~ Stormlance’s vow to control the universe to stop chaos and evil. |
King Stormlance is the main antagonist of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy. He serves as the overarching antagonist of Starbound: The Black Nebula and Starbound: Rise of the Stargazers, and the main antagonist of Starbound: The Glitch Empire. He is the powerful king of The Glitch Empire, who wants to take over the universe and remake it into a completely peaceful world, so no harm can ever be done. While his goal is well intended, he’ll go to extreme lengths to get to that goal, to the point of being willing to destroy everything that wasn’t his territory at the end of the story, due to being unable to conquer everything. He is Moonquill’s adopted father.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Unlike the other main villains of the trilogy, Stormlance is more affable and humble, even towards his enemies. He also acts out of genuine good intentions, and understands the flaws of his actions, while the other main villains merely dismiss the fact they could possibly be wrong.
- He is very tragic and sympathetic. He once lived a peaceful life as the prince while he was stuck in the simulation, until glitch anarchists who gained self awareness rioted violently and ended up destroying his entire kingdom, including killing his father, wife and his son, who was only a child. Stormlance managed to flee, and found a spaceship. He gained self awareness and explored the universe, but only saw destruction. When he finally found somewhere peaceful, he was discriminated against for being a glitch. All of these tragic events led to Stormlance finally snapping and turning into a conqueror, wanting to take over the universe to bring his idea of peace.
- He is a well intentioned extremist without a trace of selfishness in his actions. He wants to take over the universe and control everything to get rid of conflict and all evil in the universe. He believes freedom to be a curse, thinking it does nothing but harm. His memory wiping was also with the main purpose of erasing all negative intentions and any knowledge or memory of evil. Even when he tries to destroy most of the universe, it’s a last resort that he does to limit the amount of people he has to control, and to achieve peace quicker. Not to mention, he was very hesitant to do it.
- He sincerely regrets being genocidal against certain races in the past.
- He has clear standards he won’t cross. For example, he never tortures anyone, and he only kills when he thinks it’s necessary. He is also disgusted at Kleriya’s treatment of her daughter, and gets extremely angry when Kleriya assaults Moonquill.
- He learned how to pilot a ship pretty quickly after becoming self aware.
- He learned how to revive and reprogram dead glitch on his own, reviving a dead glitch into his royal guard, Ironwall, and then proceeding to reprogram billions of glitch flawlessly. He even learns how to do this to non glitch, having wiped billions of memories clean, and implanted them with new ones as if they were always like that. If any of them break out of their new programming and become self aware, he’ll brush it off as a plague and get them executed to cover his tracks, with some exceptions, if they help him with his conquering.
- He and Ironwall took over an entire kingdom on their own, killing the royal family and then reprogramming the citizens memories in one night into thinking he was always the king, which ended up growing into his very large and successful empire.
- He gaslighted and raised Moonquill into thinking like him, but made sure to hide his worst actions, such as killing people to cut down resources, to make sure that she doesn’t become corrupt. Considering Moonquill grew up to be a magnificent baddie herself, it shows how well Stormlance raised her.
- He controls his planets daily, having an entire room dedicated to pulling clones like strings to make sure everything is peaceful as he wants it to be. He even treats the citizens very well.
- He is an excellent conqueror, plotting the invasions for months before pulling them off successfully, and making it seem like nothing has changed. He also has dozens of star systems under his control, which he manipulates perfectly. He even manages to hide the invasions from the wider public, so other star systems won’t go after him or suspect anything.
- He is aware that some of his actions are immoral, but he believes that it’s a necessary evil that has to be done, and shows no enjoyment in his actions.
- Even after she betrayed him, he still cared about Moonquill a lot, and was shown to be hesitant to fight her, and regretted almost killing her. He was also genuinely upset when she betrayed him, and was upset at how he went wrong with her.
- He genuinely respects the Black Nebula and Azima’s Crew, knowing that they were good people, and wanting them to join him or live in his simulation peacefully.
- In his final moments, Stormlance ends up feeling intense remorse for everything he had done, finally realising how wrong his actions was. He orders Moonquill to execute him for his crimes and become the new monarch, wanting Moonquill to try and fix what he had done, knowing she would be a better ruler then him.
- While he does have a breakdown, he recovers from it quickly, managing to calm himself down and not repeat it.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- He used the Asuterosaberu DX on the Glitch Liberator, intending to kill him out of revenge , but thanks to the sword’s special ability, he tore an astral tear, wounding the Glitch Liberator before sending him in the sword’s pocket dimension, leaving him to waste away until natural causes kicked in. While Stormlance didn’t know that would happen, he still thought he deserved it and showed no remorse. Albeit, it was justified as the Glitch Liberator caused the deaths of his family and kingdom. It’s even implied that he’s used the sword’s Astral Tear ability to send people into the pocket dimension to waste away until they died of starvation.
- He conquered over 15 star systems, and even more planets, by wiping all of their memories and inserting randomly generated new ones in place (sometimes even changing their personalities), all to make them more “peaceful” by removing certain things, and so that they would think that he was their king. This is even treated as murder, as the heroes state that it’s essentially killing people and putting new one’s into their bodies. It’s even worse considering that the process is irreversible.
- When conquering planets, he would often kill about 20% of their population to conserve resources. What’s worse is that nobody would ever have any memory of them due to the memory wipes.
- He killed countless rebels who gained free will.
- He was originally genocidal against more chaotic races, such as florans and novakids, although he now regrets this and subverted it long ago.
- He had Moonquill capture both the Black Nebula and Azima’s Crew.
- He hired Kleriya Offentus, despite how horrible of a person she is. However, he didn’t like her that much and did eventually intend to get rid of her.
- He tried to corrupt both crews into joining him, and when they refused, he tried to have them pushed into an astral tear. When they escaped, he sent Moonquill, Kleriya and Ironwall after them.
- He invaded Solunar Nexus, conquering about half of the star system (it would have been more if not for the evacuations), and having some killed, but hiding it from Moonquill by not killing anyone on the first planetHe captured Katsu, Kumiko and Lexie himself.
- Once he captured Tatasia, Azima, Ludvig, Katsu, Kumiko, Lexie and Zaura, he made a threat to them that in 24 hours, he would execute them, and that if they didn’t tell them real information about the others whereabouts, he would kill everyone close to them.
- He tried to electrocute Moonquill when she spoke out against him and fled.
- He accepted Ironwall’s idea of committing genocide on all protectors.
- He made a threat to the New Protectorate that if they didn’t turn themselves into him by the end of the year, he would start detonating star systems with his backup plan.
- When he realised that he couldn’t take over the universe, he launched the backup plan, a ship with an AI that was programmed to destroy every star system that he was yet to conquer, which was essentially an act of attempted mass omnicide, as he would have destroyed most life in the universe.
- He tried to kill the protectors when they tried to stop the Backup Plan.
Trivia[]
