was voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue in Japanese and John DeMita in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Despite being Near Pure Evil, he isn't too bad or vile for multiple reasons. To start, he only stands out due to his high body count from killing humans and is never too disgusting with his murders like many of the more sadistic villains who outright torture or even rape their victims. Even then, Kars' actions are somewhat to be expected for a vampire and not nearly as disturbing as Dio who forced a mother to eat her infant baby. He also doesn't take very much sadism in his kills (even less so than Esidisi, who could count as well), viewing them more as a means to an end for his goals. It also helps that unlike most other main antagonists, he actually has redeeming qualities (albeit many vague ones; he has one definite one he never subverts.)
- Like other Pillar Men, he has a sexy muscular design and magnificent theme whenever he appears.
- While not a redeeming quality or excuse, he started out as an extremist with a somewhat tragic backstory of being trapped underground, which led to him wanting him and his race to be able to conquer the Sun or in other terms be able to traverse the world during daylight, only for them to turn on him.
- He initially seems to care about nature and animals, only subverting this when becoming the Ultimate Life Form. This is evident when he rescues a dog (which makes him one of the few villains in the series to actually save a dog, where it is infamous for having the villains kill dogs to make them Hate Sinks or at least somewhat despicable) and avoids hitting a flower.
- Even among other Pillar Men, he is stated to have been far more talented and genius then his fellow clansmen. He was even able to successfully wipe them out with the help of only Esidisi.
- He invented the Stone Mask as a way to be able to conquer the Sun for a vampire.
- Compared to Dio Brando, he has some limited sense of dignity as unlike Dio, who first used the Stone Mask on a random civilian to test it; Kars used it on himself instead to test its powers, showing he is willing to face the dangerous risk of it rather than force someone else.
- He is able to hide how utterly insane he is by putting on a calm and serious façade, leading to the reveal of his power-hungry and treacherous nature coming as a surprise. This is especially evident when he kills some of his underlings for trying to attack Lisa, in order to give off the illusion that he wants a fair fight.
- He is quickly able to learn Hamon and its true nature after becoming the Ultimate Lifeform, even becoming the greatest Hamon master in the world.
- While he's dismissive and rude toward most of his underlings, he is respectful and affable toward his two henchmen on multiple occasions:
- He apologizes to Wamuu for stepping in his shadow, even after he cut his arm off out of instinct.
- He wishes to avenge Esidisi after he is killed by Joseph.
- Despite betraying his wishes of having a fair fight, he never subverts his respect for Wamuu as a great warrior.
- He displays incredible battle smarts and tactics on multiple occasions:
- He rescues a dog from being ran over by drunk drivers, precisely slicing off the driver's arm inside the car to make him miss and crash into a wall.
- He uses his heat sensory abilities to detect how many people are inside a room then precisely stabs them through the walls. While he ended up missing Von Stroheim, this is because he was a cyborg with no body temperature.
- He uses his bone blade to avoid hitting a flower after falling into a canyon by launching himself off the ground.
- He is able to decapitate several of his cowardly henchmen so fast it can't be seen, even saying "they're already dead" before they collapse dead.
- He tricks Lisa into thinking he will face him in a one-on-one by using a body double to fight her then sneaking up to stab her through the heart via phasing through the wall behind her.
- He uses a tied-up Lisa as a hostage against Joseph to gain leverage against him and kill him.
- While this could be seen as rather cowardly and is pointed out to be so by Joseph and multiple others, he essentially admits that he only cares about achieving his goals. It also helps that he is essentially using a dirty trick against Joseph, a known dirty trickster himself who would likely cheat in a fight anyway, preventing him from being too unfair.
- He somehow manages to grab the Red Stone without anybody noticing then tricks Von Stroheim and his soldiers into firing their lights at him, allowing him to gain Godlike powers.
- He transformed his hand into a vampiric squirrel he used to seduce and infect another squirrel, then have them both attack Joseph and his group.
- He morphs some of his feathers into bulletproof armored scales that he can launch.
- He uses a rain of piranhas to tear away at Joseph's plane while chasing him.
- He surrounds his skin with crab armor and a layer of bubbles to avoid dying when falling into a volcano.
- While his defeat of being turned into a statue is played for some satisfaction (contrasting the other two Pillar Men who had sympathetic deaths), it is not too undignified as he was admittedly defeated purely by accident from the volcano eruption (which Joseph internally admits he didn't see coming and Kars could not have predicted.) Even then, multiple villains suffer far more humiliating defeats. If anything, he ironically succeeded in gaining the immortality he always wanted.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He committed genocide against his own race, including his parents, allowing him to easily pass the moral event horizon.
- He killed thousands of people over the millennia, including children, much to Wamuu’s dismay.
- While he has a comedic moment where he plays Lisa Lisa’s legs like a guitar, this is less played for him being goofy and more to mock Joseph, which doesn’t add to his magnificence. In short, this comedic moment was just him being a cocky jerk.
- He uses the Red Stone of Aja to try to take over the world, and would have succeeded if not for Joseph launching him into space.
- He shows zero respect for Wamuu's sense of honor as he believed him to be unfit to be a warrior because of it.
- He cheats in his duel between Lisa Lisa by using a body double and fatally attacking her from behind, dishonoring the duel and the memory of Wamuu.
