~ Garmadon successfully conquering Ninjago and defeating the heroes. |
Lord Garmadon is the main antagonist of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
He is the eldest son of the First Spinjitzu Master and the older brother of Master Wu forcibly corrupted by the venom of the Great Devourer, turning him into a power-hungry dark lord who had the ultimate goal of remaking Ninjago in his own image. Following his death, he would later be resurrected and become an even more ruthless and calculating force to be reckoned with, succeeding in conquering Ninjago. He would ultimately ally with the ninja to save all the realms from the Oni and fully redeem himself once and for all to help his son defeat the returned Overlord.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
Before Ninjago Events[]
- He has an extremely tragic backstory. He was once a kind, caring, and heroic person and protective older brother to Wu who after Wu’s sword was accidentally thrown over the monastery during their training together, decided to go retrieve the sword when Wu was too scared to do so. However, he ended up getting bitten by the Great Devourer snake in the process, imbuing him with its corruptive venom that couldn’t be cured by even his father, the legendary First Spinjitzu Master, with him resisting the venom as much as he could for countless years and fighting to defend Ninjago from numerous threats but ultimately turning evil later in life.
- He also genuinely loved his wife Misako and their son Lloyd, wanting Lloyd not to follow in his footsteps in becoming a villain.
- He is a very entertaining and hammy character. Even when after being reborn and becoming far more serious and cold, he still retains his theatrical nature and has some comedic moments in the form of sarcasm and comically serious moments.
Pilot Series[]
- After turning evil, he snuck into the monastery without Wu noticing and started stealing the golden weapons. When Wu confronted him, he snarkingly asked Wu what was the point of weapons if they were just collecting dust and when Wu refused to let the weapons leave, he engaged Wu in a duel and made sarcastic remarks while fighting him. He ultimately overpowered Wu and nearly succeeded in killing him, only failing because Wu’s kimono, which had a protection spell on it, struck him with lightning that disfigured and banished him into the Underworld, something he never could have expected.
- Despite literally just having been struck with lightning and falling several stories into the Underworld, he easily defeats the King of the Underworld, Samukai, when he confronts him and usurps his position as King of the Underworld, sparing Samukai’s life to be a useful tool in his plans.
- He sent Samukai and the skeleton army to successfully steal the map to the golden weapons and had them kidnap Nya, figuring she would be a useful asset.
- When Samukai informed him of his failure to get the Scythe of Quakes from the ninja and expected to be punished, Garmadon’s wasn’t angry or even concerned as it now confirmed that Sensei Wu was there and training four teens to become ninja, telling Samukai not to gather an army and ambush the ninja when he suggested it but instead let the ninja get all the four weapons and think they are winning as everything was going according to his plan.
- He projects a shadow form of himself disguised as Nya to trick Kai into coming to Fire Temple alone before revealing himself and the captive real Nya, lowering Nya into the lava to force Kai to get the Sword of Fire to free her. He then uses his shadows to fight Kai, which were completely transparent and impervious to harm but could still land blows themselves whilst being sarcastic and witty at the same time before easily defeating Kai with one simple punch to the head and getting the Sword of Fire. Even when Sensei Wu came just in time to get the Sword of Fire back and defeat his shadows, Garmadon revealed that by coming to save Kai, he had left the other three ninja and the golden weapons unprotected, having already had the skeleton army successfully steal the three golden weapons while the ninja were vulnerable which was his plan all along. He then awakened the dragon guardian of the Fire Temple to prevent Sensei Wu, Kai, and Nya from leaving with the Sword of Fire which forced Sensei Wu to sacrifice himself by banishing himself to the Underworld if Garmadon was going to bring the other three to the Fire Temple. However, after Wu did it, Garmadon simply stated that he would see Wu there and had the skeleton army bring the other three golden weapons to the Underworld.
- He ambushed Sensei Wu with skeleton forces when Wu confronted him and after Wu defeated them, he had Samukai attack Wu with the rest of the golden weapons and successfully defeat Wu to claim the Sword of Fire and have Samukai bring the golden weapons to him. However, when Samukai turned on him and demanded Garmadon obey him now, Garmadon simply laughed and revealed he expected Samukai’s betrayal all along and that it was the final step to his master plan as no one could withstand the power of holding all the golden weapons at once, but it would create a portal allowing Garmadon to escape from the Underworld, disintegrating Samukai in the process. Garmadon then successfully went through the portal victorious but not before revealing to the heroes that the portal would take him to a place where he could become powerful enough to wield the golden weapons so he could recreate Ninjago in his own image when he returned.
Season 1: Rise of Snakes[]
- When Sensei Wu arrived in the dark dimension using traveler’s tea, he greeted Wu in a faux polite tone and revealed that he expected his arrival, sarcastically asking him what took him so long. He revealed that he used the dimension’s dark magic to grow an extra pair of arms to make him powerful enough to wield the golden weapons and attacked Sensei Wu, very understandably believing Wu came to stop him. He defeated Wu and nearly killed with his summoned mud monsters but when Wu revealed at the last second he didn’t come to fight but to ask for help in saving Lloyd, Garmadon immediately saved Wu from the mud monsters and helped Wu up, telling Wu he could explain later as they first needed to return to Ninjago to save Lloyd together.
- He led Wu on the only route that could take them back to Ninjago and had a pleasant conversation with him, genuinely revealing to Wu that he never wanted Lloyd to be like him when Wu told him Lloyd re-opened the Serpentine tombs, accidentally causing the threat of Pythor planning to release the Great Devourer, to be like him and thanking Wu for looking out for Lloyd.
- He repeatedly saved Sensei Wu while they were traveling up the Mountain of Madness and defeated the Cragling monsters with him. Also when it seemed like he lied to Wu all along and betrayed him by pushing into the portal at the top of the mountain, in reality that was the portal that would take them back to Ninjago with Garmadon having just been acting theatrical and reappearing with Wu, having successfully returned to Ninjago.
- He has plenty of comedic moments when staying with the ninja as their guest, loudly brushing his teeth with a razor, eating low fat “condensed” evil, sunbathing during a thunderstorm, and others.
- When a paranoid Kai attacked him, thinking he was stealing the golden weapons, he put up a facade of a fight but allowed himself to be defeated, revealing he didn’t actually want to hurt Kai but was only fetching their weapons to give to them as Wu asked him to do. Later on, he thanked Kai for saving Lloyd and happily reunited with Lloyd, ending the feud with Kai on good terms.
- He was proud that his son was destined for greatness when Lloyd was revealed to be the chosen Green Ninja before remorsefully pointing out that this meant they were destined to fight each other in the ultimate battle between good and evil.
- He apologized and felt remorse after Lloyd caught him trying to steal files from the ninja, explaining to Lloyd how he couldn’t help it as he was literally made of evil but giving a heartfelt conversation to Lloyd that he had a choice not to become like him and he had to follow the path Wu set out for him even if it was to eventually stop him one day. He then tried to go answer the ninja’s distress call when they were captured by Pythor and the Serpentine but when Lloyd lashed out at him and told him to leave, he didn’t get angry and simply left if that was how Lloyd felt….only in reality to recruit the entire skeleton army and reappear to save Lloyd and the heroes just in time, having rallied the skeleton army despite having betrayed them long ago to defeat their common enemy, the Serpentine, saving the ninja and allowing them to get all four fangblades. He then sorrowfully departed as he was no longer needed after telling Lloyd how proud he was of him even if they were on opposite sides and that he would become a great man.
- He returned in the Season 1 finale to successfully convince the ninja to give him the golden weapons as it was the only way to stop the omnicidal Great Devourer and only he could possess all their power at once with Zane admitting it was the only way out of every other scenario he ran and having the ninja get the Great Devourer stuck in one place. He then epically summoned the power of the golden weapons and deliver the blow straight in the Great Devourer’s weak spot, instantly killing her and saving all of Ninjago before secretly escaping with the golden weapons only for the ninja to find out later when it was too late, having played the ninja and successfully achieve his goals and ending the season as a Karma Houdini.
Season 2: Legacy of Green Ninja[]
- He used his charisma to rally the Serpentine into following him and used the magic of the golden weapons to recreate the ninja’s old destroyed ship, the Destiny Bounty, into his new ship and base, the Black Bounty, wowing the Serpentine with his amazing sorcery. When Skales pointed out to the crowd how Garmadon had just been on the side of the ninja and that if they ruled with him, they would rule as brothers, Garmadon comedically stated rule with me…or else, pointing the golden weapons at them, rallying all the Serpentine to pledge loyalty to him and leaving on the Dark Bounty whilst abandoning Skales and the other three ex-Serpentine leaders to dry.
- He revealed his plan to defeat Lloyd not by killing him, even having a Serpentine thrown in the brig for suggesting it, but by killing Wu and the ninja so Lloyd would never reach his full potential, the prophecy would never be fulfilled, and he would win, traveling to the birthplace of the golden weapons, the Golden Peaks to successfully merge the golden weapons into one giant mega-weapon as the first step in his plan.
- He figured out that the mega-weapon had the power to create not destroy which is why his attempt to kill the ninja’s dragon didn’t work but Captain Soto and his pirate crew were revived when he inadvertently wished for it. He also realized that using the mega-weapon drained his power for nearly a day after one use and despite being imprisoned with the Serpentine when Soto took advantage of his weakened state and took control of the ship, he freed himself and the Serpentine by using the mega-weapon to reach for the keys and let the ninja and Nya defeat Soto and his crew before taking the Bounty when the ninja were celebrating and distracted to escape, vowing to the ninja to fight them another day.
- He kept in mind his lesson about the mega-weapon and used it to create evil clones of the ninja completely equal in power and skill and sent them to go kill the ninja. In fact, the evil ninja were so formidable and unbeatable that the ninja couldn’t defeat them until Lloyd rallied his former classmates to tip the scales in their favor and win the battle.
- After the ninja destroyed his mega-weapon, he simply changed course and created a new plan to find the fabled Dark Island that he remembered reading from Captain Soto’s journal awhile back, figuring that its dark powers would allow him to conquer Ninjago and remake it into his own image and even after getting betrayed by the Serpentine, manages to successfully find the Dark Island.
Season 8: Sons of Garmadon[]
- Upon being reborn, he single handedly broke into the police station and took down the entire police force, busting Harumi out and going to Kryptarium Prison to stage a prison break-in to free the rest of the Sons of Garmadon and take over the prison to stage a trap for Lloyd.
- He unlocked his true potential by facing Lloyd, demonstrating his impressive and formidable destructive powers and easily beating Lloyd before throwing through the prison out after chillingly stating he had no son when Lloyd stated he wouldn’t hurt his own son, causing Lloyd to lose his elemental power and the people of Ninjago to descend into panic, emerging victorious and heading out to conquer Ninjago.
- He demonstrated his power of creation by creating a giant stone colossus to force a village into submission and invading Ninjago City with the Sons of Garmadon and his colossus with the ninja and police being no match for him. He trapped the four original ninja and Wu in the hands of his colossus and crushed them (seemingly) to death and imprisoned most of the ninja’s allies, successfully conquering Ninjago at the end of Season 8.
Season 9: Hunted[]
- Upon learning of the Sons of Garmadon’s failure to capture Lloyd, he planned on causing mass destruction of the city to squeeze Lloyd and the rebels out for them to capture but listened to and took Harumi’s advice that that could make the people desperate and inspire revolt and instead sent out Mr. E to find Lloyd and the rebels as the more pragmatic option.
- He chillingly kills Mr. E onscreen for failing and orders the fearful Harumi to find his son or else he will do the same to her, making it clear he was the one in control and putting Harumi in her place (also starting to make her realize the true consequences of her actions).
- He deduces that Lloyd and the Resistance were planning on infiltrating his tower since the city was too quiet and has Harumi see to handling security of the tower. He also nearly sees through Lloyd and the other Elemental Master’s camouflage until Harumi inadvertently distracted him at the last second.
- He spares Harumi’s life after she reveals the location of the Resistance’s base and sends in the Sons of Garmadon to ambush the Resistance and capture the base, capturing nearly the entire Resistance and imprisoning them at Kryptarium Prison.
- He nearly crushes Lloyd and the final members of the Resistance but momentarily hesitates, showing that he still had some care for Lloyd and although P.I.X.A.L comes in to buy Lloyd, Nya, Skylor, and Darreth time to escape, he shoots down P.I.X.A.L and has her imprisoned.
- He reveals his true motives to Harumi of saving Ninjago from the omnicidal entities he saw in the Departed Realm and how he needed to become stronger through killing Lloyd and accepts Harumi as his new daughter to help him unlock his true potential, ordering her to find Lloyd so they can kill him together.
- He immediately became suspicious when "Harumi" brought a captive Skylor but neglected to mention she could absorb powers and after the real Harumi returned and exposed Mystake as impersonating her, he challenged Mystake to a duel in her true Oni form and handled himself pretty well against her. After cornering her (albeit Skylor escaped), he offered her the chance to surrender but when she refused and tried to attack him with her staff, he easily caught it and chillingly told her that was her last mistake before killing her.
- He was able to overpower Skylor despite her having gained his ability and regained complete control of the Colossus. He also mourned Harumi's death who died after the Colossus accidentally crashed into the apartment she was in when Skylor and him were fighting for control.
- He senses his brother and the ninja’s return and lures Wu and Lloyd into his tower before attacking and easily handling them both while demonstrating his awe-inspiring powers whilst simultaneously controlling his Colossus to battle the ninja elsewhere in the city. Even Wu admits to him that their father’s armor and sword can’t stop him and when the Firstbourne dragon blasts a wave of fire at him, consuming him, he simply emerges completely unscathed and blows the Firstbourne and Wu straight out of the battle with Lloyd barely hanging on to a rail on the edge. Despite having the opportunity to end it right then and there by killing Lloyd when he was powerless and being initially tempted to, he spares Lloyd’s life and throws him back up out of pragmatism since the fight is what fueled and increased his powers and eventually disarms Lloyd. He is only defeated by Lloyd refusing to fight him, depowering him, and the combined efforts of the entire resistance taking down his Colossus. Despite being depowered, he didn't break down and solemnly accepted his defeat, cryptically warning Lloyd that his power was the only thing holding the darkness back and now it would destroy everything and he didn't resist arrest.
Season 10: March of The Oni[]
- He accepted his time in prison and regained his theatrical charm, calling Lloyd to the prison to discuss his warning whilst initially pretending that he never sent for him before dramatically telling Lloyd about the threat the Bringers of Doom posed and how the ninja needed to release him to help stop them. When Lloyd initially refused and decided to leave, he simply smiled and stated he would be back. As he predicted of course, Lloyd and the ninja returned, realizing that they needed him and he was released from prison, joining the ninja to combat the Oni.
- He has a lot of entertaining moments when with the ninja, from his mere presence scaring them even if he was being mundane like clearing his throat, curiously looking around the ship and opening random doors and being puzzled by the concept of pictures celebrating "good times". He also argued with Lloyd about his suspicious smile after Lloyd told him he was going back to prison after this was over, claiming it was a happy smile and later on reluctantly admitting to the Omega that he wasn't usually Ninjago's protector but today he was.
- He deduced that the Oni entered through a portal between the First Realm and Ninjago via the Realm Crystal and informed the ninja, telling them they had to go back to the darkness engulfed Ninjago City so he, who being Oni could enter the darkness unharmed could destroy the Realm Crystal which should close the portal with a weapon he conveniently asked the ninja for. When Lloyd countered that he would go with him as he was part Oni too, Garmadon correctly pointed out that he was part Oni and mostly human which meant he only had some chance of surviving.
- When the ninja gave him a weapon, he attacked them and easily held them off and prepared to face them all for another round before…revealing that he only did that to get his powers back before jumping into the darkness engulfing Ninjago City with Lloyd close behind.
- He single handedly took down the two Oni guarding Borg Tower which housed the Realm Crystal, saving Lloyd from one whilst claiming he did so pragmatically because two fighters stood a better chance than one.
- When destroying the Realm Crystal failed to send the Oni back, he simply suggested retreating to Lloyd to form a new plan and used the Golden Armor, which they discovered could repel the Oni, to save Lloyd and led Lloyd out so they could be picked up by P.I.X.A.L. He was only cold towards Cole's seeming death and told the team to stop mourning and get going because every moment they stayed risked their chances of survival and they could defeat the Oni by repurposing the Golden Armor, genuinely trying to reason with the ninja and understand their point of view after they got angry at him and left.
- He has sympathetic insecurities, looking at the pictures of good times the ninja had to try and understand them, and has a Pet the Dog moment with Vinny of NGTV News when he stumbles in, asking Vinny what could possibly be more important than survival, and after Vinny tells him how friendship, love, and family are what make life important and without them, what was the point, Garmadon understood and agreed, thanking Vinny and allowing him to leave before going back and looking at the photo of his former heroic self and Lloyd.
- He gave the Golden Armor to Wu so it could be reforged into the golden weapons to fight the Oni and went outside of the monastery gates to combat the Oni with the ninja, Wu, and faith, using his power to single handedly take down dozens of Oni and engaging the leader Omega, putting up a very good fight against him and demonstrating his power to transform into his Oni form to even out the fight with the Omega pointing out how deep down Garmadon was filled with doubt and longed to understand humanity and be one of them once again.
- Despite initially being reluctant to join Lloyd’s plan in all the Spinjitzu Masters forming the Tornado of Creation to stop the Oni, after Lloyd pointed out he was as much a part of Ninjago’s history as them, seeing the ninja’s determination, and seeing Lloyd’s picture on the Monastery by covered up by the encroaching Oni, he had a change of heart and joins in, allowing the Tornado of Creation to be created and the Oni to be defeated, saving all the realms.
- He stands back to allow the ninja to reunite with Lloyd when he wakes up and heads out of the Monastery, looking back at Wu who smiles back, silently bidding farewell and leaving the heroes on good terms before departing for parts unknown.
Garmadon comic[]
- During his travels he defeat his old enemy Mogra and united the Forest Bears and villagers for peace.
Season 15: Crystalized[]
- He dedicated himself to learning to do good and officially befriended Vinny, hiding in plain sight at Vinny's apartment in Ninjago City for several seasons.
- He demonstrated a compassionate side in taking care of a plant he named Christofern.
- He was the only one to deduce that the Overlord would soon return and sent encoded messages to Master Wu in order to warn him. He also hid from the Ninja so well that despite they said they will know if Garmadon is back they will know but he surpised them by hiding under their nose the whole time.
- He singlehandedly took down a regiment of the Overlord's Vengestone warriors during the Overlord's invasion of Ninjago City.
- He figured out that the heroes derived their elemental powers from the dragon while the Oni had an equal and opposite called the Oni form, revealing this to the heroes.
- He mentored Lloyd and purposefully angered him in order to trick him into unlocking Oni powers.
- After the Overlord discovered the location of the ninja's secret hideout, he came up with a plan to ambush the Overlord from behind with Lloyd while his forces were distracted believing the hideout.
- He faked his death to allow Lloyd to finally unlock his Oni form. He even points out it would of successfully defeated The Overlord if Lloyd didn't get scared of his own reflection.
- After the Overlord's defeat, he would help the ninja rebuild the monastery, ending the series as a fully redeemed man.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He setup Samukai to wield the golden weapons and die to create a portal so he could escape from the Underworld.
- He stole the golden weapons to attempt to remake Ninjago into his own image and later succeeded in doing so to some parts with the help of the Overlord.
- He has attempted to kill Sensei Wu and the ninja multiple times.
- He conquered Ninjago, destroying several buildings via his Colossus while doing so and proceeded to rule over the land as a tyrant, locking up dissenters and taking over the airwaves, having the Sons of Garmadon enforce his fearful rule.
- He murdered Mr. E in cold-blood for failing to capture Lloyd and threatened to do the same to Harumi.
- He killed Mystake for defiantly refusing to surrender.
- He attempted to destroy Ninjago City to hunt down Lloyd and the remaining members of the Resistance.
