This Magnificent Baddie was Headlined on April 2025.

The curse begun, but soon they'll see, the buried truth will end with me!
~ The Freak of Crystal Cove.
Two years after they left, Brad tried to return to Crystal Cove, by that time he and Judy had married and she'd given birth to a baby boy. I had to stop Brad, I took you in and told them you'd be safe, as long they never returned again.
~ Mayor Jones confessing the truth behind his adopted son.

Mayor Frederick Jones, Sr. is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Mr. E) of the cartoon series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. He is the adoptive father of Fred Jones, Jr.

He was voiced by Gary Cole and his Freak of Crystal Cove disguise was voiced by Frank Welker.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • Bribes Pericles for information to manipulate the original Mystery Incorporated gang for his own ends to acquire a piece of the disk.
  • Forges documents to implicate the gang's parents for various crimes to drive them off Crystal Cove and throw them off his tail, leaving no one to rival him on his search for the pieces of the Planispheric Disk.
  • Covers up his crimes by setting up Pericles to take the fall for their plan upon betraying him, leading to Pericles being stuck in jail for nearly 20 years as he deserved as the last loose end for Jones is now eliminated.
  • Under the guise of being a bumbling idiot of a Mayor running Crystal Cove, Jones uses this to throw suspicions off everyone while he uses the identity of being the Freak of Crystal Cove to continue his hunt for the treasure in secret using his position.
  • Upon Pericles' escape from prison, Jones frequently is in a battle of wits for a piece of the Planispheric Disk. Pericles was only able to bounce back from Jones' set up and claim the piece he possessed only after Jones was taken out of commission.
  • Has swiftly been eliminating loose ends to his guise as the Freak of Crystal Cove, the only thing that actually gave him away is when he scuttles his own escape just to save the life of his adoptive son from falling to his death.
  • Unlike most of the villains when outed, Jones was more somber and resigns to his arrest.
  • Jones is such an impressive mastermind, a genius like Professor Pericles frequently lost to him in a game of wits to claim the piece Jones now possesses, and was only able to get the piece only after Jones was taken out of commission by the new Mystery Inc.
  • Even when in prison, Jones gladly allied with the new Mystery Inc to outgambit the old gang who had all been corrupted by the curse by personally hiding the real pieces of the Disk so Fred can trick them into stealing fakes.
  • Unlike most of the recurring villains who succumbed to the curse, Jones was able to lay enough of a grip over his good side to love his son and reconcile with him, showing the Entity was never able fully control him. Compared to other recurring members like his rival Professor Pericles who become so warped by the curse he lets the Entity consume him in a futile plan for power, or Fred's original parents Brad & Judy Chiles who were so deeply corrupted by the curse they had gone from a rather happy and healthy couple to a bitter and argumentative one, Jones comes out looking as the best and the most dignified of the lot.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Blackmails the original Mystery Inc. into disappearing from Crystal Cove by threatening to frame their crimes for various crimes they don't commit, leading to nearly all but Cassidy falling down a dark path.
  • Kidnaps an infant Fred to threaten Brad & Judy from ever returning to Crystal Cove if they want to keep him safe.
  • Frequently attempts to exploit potentially dangerous monsters to make a quick buck out of using them as attractions.
