The self-styled king of the amazingly peaceful Dream Land. He continually does things unbecoming a king, like stealing the kingdom's food supplies or all the stars from the sky. He's not all bad, though, and sometimes performs good deeds. While he and Kirby often battle, they've been known to compete good-naturedly at speed-eating contests and minigames.
~ The description of King Dedede's trophy.

King Dedede is the deuteragonist of the Kirby franchise as well as a playable character in the Beat-em Up crossover videogame series Super Smash Bros., appearing as a major protagonist of Super Smash Bros. Brawl's story mode, Subspace Emissary.

The ruler of the Waddle Dees and Kirby's archrival, King Dedede begins his role in the plot helping in the off-screen hostile takeover of Meta Knight's Halberd on behalf of Master Hand. On the stolen warship, Dedede would come to realize that the design he and the other villains have been a part of was never Master Hand's, as he has been literally puppeteer all along by Tabuu, a being from Subspace who plans to destroy the Trophy World and make it one with his home realm.

Defecting from Subspace Army, Dedede set off with his subjects to obtain as many heroes as possible through trickery and sheer strength and somehow put a wrench in the true enemy's catastrophic plans.

His soundclips were provided by series creator Masahiro Sakurai.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He is a tanky character to play as who can effectively turn winning defense strategies into powerful offensive in the hands of the right player.
  • He is far more no-nonsense than the petty manchild he is in the original series, and clearly has none of his original stupidity.
  • He is clearly just as affable as in the original games, if not more, politely dusting the hero trophies in his possession, merrily patting Luigi and Ness when his plan succeeded and they revive him and, in a particularly heartwarming scene, jump-hugging and petting his newly-revived rival, Kirby.
  • He assisted the Subspace Army's hostile takeover of the Halberd, but, unlike the rest of them, came to know that their supposed leader, Master Hand, was being controlled by the external enemy Tabuu who planned to make the Trophy World one with his realm of Subspace through bombs. Learning also of Tabuu's horrific ability of Off-Waves, Dedede defected from the Subspace army and set off to find a way around Tabuu's power and foil his evil scheme.
  • He ambushed Luigi, who was sacredly distracted by Waddle Dees, and struck him with his hammer, one-shotting him into a trophy.
  • He then used Luigi's trophy to lure the greedy Wario, who was then ambushed and overwhelmed by a horde of Dedede's Waddle Dees, while the king stole Wario's vehicle and the trophies the mustached villain had already snatched: Ness and either Princess Peach or Princess Zelda.
  • He used Wario's vehicle to abduct either Mario and Pit or Link and Yoshi, but when Kirby freed and revived the duo and partially damaged the vehicle, King Dedede kept his priorities straight and, instead of fighting the heroes and potentially lose his remaining trophies, he drove off past the heroes with Luigi, Ness and the Princess and fled to his castle.
  • He placed automatic revival badges on the trophies he abducted so that, when Tabuu eventually used his Off-Wave to one-shot all the heroes who confronted him, at least a couple heroes would be revived and be able to face him.
  • While Princess Peach/Zelda was abducted by Bowser, who had ambushed Dedede, partially destroyed his castle and knocked him out, Luigi and Ness were left behind and eventually revived by the badges, after which they also brought back Dedede who, elated to see his plan come to fruition, led them to Subspace so they could confront Tabuu together.
  • Kirby had swallowed one of the badges earlier, allowing him to revive automatically and then revive the heroes Tabuu had knocked out.
  • He revived Bowser, who had been betrayed and trophyfied by Ganondorf, but fought him when the Koopa King attacked him. Having established his strength and defeated Bowser, Dedede revived him again, literally smacked sense into him when the dragon wanted to fight again and got him to focus on the real threat at hand.
  • His sillier moments, such as not finding a badge before unamusedly realizing it was on him or goofily falling unconscious when his castle collapses in on him, make him charming and funny rather than outright pathetic.
  • In the end, he was the main player in the heroes being able to defeat Tabuu together and save the universe.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He started off as an assistant of "Master Hand"'s, helping in the hostile takeover of the Halberd before he found out the masterplan that was really at play.
  • He built up his backup team through underhanded methods such as:
    • Turning Luigi into a trophy by sneaking up behind him and assaulting him with a powerful hammer attack that instantly turned him into a trophy.
    • He stole Wario's vehicle (which he admittedly deserved, being a greedy straight-up villain in the game), along with Ness and either Princess Peach or Zelda, whom Wario had already made into trophies and abducted.
    • He tried to abduct either Mario and Pit or Link and Yoshi after they had lost a 2v2 fight.
  • His trophy description does state this version is still a greedy tyrant and a thief, of both food and stars.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only version of King Dedede to be a Magnificent Baddie. This is particularly surprising as Dedede, while always charming, is usually also a dimwit and a petty bully of a tyrant.
  • King Dedede landed in the number 1 spot in a poll made for what character should be included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
