~ Metro Man encouraging Megamind to redeem himself and save Metro City from Tighten. |
Metro Man is the overarching protagonist of the Megamind franchise.
He was once the protector of Metro City and the arch-nemesis of Megamind, however would ultimately decide to retire heroism after becoming bored of the cycle by faking his death, becoming "Music Man" and going into hiding in order to pursue his true passions of becoming a musician.
He was voiced by Brad Pitt, who also portrayed Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Despite being incredibly arrogant, he still manages to be incredibly entertaining thanks to Brad Pitt's performance, his exaggerated animation, and his banter with Megamind.
- He has incredibly impressive superpowers that he uses to his fullest potential against Megamind, making him an entertaining antagonist despite how little screentime he has.
- When he grew bored of being Metro City's hero, he used his super speed and used it for introspection, and upon realizing that he had the choice to move on with his life, proceeded to fake his death by pretending he has a weakness to copper and attaching his cape to a decoy skeleton before throwing it at Megamind when he had supposedly blown him up with his death ray. This plan wound up working flawlessly, tricking the entirety of Metro City as well as Megamind into thinking he was dead, managing to successfully retire from the hero job while no one even realized it.
- While it's true that he was eventually found out by Megamind and Roxanne, this was largely due to luck rather than his plan being flawed, and even then he still managed to successfully accomplish what he had set out to do regardless.
- While he refused to come back with Megamind and Roxanne in order to save Metro City from Tighten, he still encouraged Megamind to rise up against him himself, stating that if there was bad, then good would rise up against it. And while Megamind initially didn't take this advice, he ultimately would after Tighten threatened Roxanne, saving Metro City and becoming its new hero, with Metro Man being seen amongst the crowd, congratulating his old nemesis and saying that he knew he had it in him.
- While he arguably has some humiliating aspects to him, such as his terrible guitar skills and his lackluster disguise, none of them truly take away from the brilliance of his plan, not to mention his moments are rather tame by comparison of the other characters such as Megamind and Minion.
- Despite how selfish it was of him to leave the city the worshipped him for dead, he ultimately had an understandable motive, with him having fought against Megamind for years and never having a choice in the matter, making it understandable that he'd eventually want to retire.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- His move of faking his death in order to go into retirement required him to allow Megamind to win and take over Metro City, practically handing the place and its people over to Megamind and leaving them in deep emotional turmoil, including that of Roxanne Ritchi, who was shown to have been severely affected by his supposed death.
- When his actions indirectly lead to Tighten, a far more dangerous villain who put the lives of the city at risk, he still refused to help Megamind and Roxanne, instead placing all his faith on Megamind to clean up the mess he indirectly caused.
