“ | My name's Gabriel Moreau, but you should call me by my hunter name, Midnight. I hunt down any threats to the public, and believe me, I'm effective at my job. | „ |
~ Midnight introducing himself. |
Midnight is one of the two secondary antagonists of Monsters Among Humanity. He is an intelligent veteran vampire Hunter, who wants to protect humanity from vampires, as he used to believe that they are dangerous and evil. However, at the end, he realizes they are not all bad, and he redeems himself. He now works as a bounty hunter.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a very poetic, affable, charismatic and charming tone to him, speaking in a very calm way, adding to his charm.
- He has shown to be very deceptive and manipulative. Examples include:
- He disguised as a security guard at Charlotte’s concert, so he could continue spying on Cassie and gathering information, and manages to convince everyone he’s a security guard.
- He later pretends to be an excited fan to Zephixa, asking questions which seem to just be curiosity, but was in reality just getting more information on Cassie.
- While we don’t see how he got Zephixa’s publisher into an accident, he would have had to have to manipulated either him or others to accomplish it successfully.
- When Cassie is exposed, he goes onto the news and puts a bounty on her head, in an attempt to force the villagers in Zephixa’s village to hand Cassie in.
- After he shows horror at Derek’s plan to threaten to blow up part of the village, he ends up pretending to go along, but in reality, he wasn’t on his side, and called the cops, pretending to be an irrational terrorist and false-threatening to blow up the whole village, causing more police to arrive much faster.
- In the car chase, he yells into the public about Cassie being in the van, making cars try to chase after the van and even having some go in front of it to slow it down, which made it very difficult for Joshua to drive, proving he thinks on his feet.
- He is a well-intentioned anti-villain who wants to protect humanity, as due to past experiences, he only saw vampires as monsters, and didn’t want anyone else to be hurt by them, providing a sympathetic motive for his actions and beliefs.
- He is very sympathetic and tragic, as his village was attacked by a group of hostile vampires, where he lost his mother, and after he (and everyone who was a survivor) was evacuated from the village, his home village was blown up with a bomb to get rid of the vampires, which fueled his beliefs today, providing more sympathy for him, and making his motivations and past hatred of vampires understandable.
- He has clear standards and lines he won’t cross, as he was horrified at Derek trying to blow up part of his home village. He also shows a hesitation to harm child vampires, making sure that their deaths are quick and painless.
- He felt remorse for getting Zephixa’s publisher into an accident, stating that he didn’t want to do it and only did it as a last resort, showing that he isn’t willing to harm innocent humans, and when he does, it’s only for a last resort and out of reluctance.
- He redeems himself at the end of the story after he sees Cassie defuse a bomb, realizing not all vampires were bad, subverting his past hatred for them entirely, and also feeling remorse for killing so many of them. He then helps fight against Derek, and after the fight, he stood up for Zephixa, Cassie and Miyuki when the police threatened them, before he turned himself in for his crimes. He then became a bounty hunter after he talked to an officer at the station.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He murdered over 30 vampires over his career. While he thought he was doing the right thing, the vampires he killed were mostly, if not, all innocent. Some of these vampires were Cassie’s family, specifically her father, mother, older brother and younger sister (who was only 6 at the time).
- He stalked Cassie and her friends around constantly on suspicion that she was a vampire.
- He caused Zephixa’s publisher to get into a car accident, causing the publisher to fall into a coma, just to avoid her getting popularity, as that would’ve made spying on Cassie harder.
- When Cassie was exposed as a vampire, he immediately tried to kill her, and told the public she was dangerous.
- He chased Joshua’s van around in a car chase because Cassie was in it, speeding and breaking several traffic violations, and he even got other drivers to chase after him, which could’ve caused car accidents.
- At first, he was willing to work with Derek and Heather to kill their targets, and even admitted that he might have to kill Zephixa, as she was defending Cassie.
