~ Mr. White signalling Craig Mitchell to betray MI6. |
Mr. White is a recurring antagonist in the James Bond franchise. He is a high ranking member of the criminal organisation Quantum, and the overarching villain of the films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, as the main villains of both films ultimately answer to him. He later appears in Spectre, which would reveal that he is actually an agent of the far more powerful SPECTRE organisation.
What makes him magnificent?[]
- Unlike the other Quantum members, White is always calm and professional, and is far more intelligent than his co-conspirators.
- When Le Chiffre steals and loses $100 million, White effortlessly tracks him down and executes him for proving himself untrustworthy.
- He masterminds the betrayal of British Treasury agent Vesper Lynd, successfully blackmailing her into stealing the poker winnings that Le Chiffre had failed to win back.
- He spares James Bond's life despite having Bond at his mercy because it was part of the deal, showing that he is a man of his word.
- Despite Bond's interference with the plan, White is able to escape with the money, the first time in the history of the franchise that a villain's plan succeeded.
- He arranged for Craig Mitchell to infiltrate MI6 for eight years prior to the events of Quantum of Solace, even having Mitchell become the personal bodyguard of the agency's leader without suspicion.
- After being captured at the end of Casino Royale, White resists interrogation and easily escapes custody despite being wounded.
- When Bond disrupts Quantum's meeting at a performance of Tosca, White is the only one to remain calm instead of panicking and trying to flee, allowing him to avoid being seen despite Bond walking right past him.
- He has genuine moral standards and resigns from SPECTRE after discovering that they are involved in sex trafficking.
- Targeted for death by SPECTRE and suffering from thallium poisoning, White arranges for Bond to protect his daughter Madeleine from SPECTRE as his final act before committing suicide to avoid a painful death.
What makes him a baddie?[]
- As a SPECTRE agent, he takes part in many acts of murder and extortion.
- He murdered Lyutsifer Safin's parents and left Safin himself disfigured on orders from SPECTRE.
- He handles Quantum's business dealings with international terrorists like Steven Obanno.
- He blackmails Vesper Lynd into stealing Bond's poker winnings by threatening to kill her boyfriend Yusef, although he is actually bluffing and Yusef was a Quantum agent all along.
- When he escapes from custody, he tries to have Craig Mitchell shoot M.
- His attendance at Quantum's meeting at the opera implies that he was involved in Dominic Greene's plot to steal all of Bolivia's water.
Trivia[]
- Although Mr. White's real name is never revealed, a freeze-frame implies it to be Friedrich König.
