“ | A certain scripture mentions that humans are superior to angels. Why? Because there are people who know of evil, but do not become evil. It's different from angels, who know only of good since birth. Humans have evil, but can live as good, so they are superior to angels, who know only good. | „ |
~ Kirei Kotomine |
Kirei Kotomine is the main antagonist of the Fate franchise.
He was an Executor for the church and a Magnus. He was also a master in the 4th Holy Grail war. In the 5th Holy Grail war, he was the overseer meant to be impartial but was secretly a master in that war as well so that he could manipulate the events of the war and who gets the Grail. He is the arch-nemesis of Kiritsugu Emiya and Shirou Emiya.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
Background[]
- Despite his evil nature, he is incredibly charismatic and affable. This also does not fade during his villain moments as he maintains this trait, especially with Shirou.
- While he does enjoy suffering, it is only because it is the only way he can feel pleasure and feels conflicted about it and does not engage in pointless cruelty.
- He is genuinely tragic as he was born with a flaw that he could only enjoy the suffering of others and spent most of his life fighting his evil nature and attempting to become a normal person. He married a woman and had a child, but even this couldn’t fix him, so he planned on ending his own life. He did not go through with it due to his wife killing herself in front of him to prove he did care for her. Despite wanting to kill her himself, he did not take his own life and thinks about her often wondering if he actually did love her, and her death clearly still affects him as he told Shirou not to let someone he cares about die in front of him.
- He is a skilled Executor who hunts down magi for the church and was considered first class.
- Due to his self torture, he possesses superhuman strength, being able to uproot trees and jump ten meters in the air.
- Surprisingly, he is actually a good priest and will offer genuine advice that is beneficial to the listener.
Fate/Zero[]
- He is a skilled strategist during battle able to predict killing intent even being able to doggie bullets before they are fired by predicting his opponent's move. This also allowed him to keep up with Kiritsugu who could speed up his speed.
- He created his own fighting technique Super Bajiquan which combines both magecraft and Bajiquan which allows him to reach his opponents quickly, send his opponents flying with a single hit, and even block attack while blinded based of pure instinct.
- He is skilled at Spiritual healing, allowing him to heal others with his magical abilities.
- After realizing that Saber's master is not Irisviel, he tried attacking her and her allies to draw Kiritsugu out.
- Used an aspect of Assassin to fool the other Masters that Kirei is out of the count, so that he and Tokiomi can take them by surprise.
- Saved Kariya Matou in order to use him as a pawn.
- He convinced Gilgamesh (who is hard to please or convince) to help him betray his master after telling him the truth about the Holy Grail War and to take him as his Master.
- He framed Kariya Matou as Tokiomi's killer without drawing any suspicions to himself.
- Tricked Kariya and Berserker into fighting Saber so that he could fight Kiritsugu without her interference.
- He fought the Mage killer Kiritsugu to a standstill.
- After Kiritsugu's breakdown seeing the Fuyuki Fire burning down everything, Kirei showed pity at him and let him live.
Fate/stay Night[]
- He pretended to be an impartial overseer of the 5th Holy Grail War when actuality he has two servants (one which he stole) and was controlling the war from behind the scenes.
- In the Fate Route, he successfully hides his true nature from everyone and kidnaps Illya and defeats Rin while planning to use Illya as a vessel for the grail.
- Upon being defeated in the Fate route, he calmly accepts his defeat, stating that he had become weak.
- In UBW, he has Shinji borrow Gilgamesh to throw suspicion off himself and fakes his own death after surviving Casters' attacks.
- In UBW, while he is defeated once again, is calm during his defeat and shows little emotion.
- In Heavens Feel route, he plans on having Sakura birth Angra Mainyu partially because he believes it is wrong to deny the birth of something that wants to exist and he wants to acknowledge if something like him was a mistake.
- He manipulates Sakura into becoming susceptible to Angra Mainyu by telling her to listen in on his conversation with Rin and Shirou where she hears them argue over whether to kill her or not, which further corrupts her.
- He legitimately hates Zouken for being a sadistic monster by choice (unlike him who had no choice) and is disgusted how evil he is.
- He saves Shirou and Rin’s lives and teams up with Shirou to save Illya.
- He fights True Assassin and Zouken one on one and manages to take him off guard by tricking him into using his noble Phantasm, which steals hearts (Kirei doesn’t have a heart) and it does nothing to Kirei, allowing him to use his Black Keys to pin Assassin to a tree, jump ten meters in the air, grab Zouken and exorcise him with Kyrie Eleison.
- He survives having his artificial heart crushed by Dark Sakura and managed to make his way to Angra Mainyu before anyone else.
- Him and Shirou come to an understanding before their fight where there is mutual respect for the other as they are similar in a way.
- He manages to dominate his fight with Shirou despite his opponent being made out of swords, which resulted in him hurting his body every time he punched him.
- He accepts his defeat and declares Shirou the winner of their fight and the 5th Holy Grail War and tells him to go fulfill his wish even smiling when he hears that Shirou will trample over Kirei’s own wish, implying that he is satisfied with Shirou winning in the end.
- Unlike most other Fate villains, Kirei stands out for being portrayed more sympathetically and consistently as cool and intelligent (unlike other villains like Zouken and Gilgamesh who constantly screw their own plans over) and unlike other Fate villains like Zouken and Gilgamesh (who engage in pointless torture and are rapists), he is not too much of a baddie as he commits crimes to fulfill is goal, which is more overshadowed by how magnificent he is.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He killed his own teacher, Tokiomi Tohsaka, to claim his servant for himself.
- He mentally broke Kariya by setting him up as the murderer of Tokiomi in front of Aoi, with him and Gilgamesh watch for sadistic pleasure while drinking wine at the same time.
- He kidnaped Irisviel to get information about Kiritsugu, then strangled her to death.
- He wished for destruction when the grail appeared to him, resulting in the Great Fuyuki Fire, killing 500 people and depriving Shirou of his birth parents.
- He used the orphans from that fire as food for Gilgamesh so that he could sustain himself.
- He killed Bazzet to steal Lancer for himself.
- He is willing to unleash Angra Mainyu on to the world so that he can answer his questions despite knowing that he will most likely kill everyone on the planet including Kirei himself.
