NOTE: This page is only about the version of Mettaton from Undertale's True Pacifist Route, as his versions in the Neutral and Genocide Routes and in Deltarune were not voted Magnificent Baddies, thus info only about the True Pacifist Mettaton should be put here. |

~ Mettaton EX before his boss battle. |
Mettaton is a major antagonist in the 2015 indie video game, Undertale.
He is a ghost, as well as Napstablook's cousin and a good friend of Dr. Alphys. He was given a robotic body by the latter and, with it, became the biggest celebrity among the Monsters in the Underground, with a successful TV Show, movies, hotel, fast food chain, etc. When the human child, Frisk, falls into the Underground, Mettaton will initially help put up an act to make Alphys look like a hero to Frisk, but will later show his true agenda, as he plans to absorb Frisk's SOUL, cross the Barrier with it, and achieve true stardom by becoming a celebrity on the surface.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Thanks to his sheer charisma and confidence, he has become a nigh-universally beloved celebrity in the Underground with a very successful TV Show, as well as plenty of merchandise and movies. Some of his fans, such as Catty and Bratty, have outright crushes on him.
- Even Undyne, one of the few people who can't stand Mettaton, admits to admiring his extravagant lifestyle.
- Provides a lot of fun moments thanks to his theatrical hamminess and hilariously big ego.
- In spite of some rocky points in their relationships, he's a genuine friend to Alphys and his cousin Napstablook and, even if they're enemies, he never stops being polite and even amicable towards Frisk.
- If the computer that Papyrus used back in Snowdin for his randomly-generated puzzle was indeed Mettaton, then he trolled Papyrus by generating a puzzle that was completely easy for Frisk.
- Agrees to help Alphys by pretending to be a malfunctioning, human-eradicating machine so that Alphys can "rescue" Frisk from him and seem like a hero. During the charade, he comes up with multiple, incredibly creative methods to "kill" Frisk, all of which he broadcasts live:
- A quiz show, with death via electrocution as punishment for failure, in which the questions become increasingly difficult, sometimes ridiculously so, to the point where only Alphys’ help makes the quiz doable.
- A cooking show where one of the ingredients required is a human SOUL. When Alphys suggests using a vegan imitation soul, Mettaton has Frisk retrieve the ingredient from the shelf it's on, but the shelf becomes as tall as a skyscraper. He gives Frisk only one minute to get the ingredient before their soul is used instead, which Frisk is only able to do so when Alphys turns their cell phone into a jetpack.
- A news report where Mettaton asks Frisk to find a scoop by inspecting any object (one of which is a movie script Mettaton uses to shamelessly promote his upcoming film). All of the objects in the room, however, turn out to be bombs and Frisk is given only two minutes to defuse all of them.
- A musical in which Mettaton, dressed in a princess dress, sings a song on him and Frisk being star-crossed lovers and then drops Frisk on the floor below, where he forces them to undergo the randomly-generated puzzle in just thirty seconds. When Alphys "rescues" Frisk again, Mettaton challenges them to battle himself and, despite being invulnerable, pretends to be hurt by Frisk's SOUL bullets and leaves.
- Tired of the act and carrying the show for Alphys, Mettaton gets serious and sets out to kill Frisk for real, reactivating various traps and hiring many monster assassins (one of which might be Muffet) to do so.
- Finally confronts Frisk for real, revealing him and Alphys' act, shutting Alphys outside so she can't interfere, and revealing his true plans of using Frisk's SOUL to cross the Barrier and ascend to the surface to find stardom among the humans, all of it being broadcast as the final episode of his show.
- When Frisk flips his switch and turns him into Mettaton EX, he provides what many fan consider to be one of the best boss battles in the game, being very difficult, yet fun thanks to great variety of creative attacks and the interesting mechanic of the soul destroying/interacting with obstacles by shooting at them.
- When Frisk helps Mettaton's show reach 12,000+ ratings, Mettaton stops the battle to answer some fan calls. After hearing how sad all the monsters are now that Mettaton will leave them to perform on the surface, he realizes that, while humans have many celebrities, the Underground only has him. Thus, he ends his battle with Frisk, abandons his goals and decides to stay in the Underground to entertain the monsters and make them happy.
- Thanks to Frisk and a redeemed Asriel, the monsters are allowed to leave the Underground and Mettaton manages to achieve his dream and become a star among the humans.
- He starts performing with his cousin Napstablook and Shyren, allowing these shy, but talented musicians to become famous with him. He even gives Burgerpants, who he frequently mocked, a chance to be an actor.
- He is fully supportive of Alphys' relationship with Undyne, even urging them to get over their awkward tension and kiss.
- He provides some of the most beloved pieces of OST in the entire game, especially his two boss themes, "Metal Crusher" and "Death by Glamour".
- His EX design is also beloved for looking cool, flashy and even attractive.
- Despite being a horrible boss to Burgerpants, he's beloved by everyone else, and is implied to be messing with Burgerpants because he is a bad employee (such as stealing Glamburgers to impress Bratty and Catty).
- Despite his hotel being described as a labyrinth of bad ideas by Burgerpants, it's justified as Mettaton wanted to base it off the surface without actually knowing how the surface hotels are like.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Planned to kill Frisk and harvest their SOUL. He has by far the most egotistical and selfish goal out of every other monster in the game (except for Flowey of course), as Asgore and Undyne do it for the good of monsterkind, while Mettaton does it for his own, selfish desires.
- Although not an outright bad boss, he is pretty mean towards Burgerpants and, at his every mistake, Mettaton plays him songs on how terrible he is at his job.
- In the mentioned King Mettaton ending, he turns the Underground into a dictatorship with awful economy where he brainwashes his people (figuratively or literally, that's unknown) and makes everyone who doesn't worship him "disappear".
Trivia[]
- Only the Undertale Pacifist Route version of Mettaton counts as Magnificent Baddie, as all other versions from Undertale and Deltarune do not:
- In the "King Mettaton Ending" of the Neutral Route (the player doesn't kill Mettaton but kills Toriel and Undyne), Mettaton becomes too heinous and outright incompetent to qualify, as he still becomes a dictator who has brainwashed monsters using his TV show into worshipping him, ruined the economy, and was heavily implied to have killed all those who opposed his rule.
- In the Genocide Route, while Mettaton shows his true bravery and heroism when facing the genocidal Frisk, he has a downright pathetic "battle" where he goes down in one hit, becoming the fandom's biggest laughingstock. This is outright referenced in Deltarune, where Spamton claims NEO, the form Mettaton takes during his one-hit battle, is "known for its high defence".
- In Deltarune, Mettaton is a recluse who, so far, hasn't even come out of his house, let alone done anything magnificent or villainous, mainly due to still being a depressed ghost who didn't get a robot body.
- He is the only Undertale character to be a Magnificent Baddie.
- So far, he's also the only Undertale/Deltarune MB to come from the canon games.
- He is the current icon of the Deletion Template.
- His theme was re-used and reworked from the theme Toby Fox wrote for fellow MB Noisemaster.
