Our oppurtunity to revive Cybertron has been lost. Due to the treachery of Optimus Prime!! But with our new fortress of Kaon. We will seize control over this world. Decepticons!! Transform and rise up!!!
~ Megatron ordering he assault on the Autobot base
That's the spirit, but I was a champion of the Pits of Kaon, not only due to my savage might, but also my cunning! You should've heeded my advice and faced me as a beast!
~ Megatron defeating Predaking
Another craven Autobot scare tactic. The name was meant to demonize us, instead, we wear it as a badge of honor. For if speaking the truth is deception, then we are gladly guilty.
~ Megatron explains the meaning behind the Decepticon name.

Megatron is the main antagonist of the 2010 animated series, Transformers: Prime. Once a nameless gladiator named D-16 that befriended Orion Pax, Megatron had founded a revolution to abolish the caste system but eventually succumbed to greed. With Orion Pax becoming Optimus Prime, Megatron rallies up the Decepticons to a war that sees the Autobots at a disadvantage, frequently making daring plots to make Earth and Cybertron his domain.

He was voiced by Frank Welker.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • While Megatron is very heinous, his cruelty is more scale-based and doesn't dip into the revolting, personal cruelty to the extents that Airachnid, Starscream and Silas indulge in, the latter two getting glorious karma underneath Megatron's hand, and in general his heinousness mostly on grandiose schemes and/or inflicted on restorable robots that limit the horror of the carnage.
  • Has his own brand of sarcastic humor towards him. No matter the scenario, he will always have a witty remark ready.
  • Was one of the biggest gladiators of Kaon, having combined his ferocious might with cunning to have highly successful streaks.
  • Was a charismatic revolutionary that rallied up entire legions to be loyal to his cause, a notable member being his chief enforcer, Soundwave. His army grew further and further upon founding the Decepticons.
  • As the Decepticon commander, Megatron had multiple regions, such as Kaon and Tyger Pax, annexed as his domain.
    • While often a bad boss to most of his minions, Megatron treats Soundwave and Shockwave with respect and actually has a good friendship with the two, as he ordered Knock Out to fix Soundwave's visor and told Shockwave to stay in his lab due to almost loosing him once.
  • Has Insecticons placed on Kaon to fortify his capital against any and all intruding enemies.
  • Megatron loops around his zombie soldiers being mindless killing machines by inserting dark energon to himself to place them all under his control and render it a non-issue.
  • Lures Optimus and Ratchet to a great battlefield on Earth to resurrect the Transformer corpses there as soldiers that nearly takes both of them down as a distraction as he builds a Space Bridge to turn all of Cybertron's dead to be his soldiers.
  • Deduces Bumblebee had entered his mind with a cortical psychic patch and Optimus was infected with the Cybonic Plague, using it to force Bumblebee on a tight situation: either he allows Megatron to be repaired to slay Optimus himself or not get the cure and let Optimus rust to death. Even when Bumblebee manages to take a third option allowing Ratchet to take a snapshot of the formula's cure, Megatron simply hijacks Bumblebee's body to ensure his own rise from near-death before immediately putting his treacherous right-hand, Starscream, at his place.
  • Even when buried under rubble and held at Jack's mercy, Megatron goads Jack into killing him as he will have no other opportunity.
  • Curb-stomps Ratchet who was faster and stronger due to synthetic energon, and harvests the synthetic energon for him to use on his troops.
  • When Unicron rejects Megatron's servitude, Megatron uses brutal honesty to force the Autobots into an alliance and use them as his tools for his revenge against Unicron and take him down.
    • Megatron's determination is so strong, he outright resists the very god of evil for the Transformers race, Unicron's attempts to control him and show how he is controlled by nobody.
    • Taking advantage of Optimus' amnesiac state as Orion Pax, Megatron sows elaborate lies to turn him against the Autobots and that the Decepticon cause is righteous, manipulating him into decoding Project Iacon, a database filled with valuable Cybertronian knowledge. Megatron definitely knows Orion will eventually regain his memories and turn against him as Optimus Prime once more, and had been taking every precaution trying up all loose ends to delay it until he has Project Iacon decoded, and was so prepared he has Soundwave download all the decoded data to himself as backup if Orion decides to delete his findings.
  • When Airachnid tauntingly challenges him to a fight, Megatron ends up killing her Insecticon minion bare-handed, showing that she was doomed nonetheless.
    • When weakened and held at gunpoint by Optimus Prime, Megatron's tone when enquiring if he will offer mercy or finish the job seems to be one to goad his archenemy to finish the job, and stares at the blaster point-blank with a steely glare.
  • Upon noticing the Autobots' huge advantage by using the Star Saber, Megatron grafts Liege Maximo's arm to himself so that he can wield the Forge of Solus Prime and create one of his own to even the odds and even destroy the Star Saber.
  • On Season 2, using the Autobots' human allies as bargaining chips, Megatron regains the Omega Keys snatched by them for a tight Xanatos Gambit, either by cyberforming Earth and Cybertron to be his domain, or bait the Autobots into destroying the Autobots, using thsi as pretext to brand them as war criminals and to invade and conquer Earth, bringing the entire planet to its knees as he tracks down the Autobot's hidden base and destroy, has Soundwave check the surveillance system and so forcing the Autobots to disband and hide, Jasper conquered as their domain, and Optimus even succumbing to his wounds and dying.
  • When the Autobots attempt a rebellion, Megatron immediately quells it and nearly has them all executed, personally defeating their leader Ultra Magnus. He would've succeeded to had it not been for Optimus Prime unexpected revival and upgrade who ends up destroying Megatron's fortress on Earth.
  • Baits the Autobots into destroying the Predacon cloning facility to ensure they don't potentially rise up against the Decepticons.
  • Using reverse psychology and playing on the benefits of the Omega Lock's restoration, Megatron persuades Ratchet to help Shockwave complete the synthetic energon formula and rebuild the Omega Lock.
  • When Predaking finds out the Decepticon hand in his kind's extermination, Megatron actually advises Predaking to fight him as a beast, having baited him to be sucked out of the Nemesis using an airlock. During the fight, Megatron actually manages to hold against an enrage Predaking (which the Autobots including Optimus failed to do) but needed Starscream's help to throw him out of the airlock.
    • It is also implied that due to the Predaking's beast form was stated it couldn't fit in the Nemesis, Megatron would also have the environmental advantage.
  • Upon becoming Unicron's personal slave, Megatron shows great resistance and determination, even deceiving Unicron into getting himself attacked by Predaking in hopes of forcing Unicron to abandon Megatron's body with how battered it will be.
  • Upon being freed from Unicron's control, Megatron admits he has now lost his taste for inflicting oppression for others and dissolves the Decepticons before going on a self-imposed exile, knowing that for what he did, he will never be welcomed on Cybertron.
  • Megatron's charisma has earned him as the one true leader of the Decepticons, that even upon disbanding it, numerous loyal followers remained with many schemes to ensure Megatron's return as they know he is the only one worthy to lead the cause.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • Waged the devasting Great War that ends up seeing most of Cybertron's killed and the core of Cybertron corrupted and then eventually shut down, rendering it an uninhabitable wasteland. This war ends up spreading and destroying many planets for Megatron's mad ambitions to conquer the entire galaxy.
  • Created the Cybonic Plague that infected millions across Cybertron and corroding them to death.
  • Had Bumblebee tortured for information and nearly killed, resulting in his voice box destroyed and rendered unable to speak.
  • Using Dark Energon, Megatron intends to desecrate Transformer corpses on Earth and Cybertron to create an army of zombie soldiers to his control that will destroy all in their path, using them to conquer and devastate Earth and repeat this process to other planets so he can overrule the cosmos.
  • Has Raph, a 12 year old child, infected with Dark Energon and causes him to nearly die. Megatron's reaction to finding out about this is to give a very cold remark that infuriates Bumblebee. This is also the final straw that causes Optimus to deem Megatron irredeemable and that he had to die in order to stop his carnage.
  • Resurrects the omnicidal Unicron and become his herald to manipulate the prophecy of his rise to menace the cosmos for his own self-gain.
  • A bad boss that threatens his followers with having their voice boxes removed if they end up slipping to the amnesiac Orion the truth, and even tosses 2 of his Vehicon soldiers out of the Nemesis against their will to follow Smokescreen, with one having unfortunately having the alt-mode of a car and thus killed.
  • Shoots Dreadwing, one of his most loyal henchmen, down and explicitly tells Starscream not to make him regret the decision to kill him.
  • Has the kids allied with the Autobots held hostage, threatening to expose them to Cybertron's toxic fumes so he can force Optimus to give the Omega Keys.
  • Has multiple densely populated metropolises on Earth held at gunpoint by his fortress' cannons.
  • Attempted to have the Autobots executed when they make a rebellion.
  • Breeds a Predacon clone army to raze Earth and planets beyond to submission and then tricks the Autobots into wiping out the Predacon race to ensure his own control.
  • Has 2 attempts of using the Omega Lock against Earth and cyberform it, resulting in the annihilation of all its life in the process, with Ratchet even stating it may not be the end of Megatron's conquest.
  • Fatally shoots Bumblebee and smiles about it to Optimus before nearly killing him just to spite Optimus.

Trivia[]

  • When it comes to media that takes place in the "Aligned" continuity family, Megatron only counts in Prime as in the War for Cybertron games, while still a charismatic and intelligent leader, is far too cruel for the trope in which he would repeatedly do extremely evil and sadistic acts just out of petty spite for Optimus defying his control, notable examples being destroying entire shuttles filled with fleeing civilians and Autobots, raising up dozens of Autobots he slayed just to force Optimus to fight and kill them again for defense or forcing him to watch two helpless Autobots be shot in front of him.
