~ The Lord of Darkness' final words |
The Lord of Darkness, also known as the Dark Lord or simply Darkness, is the main antagonist of 1985 dark fantasy film Legend. Once the ruler of the world before light existed, the Lord of Darkness rules the Underworld while being a servant to his father. Upon sensing the return of the Unicorns, the Lord of Darkness sets out to destroy them so that he can rule the world once more.
He was portrayed by Tim Curry.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Is deliciously hammy, no thanks to Tim Curry's usual bombastic flair on his performance. The Lord of Darkness is always available with a sardonic wit to all setbacks.
- For all his evil, has an actual philosophical side towards the darker impulses over humanity, using this to his advantage when influencing man kind and giving a certain intrigue to the character.
- As the Devil himself, the Lord of Darkness uses dreams to influence mankind and manipulate them into becoming wicked and evil, using this to show he can reign supreme in the shadows.
- Upon sensing the arrival of the Unicorns, the Lord of Darkness uses his men to trap the Unicorns and kill the stallion.
- When one of his goblin minions plot a coup against him using the severed horn of the stallion, he immediately thwarts it and claims the Stallion's horn.
- Uses Lilli's innocence as bait to have his men trap the mare.
- Finding himself genuinely in love with Lilli for her moral purity, the Lord of Darkness plays many mind games with her to tempt her into becoming her Evil Queen, in which Lilli nearly falls for many of his tricks such as sitting on his seat or wearing his jewelry and black dress.
- Even when Lilli deceives him to free the mare and the heroes come to outnumber him, the Lord of Darkness overwhelms their defenses, sneering them off with how even wolves suffer from fleas, and was dangerously close to ruling the world.
- Even upon facing death, while initially calling his father for help, decides to go out with full dignity boasting about how the heroes haven't truly won and he can't be fully vanquished. The original American version of the film even ends with him laughing, showing that the Lord of Darkness managed to cheat death.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Is a corrupter who has influenced many humans into becoming evil. Many of such wicked humans ended up sacrificing people to him.
- Sends his men to kill the Unicorns, the bringers of light and warmth.
- Allows his minions to terrorize the lands.
- Ultimately seeks to force the world into eternal darkness and subject all that lives to a deadly winter
