Mr. Snake is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Diane Foxington) of The Bad Guys, Dreamworks' 2022 animated film adaptation of Aaron Blabey's book series of the same name.
A very cynical, devious serpent, Snake acts as the safecracker to the Bad Guys, a group of dastardly thieves forced into a life of crime by society's prejudice for scary animals. Snake's colleagues are the strategic leader and his best friend Mr. Wolf, the hacker Ms. Tarantula, the master of disguise Mr. Shark and the muscle Mr. Piranha.
Pessimistic and sardonic even in comparison to his friends, he is eventually convinced by Wolf to steal the famed Golden Dolphin so the Bad Guys will go down in criminal history. When the caper results in the gang's arrest, Snake will join Wolf's scheme of feigning redemption so to be freed, but the two friends will end up in conflict with one another as Wolf starts to truly turn good, to the ire of the cynical, card-carryingly villainous Snake.
He is voiced by Marc Maron.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He's given a delightfully devious and sarcastic performance by Marc Maron.
- He wears a nice-looking Hawaiian shirt and hat.
- With his serpentine anatomy, he provides a lot of fun visual gags all across the film, more so than any other character. Examples include him snapping his "fingers" and giving a "thumbs" up with his tail and managing to play the bass with his body.
- He is very sarcastic and witty, which leads to him having a lot of hilarious banter with the equally as snarky Mr. Wolf and Ms. Tarantula.
- He has a genuine tragedy behind his abrasive behavior, as he spent all his life feared and hated for being a snake and has even come to hate his birthdays because they are a yearly reminder that people born the way he is will always be seen as monsters, which he reveals in a very tear-jerking scene.
- As he's the oldest Bad Guy, he has had to endure society's prejudice the longest.
- Although very snarky and jerkish even towards them, he cares for all of his 4 friends, especially Wolf. This is shown from the very beginning as he smiles when looking at the pictures of them all together.
- He is a very skilled safecracker, managing to open any safe in a matter of minutes or less.
- Through his stealth and safecracking, he has helped the Bad Guys in stealing countless amounts of loot and always evading the police for years.
- He is initially reluctant to steal the Golden Dolphin and tries to talk Wolf out of it at first, as it's an endeavor that ended many criminal careers in the past, and is only convinced when seeing that the one who is to receive the award is philanthropist Professor Marmalade, who's a guinea pig (Snake's favorite food).
- He disguises himself as a wealthy man to infiltrate the ceremony with the rest of the gang and then climbs a statue to reach the vents, wherein he molts his skin to change into his spy outfit so he can act as a rope while Wolf goes for the Golden Dolphin.
- Him and the Bad Guys do manage to steal the Dolphin (although with no lack of difficulty) and are only caught when Wolf is too invested in Marmalade's speech on goodness.
- He joins in on Wolf's scheme to feign redemption so that they can be pardoned and steal anew.
- Although he fails miserably at all of Marmalade's training, including completely ruining the mission to free the guinea pigs at the Sunnyside Lab, it's not out of ineptitude but more out of Snake not caring at all about acting good.
- He overhears a conversation Wolf has with Marmalade about leaving his unrepentant friends behind and starts doubting Wolf's resolve to remain bad. His doubts would, later, be proven correct.
- At the gala, he uses the fingerprints Chief Misty Luggings left on her sunglasses to open up the finger scanner on the suitcase containing the password to the container of the Golden Dolphin. When he's almost caught, he pretends to be Luggins' glass (with his tongue being the toothpick) and then uses the fingerprints she has left on him to open the suitcase and access the password, which turns out to be 12345 to his annoyance.
- During the "Good Tonight" number, he reveals himself to be a skillful bassist.
- While distracting everyone with his bass-playing, he uses his tail to attach a sapper to a power source.
- Thanks to the Bad Guys' performance, the charity gala raises 1 billion dollars.
- After the gang is framed by Marmalade for the theft of the Love Meteorite and taken to prison, Snake makes a harsh, but correct point on how the outside will probably never trust them fully during his argument with Wolf.
- He shows himself to be a good fighter when taking on Wolf during their argument in prison.
- After falling out with Wolf over his redemption and going back to their hideout, the Bad Guys find out it's been emptied of all loot after Wolf revealed its coordinates to Diane Foxington and all that's left is a single Push Pop in the fridge (which was left by Wolf), Snake gives it to Shark to cheer him up as he cries over having no food left. This is the first generous action in all of Snake's life and it moves the others to the point of redemption.
- Although he initially rejects his "tingle" and redemption, it takes him seconds to finally embrace it and turn good as well, and sets off to stop Marmalade's plan of using the Love Meteorite to mind-control guinea pigs into stealing the charity money for him.
- Taking advantage of how irredeemably evil he looks, he feigns betraying the Bad Guys and joins Marmalade as a fake ally. Then he casually asks Marmalade to try on his mind-control helmet but uses it to control some guinea pigs into painting a lamp replica of the Meteorite so it resembles the real thing and then replaces the Meteorite with the lamp through those same guinea pigs.
- When, as he had predicted, the Bad Guys and Diane succeed in stealing the "Meteorite", Snake takes advantage of Marmalade's being distracted by the theft to put the real Meteorite back in its place and kick the contraption into overdrive, resulting in the Meteorite exploding with Marmalade's compound, foiling the guinea pig's plan for good and helping in framing him as a fraud. Snake even snaps his "fingers" the moment the Meteorite explodes just to drive home how well he planned it all.
- Is briefly unable to keep the traitor persona when the Bad Guys are really endangered by Marmalade's guinea pigs while trying to get him back, foreshadowing that he cares about them too much to have actually betrayed them.
- When Marmalade kicks him off the helicopter onto the crater below and the Bad Guys leap to catch him, Snake and Wolf have a heartfelt reconciliation midair, even declaring each other's affection and embracing, fully redeeming Snake from his earlier quarrels with Wolf.
- He is ready to die in the fall with his friends and even tears up despite his rough exterior anywhere else in the film, before Wolf reveals he still has a grappling hook and saves them all.
- When Diane almost reveals she was the Crimson Paw to defend the Bad Guys (which would have just ruined her political career) and Wolf turns himself in to prevent Diane from doing so, Snake and the rest of the gang follow in tow without hesitation.
- In prison, Snake and the Bad Guys are so well-behaved that they befriend the guards and, despite their countless heists, are released just a year later for good behavior.
- Snake happily proclaims that he'd wish for nothing if he met a genie because his friends and freedom are all he'd ever need.
- Him, the Bad Guys, Diane, and the cat ride off into the horizon, ready to start new lives as heroes.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- As the Bad Guys' safecracker, he and the rest of the gang have been stealing from banks and museums for years, reveling in the infamy they earned. Out of them, Snake manages to stand out as the most devious, overtly villainous, card-carrying, as well as the most abrasive and sardonic.
- He has a love for eating small, cute critters (especially guinea pigs). While a carnivore having to prey is fully justified, Snake admits that he eats them partly because he loves the feeling of killing something so innocent.
- According to his rap sheet, Snake has even attempted to eat humans in the past.
- Confused about what to do with a cat up a tree during Marmalade's training, Snake initially considers eating it and then suggests skinning it.
- Is the last member of the Bad Guys to embrace redemption and briefly tries to persuade Webs, Shark, and Piranha to reform as well. Either it's true or he was hiding it.
Trivia[]
- Only the film version of Mr. Snake counts as a Magnificent Baddie, as the book version of him was more of a petty thug and predator rather than an organized master thief like in the film.
- In spite of how close both of them are to Wolf, Snake and fellow MB Diane Foxington never interact with each other.
- If his rap sheet is correct, then Mr. Snake is the only MB in the film who is confirmed to have tried to kill humans.
- With 4 characters in it qualifying, The Bad Guys is currently the individual film with the highest number of Magnificent Baddies.
