I lost my son some years ago. He was killed. I almost did something on Purge Night that would've destroyed a lot of lives. I want this night gone. I know you do too. Especially after what you lost.
~ Leo, telling Roan about his motive for working with her.

Leo Barnes is the overall main protagonist of The Purge series. He is a former police sergeant that turned into a vengeful and ruthless anti-hero after his son was killed in a drunk driving accident by Warren Grass, who was acquitted of the charges on a legal technicality. Leo then decided to murder Warren during the next annual purge and almost succeeds in doing so, but after being convinced not to by the group of survivors he had been protecting, decides to spare Warren's life and becomes Charlie Roan's head of security a few years later in order to help her abolish the Purge.

He was portrayed by Frank Grillo.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

The Purge: Anarchy[]

  • He is an extremely competent one-man army and protector that can take on entire groups single handedly and defeat any opponent he comes across, regardless if it's in armed combat or unarmed combat, if they are military trained or just thugs and if he is under-equipped. He also spends the majority of Anarchy protecting a group of 4 survivors from all threats they come across, managing to deploy military level stealth, traversal and combat tactics even when he needs to keep an eye on them and ultimately, he manages to save 3 out of 4 of the survivors just by using his intelligence and competence with little to no help.
  • A whole week before Purge Night began, he disabled Warren Grasses (his son's accidental killer) back barricade of his house so that he would be able to break into his house on Purge Night and murder him in his house with this not being spotted by Warren or any other member of his family for the entire duration of the week.
  • He shows just how crazy prepared he is for Purge Night with him having a Kevlar vest, a small armory of guns and an armored vehicle that he had prepared in his garage, before setting off to go and kill Warren once Purge Night begins.
  • Despite trying to go against his conscience after seeing Cali and Eva be kidnapped by a group of NFFA members, he ultimately gives in and saves the two of them by killing the members and allowing them to escape with him in his vehicle, also saving 2 more survivors named Liz and Shane when they hid inside of it too.
  • He tries to ditch the survivors at first by giving them weapons so they can defend themselves and he can continue with his revenge mission, but after Eva tells him she will give him a car if he gets the group to her friend Tanya's apartment safely, he ultimately decides to protect them up until they reach it.
  • After noticing a group of Purgers around a corner and Liz attracts them to the groups position by screaming, Leo thinks fast and waits until the oncoming Purger is close enough and then grabs him around the corner, where he then snaps his neck after the other Purgers decide to ignore what happened and continue.
  • He successfully gets the group across a street using stealth tactics when they are sandwiched between a group of biker Purgers and a Purger that is murdering people from a bridge, where they then escape into a subway tunnel.
  • In the subway tunnel, he successfully defends Cali and Eva and gets them out of the tunnel when they are attacked by Purgers after Eva has a panic attack and is shot, subsequently tending to her wound once they are in a safe place.
  • After arriving at Tanya's apartment, he saves Liz from Roddy after Tanya's sister Lorraine murdered her and wanted to murder Roddy after learning the two had an affair and then holds Lorraine off long enough for everyone to escape.
  • He successfully remains hidden from Big Daddy and his soldiers after almost being spotted boosting the other survivors over a fence.
  • When the group are put into a "human hunting" game to be killed for the pleasure of rich Purgers, he keeps his calm and quickly turns the disadvantaged situation to his favor by prioritizing getting his pair of night-vision goggles so that he can see in the dark and kill the hunters. During which he:
    • Manages to stealthily get the drop on the first hunter by ambushing him around a corner and snap his neck after overpowering him.
    • Successfully loses the second hunter after he is ambushed and being shot at, subsequently ambushing him and stealing his MP-5, killing him with it and taking his night-vision goggles.
    • Single handedly defeats two of the hunters simultaneously in hand-to-hand combat while they have blades, knocking the first one out with a kick to the face and killing the second one with an MP-5, before scaring the spectators by shooting at them.
    • Gives Liz a spare pair of night-vision goggles and a handgun after returning to the group, where the two of them then kill the fifth hunter and the final two cowardly flee after realizing they are now at a disadvantage.
  • When Shane is shot by a Purger, he quickly kills the Purger before he can manage to get a shot off at anyone else despite the Purger being behind him.
  • He decides to give a Purger a taste of her own medicine by not deciding to kill her, but letting her live so that she can live in fear knowing what it is like to be hunted down before scaring her and her partner off so he can steal their car and drive to Warren's house.
  • Despite coming extremely close to killing Warren, he ultimately spares his life after seeing how remorseful Warren is and realizing purging is wrong no matter what and simply walks out of his house, which saves his life as Big Daddy attempts to kill Leo with a gun but Warren comes out and kills Big Daddy with a head shot. This act earned Leo the respect of Cali and Eva, who then have Warren drive him to a hospital after the night ends.

The Purge: Election Year[]

  • After hearing from Charlie Roan that she was going to opt staying at home on Purge Night so that she doesn't lose any voters by staying in a safe-house, he completely revamps all of the security in her house to include a complex locking system, barricades on all doors, multiple bodyguards inside and outside, 2 snipers positioned towards the house, a remote bomb trap and if all else failed, a secret trap door under the rug in Roan's office that could be used to escape.
  • When the traitors in the security detail set up a looping camera trick before killing all the bodyguards, Leo quickly sees through it and runs to Roan's office to protect her after realizing they have been betrayed, giving her a Kevlar vest and revealing the trapdoor to her after arming his remote bomb which the two then successfully escape through.
  • On his way out. he defeats 2 NFFA soldiers with only a small dagger by utilizing ambush tactics and expert knife skills.
  • When the duo are being shot at by a sniper from Roan's office, he takes a bullet for her and then detonates the bomb he armed previously, killing the sniper and a few other members inside the office.
  • He figures out a drone is homemade rather then government made just by looking at it from afar, which made him realize he could shoot it down with only a handgun.
  • He momentarily manages to fight off a small group of Purgers before he and Roan are overpowered by their sheer numbers.
  • He prepares to help Joe Dixon and Marcos Dali defend Joe's store from a group of Purgers before the timely arrival of their friend, Laney Rucker prevents that from being necessary.
  • He figures out that the NFFA have been tracking them with a tracer bullet he was shot at with, removing it from his muscle tissue with a pair of medical tongs and deciding to use it as a trap for the NFFA members by placing it at a dead end in the territory of Joe's loyalists, where the members are subsequently gunned down and the loyalists laugh triumphantly over Earl Danzinger's radio.
  • He manages to quickly avoid a swinging blade in an alleyway after accidentally setting it off, saving himself and Roan.
  • After Roan is kidnapped by the NFFA, he leads all of the heroes on a successful rescue mission that results in several NFFA members and Purgers being killed and Roan's life being saved.
  • When Dante believes he is going to die, he fulfills his final request of allowing him to sacrifice himself by holding off Danzinger and two of his men with gunfire, leading to Dante killing the two men but being subsequently gunned down by Danzinger.
  • After he and Earl run out of ammo in their guns, he takes him on in a knife fight, initially losing but managing to gain the upper hand after realizing he needed to be faster, not stronger by using his small dagger instead of the switchblade, to which he then effortlessly defeats Danzinger..
  • When the night finally ends, it is revealed that Roan is going to become the new president after winning against Edwidge Owens which leads to the abolishment of the Purge, saving America from anymore carnage and giving Leo and Roan herself closure from their bad experiences with the Purge thanks to Leo and the others efforts to make sure she stays alive.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He spends the majority of Anarchy wanting revenge against a man who is very remorseful for killing his son and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it, even if he has to ditch innocent civilians to be killed if they cant help him with his plan.
  • He is a completely willing Purger in Anarchy which is seen as a villainous action in the series no matter the reason.
  • He comes extremely close to killing Warren and even holds his wife at gunpoint, telling her to get on the floor before he nearly kills Warren with a knife while ranting at Warren that he will make him pay for what he did to him and his son.
  • He often employs brutal methods of murder against his enemies, such as snapping necks, slitting throats and slicing them.
