Meruem is the main antagonist of the Chimera Ant arc in Hunter x Hunter. He is the king of the Chimera ants who, alongside his Royal guards, plans to conquer the world, although that starts to change when he meets a blind girl name Komugi, who is the world's greatest Gungi player.
He is voiced by Koki Uchiyama in Japanese, who also voiced Tomura Shigaraki in My Hero Academia.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Is without a doubt the smartest character in the series, even having knowledge of Nen from birth.
- He is an incredibly quick learner as he was able to learn the rules of both Shogi and Go and best their national champions in just a few games.
- He was so skilled at Gungi that he pushed Komugi the best player in the world to get better at the game.
- He grew to greatly care and even love Komugi after spending time playing with her even asking for her name and wanting to protect her.
- He opted to talk with Netero instead of fight him even after being attacked by him twice. As he had changed his mind about humanity and when he planned on wiping out a good deal of humanity, he honestly intended to help those who were left. He only fought Netero due to him offering to tell him his name if he could defeat him.
- He defeated Netero, the strongest Nen user in the series by using what he had learned from playing Gungi from Komugi to figure out what combination of attacks Netero preferred and then use that opening to attack which resulted in his victory.
- Due to this fight he greatly respected Netero and acknowledged him as the pinnacle of his race.
- He did not lose his composure after Netero activated the Rose bomb and instead acknowledged that Netero had him in checkmate since the start of the fight.
- He did not kill Youpi for sparing the enemy because he told him the truth.
- He gave Youpi and Pouf a chance to keep their secret if they won his game even though they were lying to him, showing that he honorable.
- Even after finding out Pouf was hiding Komugi from him he still spared his life and Welfin as well because he helped him remember Komugi. Even when he rejected him as king abs declared Gyro his true ruler Meruem merely wished him luck on finding him and live as a human.
- After finding out that he was dying instead of continuing his conquest he conceded defeat and simply wanted to spend the time he had left with Komugi.
- He bowed before Palm humbly asking her to tell him where she hid Komugi.
- He admitted that he did not deserve the loyalty of his Royal guards.
- He warned Komugi about his condition and that if she stayed with him she would die as well (although she decided to stay with him anyway).
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He killed two Chimera Ants and cannibalized them.
- He brutally decapitates a family in front of that family's child, before killing the child as well.
- Before his redemption he was a tyrant who planned on wiping out pretty much all of humanity and conquering the world.
