Mettaton is a major antagonist in Undertale the Musical, based on the hit 2015 indie game of the same name.
Much like his original counterpart, he was originally a ghost who possessed a robot created by Dr. Alphys, becoming the Underground's most popular celebrity. When Frisk fell into the Underground, Mettaton would help Alphys befriend them by acting as a malfunctioning robot who was out to kill. However, after growing sick of the whole game, Mettaton would betray Alphys and try to kill Frisk for real, wanting to become an entertainer on the Surface.
He was voiced by Alex Beckham.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He is still the charming, successful, and beloved entertainer in the Underground who loves his fans and will do anything to make them happy.
- He contains multiple fun moments thanks to his theatrical hamminess and ego, coming along with other comedic moments added for the musical.
- He helps Alphys befriend Frisk, acting as a malfunctioning robot who tries to "kill" Frisk, only for Alphys to come in and "save" them to act as a hero, and come up with several creative ways to kill them on live TV.
- While he does betray Alphys and tries to kill Frisk for real, like his original counterpart, he does make it clear that he partially did it because he didn't believe Frisk could beat Asgore, and that by taking their soul and going to the Surface, Mettaton could prevent Asgore from destroying humanity.
- He decides to spare Frisk and stay in the Underground, knowing he was the only celebrity the monsters had, wanting to keep them happy. Before he shuts down, he gives Frisk some encouraging words, telling them that he knew they could probably beat Asgore.
- His relationship with his cousin Naptstablook is further expanded in the musical and it is made clear he cares deeply for him, mentioning how he wants to go across the Surface with him to perform and make the humans see their glamorous talent.
- He's arguably not as bad in the Pacifist Musical as he was in the original game, as him hiring monsters to kill Frisk, treating his employees questionably, and his mass brainwashing in one of the many Neutral Run endings are completely adapted out or changed. Even his revealing Alphys's crushes on live TV is adapted out, as he more just scolds her for helping Frisk.
- In the Genocide Package, he does confront Chara at the end of the CORE to prevent them from continuing to massacre the Underground's population. Unlike his original counterpart who dies almost instantly after confronting Chara, Mettaton here actually manages to put up an actual fight against Chara before sacrificing himself, allowing more monsters to escape in time.
- Each of his songs are rather catchy and are some of the musical's most popular songs.
- Not only that, but each of Mettaton's songs are currently some of the most popular songs on the Man on the Internet channel in general, with "Death by Glamour" and "Power of NEO" having around 10 million views.
- Alex Beckham's performance as Mettaton captures the essence of the character's egotistical yet charismatic quite well, often being viewed as one of the best performances from the musical.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He does still betray Alphys and tries to kill Frisk in the Pacifist Musical so he could take their SOUL and cross the barrier, intending to become a celebrity on the Surface.
