“ | Good evening, my loyal subjects. I stand before you today to announce that in just one day's time, the nations have put aside their differences and united, under my command. You were made to be ruled. So I have come to fulfill - your destiny. | „ |
~ Loki's speech to the world inside the United Nations' building, conquering the world. |
King Loki Laufeyson of Asgard is a supporting character in Season 1 of the What If? series. He is the adoptive son of Odin, who took him as a bargaining chip for his father, Laufey. When said peace failed, Loki became the Crown Prince of Asgard when his adoptive brother, Thor, was killed by Yellowjacket, which Loki saw as a sign of war. He then seeked to avenge his brother's death and made a deal with Nick Fury to capture the murderer. But after Thor's murderer was captured, Loki refused to leave Earth and decided to conquer the planet.
Like his original version, he was voiced by Tom Hiddleston.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Unlike the original Loki, who gets frequently defeated in extremely humiliating ways later on, this version of Loki proved to not only remain competent, but also ended up succeeding in his goals to conquer Earth and avenge his brother's death by Thanos.
- Much like his original counterpart, he deeply cared for his adoptive brother, Thor, going to Earth (Midgard) to avenge his death.
- Upon hearing Yellowjacket expressing doubts over Thor's identity, Loki was noticeably hurt and disgusted by Yellowjacket murdering him not because he was an Avengers candidate, but because he could.
- Loki willingly allied with Fury to capture the man that killed Thor. After Fury figures out his identity and informs Loki, Loki puts an effective disguise of Fury that completely fools Yellowjacket, who easily drove the murderer to rant about his motives.
- When disguised as Fury, Loki has some hilariously savage lines. One of his best examples provokes Yellowjacket to attack him, taunting "You are supposed to be a killer? Come on there, kill me."
- He effortlessly defeats Yellowjacket, the very person that killed Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Black Widow, without most of them knowing about it, even effectively using his status as a trickster god as an advantage.
- Using the environment he is in, with most of Earth's defenders now dead, Loki manages to conquer the entire planet in just a single day.
- Despite Captain America and Captain Marvel on SHIELD's side, Loki's forces were actually the ones winning the battle in the finale, nearly defeating Fury, who only was defeated thanks to Black Widow interfering via the Watcher, something Loki could not have expected.
- While he may have been Too Vile at first, he has since subverted his desire to destroy Midgard.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Upon arriving to Earth, he kills most of the SHIELD agents sent to confront him and his army.
- Threatens to reduce Earth to ice and dust if Fury fails to apprehend Thor's killer.
- Turns the Earth's governments into a regime, having complete control over Earth.
Trivia[]
- So far, he, Prince Killmonger, and Justin Hammer are the only characters from What If...? to be Magnificent Baddies.
