“ | Most hunters, including you, are out to put the Gun Devil down. They're earnest. Honest. Straightforward. And that means the devils know how exactly to fuck with them. But there's no telling a crazy person's thinking. And even devils are afraid of what they don't understand. | „ |
~ Kishibe's belief on how to survive a Devil hunting career |
Kishibe is a supporting character in the 2018 dark fantasy manga series by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man, as well as of its 2022 anime adaptation by MAPPA. He is one of the greatest Devil Hunters working for the Public Safety organization of Japan, having formerly been a part of Tokyo Special Division 1 before becoming captain of Tokyo Special Division 4 after the assault by Akane Sawatari and Samurai Sword's forces. He is also Denji and Power's mentor and the leader of the Anti-Makima Squad, having been the first to deduce Makima's nefarious plans for the world.
He was voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in Japanese and Jason Douglas in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Proves himself to be one of the greatest Devil Hunters in Public Safety history, using an exterior of an alcoholic loon to disguise the true craftiness of his mind to remain unpredictable, making the devils fear him as an advantage to outsmart more powerful foes. A hilarious example of this is when Quanxi's harem dismisses him as nothign special due to him having no more parts to contract with devils, and then it is is then revealed through his craftiness, they lost very badly to him.
- Despite Power and Chainsaw Man being far more powerful opponents, Kishibe frequently ambushes and defeats them without breaking a sweat, using these to teach Power & Denji valuable lessons on how to deal with devils.
- When Denji and Power try to ambush him instead, while initially caught offguard, he still effortlessly dodges all the arrows and traps set up for him and then uses a surprise attack on Denji. Impressed by them taking in his training, he reduces their training to weekly before throwing a knife at Denji's head to teach him how "A beast should never trust what a hunter says", a lesson Denji uses to outsmart the brutish Katana Man even when he had no arms.
- Kishibe is the very first to decipher the fishiness around Makima's dealing with Sawatari's attack on the Special Divisions as well as her true goals of controlling all of humanity.
- Making a daring stand against Makima despite her being the most powerful devil on Earth around that time and that she can annihilate him with a thought, Kishibe rallies up a sizeable amount of people to join his Anti-Makima Squad, willing to play the wild card recruiting outright enemies like Quanxi to the mix through the use of writing boards to ensure Makima doesn't know about his scheming against her.
- Studying all the powers that make Makima invulnerable like her ability to transfer any attack to a random Japanese citizen, Kishibe launches a surprise attack on Makima while he bypasses her invulnerability unleashing the Hell Devil to imprison her. Considering how Makima is the tightest plotter in the entire series and is also a fellow Magnificent Baddie, his plan nearly succeeding is impressive, in which Makima only thwarts due to an unexpected advantage she had using the Chainsaw Devil.
- Upon his initial plan's failure, Kishibe instead finds Denji and helps inspire him into getting back on his feet, who uses Kishibe's training of being unpredictable and playing the wild card to defeat Makima for good. Impressed, Kishibe praises Denji for being the worthiest person he knows to be a Devil Hunter.
- Through Kishibe's craftiness, Kishibe is one of the only three main characters of Part 1 to survive the tragic events of the story.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Has a bit too much fun assaulting and temporarily killing Denji and Power as part his training for them, ruining their lives as he drives them to paranoia with constant attacks.
- Is knowingly risking many innocent lives as collateral damage in his noble goal of stopping Makima, having blown up a part of the building she was in and launching an attack despite knowing she will transfer any blow to a random Japanese citizen.
- And while Kishibe has a fail-safe, for that he consciously went for the means of human sacrifices where his men kill themselves to unleash the Hell Devil.
Trivia[]
- He and Makima are the only Chainsaw Man characters to count as Magnificent Baddies.
